Our Ale is made with 40% malted barley (both pale and caramel), 25% wheat, 25% rye and 10% oats. The wheat will add full body and crispness to the beer. The rye will impart the taste and aroma of nuts and baking bread. The oats will enhance the flavor of all of the other ingredients to give the beer a well rounded flavor. The beer is dry hopped with Horizon hops to add a spicy hop flavor and aroma. The result is an amber colored, full flavored ale.

While at the Hotel Monteleone for a welding conference in July, the bartender offered me a pint of Abita 4 Grain. According to him, it had rye in it. Having never tried a rye beer, I was very excited. Let me preafce my disappointing scores with the fact that it was very cold in the glass. The last sip of each glass had the spiciness and grainyness I was looking for. The warmer it got, the more interesting it tasted.

Appearence - great
Smell - underwhelming, no grain aroma, little hop aroma, slightly more if you swirl the last sip
Taste - see above, watery and uninteresting, no ester or malt as the color would suggest, but not bad, very drinkable on a hot day, carbonation, spot on
Mouthfeel - watery, but easy drinking
Drinkability - high, there are no faults with it as a drinkable beer, only in style

This was served in a pint glass on-tap at the Abita Brew Pub. This is one of Abita's Select beers. The appearance is clear light copper with just a remnant of white head. Not much smell--some mild malts. The taste is grainy with malts & just a little spicy. There is some bitterness in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is clean, carbonation is just right. This is a refreshing beer and very drinkable.

I'm not sure if this is an ESB. It's close, but it has a hint of an APA. I'll ask the next time I'm at the Brew Pub.

This is their select beer that came out in April. I attempted to contact Abita to make sure of the style, but they never responded. I've tried it quite a few times, and I think it is a great example of an easy drinking ESB.

Served a nice orange amber with just a small haze to it, with a bubbly white head that drops.

Smell. Nice balance of the hops and malts, lots of caramel with a touch of a floral aroma to it.

Taste. Again, a good balance with lots of caramel flavors giving it a good sweetness to accompany the moderate level of hoppiness. Has a slight apricot fruitiness to it, but overall the sweet caramel flavor dominates. Aftertaste is crisp.

Mouthfeel. This has been inconsistant for me...i've had it where the beer tasted almost flat, and i've had it where it has adequate carbonation. When it feels right, the body is on the fuller side of medium and has a nice creaminess that coats my mouth, but stays refreshing and does not bog my mouth down.

Overall, I think it is a great example of an ESB. I had a redhook right after (not cuz i think that is a great esb, but cuz it is so available and the one i've had the most) and I thought it made the redhook taste weak. I had a Sierra Nevada ESB later on, and was wishing it was a 4 grain. Definetely worth a try if you see it.
