Our Pilsner is similar to the Czech original, but all of the flavor characteristics are slightly intensified. The beer is slightly darker, maltier, and has more hop aroma. The water in Abita Springs is very similar to that in Pilsen and we do not artificially adjust it to achieve the authentic pilsner taste. Our Select is made with Pilsner, Munich, Cara Munich, and Cara Pils malts. In keeping with tradition, it is hopped and dry hopped exclusively with Czech Saaz hops. The resulting beer is a dark golden color with a sweet malty taste and floral hop aroma.

Had this at the brewpub. Pours a deep golden with just a hint of a white head. No lacing.

The smell is grassy hops, yeast, some light fruits. The taste has a spicy, hop bitterness with a just a hint of fruit & malts. Mouthfeel is crips, very carbonated but clean.

This is a fairly drinkable Czech Pils. Definitely better than a lot of Abita products, but not as good as I had hoped. The hop bitterness & biting carbonation were not what I expected.

Served a nice rich dark golden straw with a small white head. The color to this beer makes it look quite appitizing to me.

Smell. A little bit muted and a bit uneventful. There is some mild saaz hop characteristics that is a little herb-like and just a tiny hint of a spiceness. Pilsners, to me, aren't known for their aroma compared to others, and i think this aroma falls under average for the style. Just wish there was a little more of the hops coming though.

Taste. This pilsner has a clean flavor, but is rather neutral. When the beer was just served and the ice from my frozen mug was still stuck on the sides, i got a spicey fruit flavor that i did not particularly like, specifically a cinnoman cherry flavor. I can see the cinnoman from the hops, but did not care for the cherry fruitiness that considered an off flavor. Fortunately the cherry flavor i got left as the beer warmed. The malt profile is a bit more prominent than the hops, but still leaves the beer having a clean flavor. The aftertaste leaves my tongue feeling a little bit of a spiceness from the saaz.

Mouthfeel. Body is balanced with a moderate level of malts and hop flavors, but i wish the it was a little crisper. Body is on the light side of medium, but fills out enough so that it is not empty..

Overall, not bad but nothing like the 20th anniversary pilsner. I had this in July and remember liking it a bit more than when i had it this weekend. I had five of them in two days but from the same keg. I hope to try it again somewhere else and hopefully the flavor will go back to what i first thought of this one.

I opened the night at Abita with their new select on tap. The beer was a orange tinted gold color with a small head. The smell was on the weaker side--light hops and malts. The taste was pretty similar and left with an unpleasant dry bitter aftertaste. The mouthfeel was standard for an Abita--high on carbonation, and thin. I can drink the beer, but I won't be ordering this beer again. I was hoping for the high quality of the 20th anniversary pilsner, but I don't think it's there.

The newest select, on tap at the brew pub. Pours a clear dark gold--bordering on amber, strangely--with a small foam cap that disappears rather quickly. Smells faintly of clean, sweet pilsner malt with a weak nod to aromatic hops. Some caramel malt notes as well. Pretty underwhelming. Tastes of the standard pilsner malt again, sadly without any of the grainy characteristics that can make this style so nice. Some ever-so-slight grassiness from the hops, though they don't add any significant bitterness. Honestly it tastes like a version of Amber with an altered malt bill. Very bleh. Medium-bodied with a decent amount of carbonation. This isn't really an offensive beer, it's just so lackluster and characterless that one doesn't have the desire to drink any more. It's a shame, as the 20th Anniv Pils was decent.

**Edit--had this again a few months later and it was noticeably better. Much stronger hop character that gave it some pot-like character on the nose and a more bitter, refreshing taste. I'm wondering if there were two batches of this; the difference was that great. Bumping the score way up from a 2.85.
