Is it ale or is it wine- each take the strong influence of the other and skillfully arrange them into a sensual medley of taste. Avery's barrel program hits high stride with Spontanae!

Tawny, crimson and rusty- its hues are dense as its high acidity thwarts any lingering foam as the ale falls still, pretending to be the seductive Cabernet Sauvignon robust red wine. But the tart fruitiness of such wine is no match for the dominantly acidic nose. Fruit, balsamic and spice are all enough to make your face stick that way, just from the scent alone.

Its dry, juicy and fruity taste hits the tastebuds with force- pin-point precision sours the palate with red wine vinegar, crabapple, sour red grape, blackberry, plum and lime. Its fruit character is of both the under-ripened variety and the dried, leathery character. Weathered oak gives a peppery and tannic bite to heighten the awareness of the massive acids burrowed deep within the taste.

Both powdery and juicy, the ale magically weaves together a sublime dry and drinkable sensation to the medium-light ale and also seducing the senses with natural fruit juices even in finish. With echoes of Cabernet Sauvignon and peppery oak swirling about.

Cabernet wine bomb. All nose and taste of sweet tannic cabernet grapes. Barrel character is prevalent. If you like cabernet wine then this is a must try

Appearance: Pours out an interesting tawny color, almost the tone of a long-aged Cabernet; the head has an auburn hue and fades quickly to a ringlet; some spotty lacing hangs around

Smell: Dominant oak and Cabernet tones, with tart berry fruit and caramel elements underneath; there is a depth to the sweeter tones that complements the tart ones in a very unusual way

Taste: Both lactic and acetic sourness dominate the front end, with Cabernet grape, plum, oak, caramel and Candi sugar elements building; lime-like tartness builds through the middle and into the finish but the most interesting aspect is the undertone of Candi sugar that becomes more noticeable in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; puckery

Overall: Each of these Avery barrel-aged beers is so different from one another that the collection becomes exhibit #1 as to why sour beers are among the most interesting beers being brewed right now

Thanks, 3bthero, for the opportunity
