Brewed by:
Abita Brewing Co.
Louisiana, United States

Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Barleywine is made with generous amounts of pale, red, and caramel malts. These malts give it a deep brown color and intense malt character and flavor. It is hopped in the brewhouse with Apollo, Cascade and Amarillo hops. It is then dry hopped in the aging tank with Cascades. In all we used about 3 lbs of hops per barrel. This blends wonderfully with the flavors from the malt to give the beer a very balanced profile. The result is a brownish colored beer that is very robust, malty, hoppy and flavorful.

Poured at the Barley Oak, Mandeville, LA. My wife decided to try one and it was so good, I had to get my own.

Appearance: Ice-tea brown with a yellowish, 2 finger head that hung around for the view. Great lacing.

Smell: I'm getting subtle jabs of citrus and chocolate; nothing overpowering.

Taste: A complex, malty brew that settles in for the afternoon. Caramel sweetness tinged with slight grassy hops that bring in a bit of bitterness. Alcohol creeps in for a strong finish. Smooth. Very different from the standard Abita taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to thick. Chewy. Not much carbonation, though.

Overall: this was a nice surprise from Abita. A strong, decent barleywine.

Pours a medium garnet/rust color, not totally see through, unlike most Abita beer. Head was a yellowish cream color, small. The aroma wasn't very pronounced, but primarily caramel malt sweetness with a touch of grassiness. The taste was sweet, with caramel malts, sticky sweetness, some noticeable alcohol heat and a bitter finish. Mouthfeel was kinda middle of the road. It had a slick creaminess to it, but it leaned more towards medium body with elevated carbonation rather than being rich and robust. Not bad though, and overall, while nothing spectacular, a solid deviation from their regular line up. Nice to see an Abita beer almost break the 10% mark!

A: The beer is slightly hazy copper-amber in color. It poured with a thin beige head and left lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of burnt malts and caramel in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of caramel and toffee along with hints of burnt malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. No warming from the alcohol is noticeable.
O: This beer is a fair representation of the style; the burnt malt aromas and flavors adds a little uniqueness.

Pours a red tinted brown, somewhat cloudy, little head. Scent leads with caramel note and a solid piney and grassy hop presence, light splash of orange and whiff of whiskey. Taste is somewhat one dimensional as it is not nearly as malty or as hoppy as i prefer in the style. Medium bodied, light on carbonation, very thin for the style. Just not what i look for in a barleywine.

Served on tap at Mugs Alehouse in Brooklyn, NY

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden orange in color with some light visible carbonation. the beer has a finger tall beige head which reduces to a layer covering the entire surface of the beer with a very thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: Not as sweet smelling as a lot of other barleywines but still very malty. There are hints of caramel as well as toffee but the beer has a very light aroma overall.

T: Caramel and toffee malt sweetness along with some slightly burnt malts as well .The flavor really does follow the aroma.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Good, one of the better Abita beers that I have had (though recently they have been coming out with some better and more interesting offerings). Definitely one to get another time.

On tap at the Abita brewpub. Served in a pint glass.
The beer was a deep amber-brown color with a decent khaki colored head. Good lacing as the pint was consumed.
The aroma was a bit muted, piney notes and a touch of citrus, intermingled with caramel and malt. Nothing aggressive or too outstanding.
The beer was tasty but not overly impressive. Malty, a touch on the sweet side, notes of caramel and toffee. Balancing piney resin from the hops. Rich and warming and on the strong side.
A decent offering from Abita. I'd drink it again.
