Style: American Brett

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
100% Brettanomyces drie Fermented Dry-Hopped Wild Ale.

While touring Belgium with the greatest of friends in 2006, the Avery family came across a stunning creation in a quaint countryside pub that we all agreed was the best brew of the trip. Secreting home a couple of bottles, they intended to cultivate the wild yeast that spontaneously worked its magic in Beersel and propagate our own projects here in Boulder.

Late checkin.!Rated fresh. Was explosively tropical on the nose, lightly tart, refreshing and flavorful. That Brett / Sacc Trois strain was so unique and tasty I cultured it for future homebrewing use. Brewing this week with it reminded me I never checked in the OG bottle. No ideahow it's drinking lately, but was great in its prime.

Bottle.

A: Moderately light tropical fruit, light malt sweetness, followed with light hoppy notes.

A: Light copper color, clear, with a thick uniform white head with decent retention and light lacing in the glass.

T: Moderate tropical fruit, moderate malt sweetness, followed by light citrus hops, light tartness and dry finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Solid; the beer has a solid tropical fruit aroma and flavor from the brett, but the beer could be even better, if the dry-hopping was more pronounced.

22oz bottle: Found this hiding in the back of the fridge. It pours a clear, lighter golden color. There was a minimal white head that doesn’t linger or leave any lacing. The nose is a little lighter, with some Brett , apples and tropical fruits. The taste is very good. Just a bit of the sourness to it. Some yeast, earthiness, apples, other fruits, some grain. Very Nice!

Served in a signature Avery snifter glass.

Appearance: Heavy bubbles on a deep darker gold body. Head is straight white maybe three quarters of an inch off the body. Drops to nada after two sips.

Smell: Yeast scent, smells like a touch of nutmeg and bread. Pretty appetizing.

Taste: Little kick, like nutmeg and light pepper. Sweet hops makes the brew feels like the thirst quencher.

Mouth: medium to heavy carbonation, stickiness is average. Raisin bread finish.

Overall: I like the brew, super appetizing. More like a liquid raisin pound cake. No complaints on my end. Salud!

22 oz bomber to tulip

Classic copper-tan appearance with little head and scant lacing. Floral nose, slightly tart with notes of dried pit fruit, oak and a dash of funk. More fruit forward on the palate, the pit fruit bends toward a berry-like tone. Dry, slightly oaky and grassy, the sip closes quickly thanks to a strangely thin, watery mouthfeel.

It's absurdly hot right now in San Diego, so a light, slightly fruity, slightly sour wild ale doesn't sound that bad in concept, and I wouldn't call this a bad beer. But it's boring, flat in flavors and not nearly as memorable as many of the brews Avery offers up for their anniversary.

Pours a sunset copper with just a moderate thin head & a persistent champagne carbonation. Aroma has a delicate loam presence from the Brett, and carries notes of lemon, apple mash & stonefruit pit. Subtle & inviting. The taste is not quite as robust, but is still well done. It mainly carries the apple mash (with pear as well) & a dash of dried apricot, with the body of the profile featuring chalky yeast & a pronounced malt grain, which does weigh the beer down somewhat & pulls away from the lighter, bouncier flavors. Also some malty phenols in there. The Brett doesn't have much presence either. Mouthfeel is good with a dancing carbonation, though it is very chalky as aforementioned; that just doesn't bother me.

Shimmering amber with a large head that slowly fades to a film.

Dry hopped aromas bring green apple, floral and herbal notes and some citric background. Twenty Two is so aromatic I could smell it from quite a distance, outdoors!

Flavors are drastically toned down from the aromas to the point I'm wondering what happened. It's really confounding. Taste is lightly acetic, grassy, floral hops, with a metallic bitterness.

From a 650 ml bottle (bottled June 2015) into a tulip glass. Reviewed from notes dated May 9, 2015.

A-The beer is an orange-tinted hay color. Pretty light but quite murky. The head is white and starts out at two fingers tall before fading slowly to a film. The foam leaves chunks of lace on the glass.

S-The aroma is full of brett notes and dry-hopped tropical fruitiness. I sniff some peach, pineapple, white grape, and orange. There is a good hard pull on my glands from the sourness, but the beer is not overly acidic or puckering. A touch of medicinal bitterness creeps in as the beer warms.

T-The taste is less interesting than the smell, but not bad at all. On the palate, the beer provides more grain taste and a dry, earthy, bretty character. I taste some grapefruit, a bit of white grape tartness, and very vague tropical notes. A light bitterness builds with each sip and the finish is pretty dusty.

M-The body is medium in heft with a softer carbonation than normal for the style.

O-I enjoyed this beer, and in particular, I liked the smell quite a bit. It lacks that huge acidity than so many of Avery's beers seem to possess, but I think that is a good thing here. Nevertheless, the beer lacks the complexity of the best examples of the style.

A: This poured a clear gold with moderate white head.
S: It smelled like funky oak and earthy minerals, with a little tart white grapes and unripe apricots.
T: It tasted like earthy minerals and herbal hops, with some funky oak and white grapes. It had a clean tart aftertaste.
M: It was watery with smooth natural carbonation. Nice slick body.
D: This was a decent wild ale that was refined, delicate, and complex. But the scent and taste weren't as bold or delicious as many others. It had a solid body and relatively smooth finish, so it was easy to drink. Probably not for aging. Nice to try once, but not again.
