Abita Bourbon Street Coffee StoutAbita Bourbon Street Coffee Stout
Notes: This dark Coffee Stout is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate and roasted malts and oats. Willamette hops balance the malt sweetness. After fermentation and first aging, the beer is aged again in oak bourbon barrels. Espresso Dolce beans from PJ’s Coffee® are added to the beer for a blend of flavors including coffee, malt, wood and hints of vanilla.

L: pours clear brown but looks black in the glass. Looks thin
S: big sweet coffee, some chocolate, some oak. Missing the bourbon really. But it still smells good.
T: there is a nice coffee and light bourbon mix. I don't get any chocolate notes, just coffee and light bourbon
F: thin as the pour suggested, easy drinking with no alcohol present.
O: it's lacking deep rich flavors and too thin to be great. Although it's priced correctly.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter
Bottled 2016

A- bottle gushed upon opening. Pours dark brown in color with a two-finger head that quickly settles into a thin film floating on top

S- mocha espresso, ashtray, oaky bourbon barrel, vanilla, toffee, peppery tobacco

T- charred malt mixes with a nice herbal and earthy espresso note up front, followed by oak barrel, bourbon barrel juice, caramel & brown sugar. The finish gives notes of vanilla, espresso and bourbon barrel

M- medium-light body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that continues into the finish , abv hidden well

O- nice, easy drinking BA stout with a good barrel note

With a firm wallop of bourbon here and a kiss of coffee there, Abita's Bourbon Street series embarks upon the java bean for a robust culmination of cappuccino that rests upon a toasty, roasty base of burnt sweetness.

Espresso in color, its depths of darkness expel a dense but short creme-like froth. Mocha in stature, an aromatic array of dark-roast coffee, chocolate, light smoke and char, nutty and creamy saturate the sense of smell and allow its sweet taste to register on the early palate like marshmallow, coffee and cream.

As the stout warms, the savory taste of burnt caramel and toffee emerge, providing a tight and sweet cocoon for the taste of charred oak, milk chocolate, breakfast blend coffee, roasted chestnuts, and burnt toast that caldron from below. Its bourbon-infused finish shares the oak's sweet caramels and vanillans along with spicy booze, cherry and light licorice.

Full in texture, the beer has a relaxed creaminess that keeps the taste easily palatable. Certainly not contending with a thickness or cloying mouthfeel, the beer exits the palate with a long malty-sweet linger with the char of coffee grounds and the heat of good 'ole Kentucky bourbon.

On-tap 12/9/2016 at Doherty’s Ale House in Warwick, RI, served in a tapered pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strong black coffee, bourbon and roasted malts.

T: The taste likewise starts out with strong flavors of bourbon and black coffee. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is very mild as expected and there are background flavors of dark fruit and smoke that create a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. The aroma is largely roasted malts, dark chocolate, and espresso. The taste has a lot of sweetness up front and also a lingering sweetness hanging around well into the finish. The bourbon barrel notes open up more as the beer warms in the glass with oak and vanilla notes.

22oz bottle. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a good-sized, light brown head of foam. It smelled of rich, dark roast coffee with some oak and vanilla. Good coffee flavor with chocolate, oak and vanilla.

Pours opaque, dark brown in color, with 1/2 inch head. Taste starts off big coffee. As the beer warms, coffee is not as strong and more of a burnt caramel, sugar cane, and light vanilla emerge. Faint bourbon, but of all the Bourbon Street beers this is easily the least bourbon forward. I am liking the taste of this more and more as it warms. I prefer other Bourbon Street series beers more, but this is well worth seeking out.

BB 04/2017 so I'm thinking this one is about a month old. Served cold in a snifter

Appearance: typical dark brown with a tan and soapy head. Sank down to about nothing quickly. Poured pretty thin.

Nose: char, roasted coffee, slight Barrel character, nothing spectacular but definitely above average

Taste: follows the nose well. The coffee is pretty strong and a bit acrid, there is some Barrel character in the middle of the mouth and the finish is more of the burnt coffee thing.

Overall: I had the non-coffee BA version and it was wonderful. That acrid flavor just mucked things up. More Barrel would have helped this problem but it just wasn't there. The beer did get better after it warmed up a bit. The barrel character became more pronounced and the acrid coffee thing dropped off some. This is an above average beer but needs some more complex Barrel character to push it to elite status.

Draught pour @ Venetian Public House into a tulip glass. Black appearance with thin layer of white head. Nose was all coffee, missed the bourbon. Taste matched the nose, wanted more bourbon influence. Finish was a little dry, otherwise good mouthfeel. I'd drink it again, but not seek it out.

On cask at Burnheart's in Milwaukee on 4-23-2016, last day of beer week and during a DRAFT magazine photo shoot. The prettiest beer I have ever seen, pretty sure being on cask helped the cascade effect. I love coffee beers and this one is one of the better I have had, will be looking to re-visit this one asap.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, best before 4/22/2017. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big nutty medium roast coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big nutty medium roast coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light roasted bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of nutty coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roast bitterness and oak spiciness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a great barrel aged imperial coffee stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to sip on for the big ABV. Nice amounts of barrel presence without being overpowering or boozy. A very enjoyable offering.
