Orange with very short fast white head. Big assertive acidic apricot and stone fruit nose.

Mouth feel is great fruit assertive sour with medium carb and wonderful balance.

Flavors completely follow nose with tart tones and sweet and sour side notes. Some spice herbs

Today is 10-18-15: On tap at the new (to me) location. Served in their classic tulip. Get ready to pucker. Such a surprise and oh so sour/good! Based on BA reviews, this should not show up as retired. Get to the brewery right now.

Just had this beer at the tap room.
Really good beer. really strong sour. war heads as a child prepared me for this.
The unique citrus used really gives it a powerful sour kick with minimal sweet. real strong flavor pretty damn good sour.

Avery Eremita VIII

On-draught @ Avery's taproom on 11/09/15:

APPEARANCE: Head is pathetic, receding fully within 25 seconds, leaving no lacing.

Body is a golden-copper of average vibrance. I see no yeast within.

Looks nice for a sour ale, but it's not unique or special.

AROMA: Peach, apricot, acidic fruit skin, blonde malts, unifying oak barrel, Lactobacillus sourness, assorted bacterial intangibles. Sourness seems like a mellow 3/10 in terms of intensity. Aromatic intensity is above average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: I underestimated the sourness intensity...it's easily 5-6/10, bringing a smacky Lactobacillus bacterial character to the fore. The lactic acid sets off the acidic fruit skin nicely, playing into the orchard fruit notes of peach and apricot. While nice, the fruit notes could be better: juicier, more vivid, more expressive.

It's balanced, but there isn't much intricacy here to make balance all that difficult. It's a pretty straightforward sour ale build, if not a plain one. I like it, but it lacks the complexity and nuance of Superior examples of the style. I do like the tartness.

Texture is acidic and smacky. Smooth, wet, light-bodied, refreshing. Complements the taste nicely. Well carbonated.

OVERALL: Drinkable and enjoyable, but Avery makes better sours. Not worth its egregious $12/10 oz price, but I'm glad I tried it once and would recommend it to any discerning sour drinker.

Poured into a tulip at Avery's tap room.

Appearance: honey orange in color. Hazy - so hazy you can't see through it. Only light penetrates. Head fades very quickly, leaving only a lacing in the first minute and then nothing. The beer appears flat.

Aroma: sour with slight funk. No typical Brett - no leather, wood etc.

Flavor: sharp acidity. Bring your Tums if you plan on having more than 1. Fruit flavors are detectable but you can't tell what fruit specifically. No oak flavors and only minimal funk.

Mouthfeel: just right for style: not too heavy but far from thin.

Overall: this beer was good but not great. Your time and money will be better spent on Avery's raspberry sour. Avery has better sours, and better sours from other brewers are readily available.

Apricot jam in the taste for me. Strong acidity and sour notes but the fruit compliments it so well. A bit of funk and the oak really comes through in this beer. Not for the faint of heart, but this is a winner.
