Style: Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Double Kolsch is brewed with pilsner and wheat malts giving it a deep golden color and sweet malt flavor. It is hopped exclusively with German Perle hops which gives it a pleasant hop flavor and aroma. Since it is a "double" all of the ingredients are increased making it much stronger than is typical of the style. It is fermented with a special yeast from Germany giving it a slightly fruity aroma. The result is strong golden ale that is perfect for the summer months.

Got to try this one last night at the Brewers Reception before the Durham World Beer Festival served in a plastic cup a crisp orange with a nice frothy off white head. Aroma was a bit of sweet malts and just a slight bit of grassy hops. The taste was an interesting blend of caramel malts and citrus hops. The beer was on the heavy side of medium with decent carbonation. An interesting beer to say the least.

Had at the brewery. From notes.

Dark straw color, with a big fluffy off white head.

Smell was a tad grainy, sweet, with heavy malt untertones, and slightly noticeable alcohol smell.

A bit of alcohol at first, followed by heavy grainy malts, hints of sweetness, almost caramel. Slight hop bitterness in the end.

Medium bodied, and a tad sticky.

Unsure of the ABV, but it's definitely higher than a standard Kolsch. 1 does well.

I know, a Kolsch has strict guidelines, but for what it is, it is still pretty tasty.

Pours an orange amber color with a nice sized off-white head that has decent retention and leaves a small amount of lacing.

Aroma is lacking, nothing off but nothing much to be found at all really. A little sweet and bready but overall very unpronounced.

Taste again is bready and sweet. Starts off somewhat grainy. A slight touch of wheat shows up towards the end along with a little spice and the alcohol becomes evident into the finish.

Medium body, medium carbonation.

Decent to try overall but not something I'd want to have again. The past few Selects have been much better so this one was a bit of a disappointment for me.
