Style: Dubbel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Abbey Ale honors the ancient tradition of monks who perfected the art of brewing beer to support the monastery and their "liquid bread". We offer up our support and thank them with a 25¢ donation to St. Joseph's Abbey with every bottle sold of this heavenly brew. Dark amber in color, the aroma of caramel, fruits and cloves invites you to contemplate the creamy head of this "Dubbel" or double ale. Abita Abbey Ale is a malty brew, top-fermented and bottle aged to rapturous perfection.

Pours a dark Amber with a tall cream colored head.

Smells of wild yeast, raisin, and malt.

Taste is raisin up front with some plumb notes rounded out by roasted malt and nut. A lively carbonation keeps the flavors moving and reveals a nice complexity. A solid dubbel with depth.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, deep, dark mahogany color, with a quarter of a finger of white head that quickly dissolved into a lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic with lots of bready, toasted malt imparting notes of freshly baked French baguettes as well as aromas of Belgian yeast, which imparts aromas of spices, such as clove, cardamom, and black pepper. There are also notes of candied sugar and lots of dried fruit such as raisins, prunes apricots, and currents. Smells delicious!

Taste: Wow! That’s a delicious beer! Strong flavors of toasted malt, candied sugar and stone fruit up front, imparting bready, sweet fruit flavors, followed by lots of spices of clove, orange peel, black pepper and a touch of ginger. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and nicely effervescent as there’s some good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 8.0%, there is just a hint of alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is an excellent, spectacular beer! One of the best American-made Belgian Abbey/dubbel I’ve had, actually. Malty, fruity, earthy, sweet, funky, delicious! Highly recommended!

A: dark amber.
S: metallic. Grainy.
T: promising maltiness up front and then fades into overly bitter astringency.
M: crisp then flattened.

This brew was a bit off for my taste... I won't be picking this up again unless I learn I received a bad batch...
