Color is close to black with a whispy tan head. A collection of dry roasty malts and some sweet fruit tones. Taste also has a nice dry malt component followed by some richer choclates and coffee. Very faint hop presence does its job. A crisp medium body begs this to be enjoyed with a big greasy burger. A good drinkable stout.

Fairly decent beer/stout. Nice and bitter with a good amount of roast to it.

Very dark with a tan head.

I would buy this again as I think it's easily something I could drink over and over, though stouts are my favorite style.

Mouthfeel isn't overly thick which helps a bit with having more than one.

Overall a good stout IMO and one I'll continue to purchase.

Bottled September 30, 2011.

Beer is black with two fingers worth of tan head. Good retention and a bunch of sticky lacing.

Smell contains chocolate, creamy scents, coffee, and grassy hops. Pretty nice.

Taste has lots of roasted malt, a creamy flavour, some chocolate and a touch of hoppy bitterness. Some caramel. A smooth and nice flavour that is very drinkable. Stronger than it tastes.

Mouthfeel is also good. Moderate carbonation (almost too much), and a nice creamy body.

Overall, a nice stout. Nothing surprising or unusual, just a tasty beer. Overall rating reflects the fact that I oscillated between 3.5 and 4 for taste.

A very deep brown in color, not quite black. a finger or 2 of tan head that doesn't hang around long. smell is dark roast coffee and unsweetened chocolate. Taste starts off with some bitterness and is quickly balanced out by some sweet, roasty malts. Not too heavy or too thin in the mouth. Quite nice. Overall, a very nicely done stout, but no huge flavors that make this extra memorable. But, I would pick it up again. good apres ski beer

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to s thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or bubbles seen coming up through the glass. Nice lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Vanilla, creamy, chocolate, toasted malts, and roasted malts.

Taste: Creamy vanilla, smoke, ash, chocolate, roasted coffee, and some toasted malts.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, smoky bitterness, full bodied, and medium carbonation.

Overall: Pretty nice American stout that is drinkable and enjoyable.

This stout pour dark with thick creamy, dark tan head. The head retains throughout the drink creating very nice lacing.

Aromas of chocolate and coffee are accompanied by roasted malt.

The taste doesn't deter far from the smell, starting with chocolate and coffee nodes with slight roasted maltiness and ending slightly dry.

The stout has a pleasant creaminess with a medium to full mouthfeel and lots of small bubble carbonation.

Could definitely throw a few of these back and not get too far ahead of yourself.

Dark brown pour with long lasting tan head and lacing.

Aroma of toasted grain, dark malts, and a bit of coffee.

The body is medium to better than medium.

The taste brings out a coffee, grainy character with an earthy bitter bite at the end.

Appearance - dark garnet color. Thin, light mocha head with scant papery lacing.

Aroma - pleasant smoky and roasted grain. Hints of coffee peek through, then increase as the beer settles.

Taste - heavily charred malt, burnt espresso beans. Some moderate bitterness on the swallow, blending with the charcoal flavor. Not the widest range of flavors, but the intensity is good.

Mouthfeel - fairly good body yet still a little thin for an "out of bounds" stout. Peppy carbonation.

Drinkability - pretty good stuff but there are better rounded stouts that appeal more to me.

A- dark brown to black with a smooth powdery head.

S- strong rich chocolate, with hints of vanilla, coffee and cherries.

T- oak aged dark roasted coffee beans with waves of bitter woody hops.

M- initially almost over-carbonated fading to a thin, slightly watery finish.

D- a complexed stout, but the bitter coffee flavors were a little abrasive and it seemed a bit distracting at times.

Appearance: Pours black with a 1/2"-thick head that quickly thins out, leaving a nice lacing behind.

Smell: Coffee, caramel, and nutty.

Taste and Mouthfeel: Coffee dominates (a bit overwhelming) and is backed by roasted and nutty malts. Overall the mouthfeel is a bit thin, very smooth, and dry. Moderate carbonation. A bitter coffee taste is left behind after each sip.

Drinkability: While it's pretty easy to drink a bottle of this, I wouldn't make it a session beer.

Worth a try.

Appearance: Dark with some ruby highlights. Attractive light caramel head in a good amount, reduces down to a static 3/8 inch of good color, leaves tiered lacing.

Smell: Nice brown sugar smell, singed maple twigs, crumbled baker's chocolate.

Taste: Emphasis on roasted taste, a little too much so. The taste doesn't balance well. There's a lot of roast up front, leaving the tongue to feel like it's missing the rest. A lot of baker's chocolate up front. Still, interesting and stimulating. I just feel it needs a little backup to round out the flavor a bit.

Mouthfeel: A little too thin. Carbonation creates a somewhat odd effect. I'm not sure if it enhances or detracts from the overall feeling. As carbonation levels off after a minute, the beer begins to feel like a dry stout again. I am enjoying it.

Drinkability: Excellent initial roasted taste and dryness. However, after that novelty wears away, it leaves a little too much of a void for the rest of the beer. Still, a nice dry stout whose smell I prefer over the average, and taste will make it stand out in my mind.

Pours a dark mahogany color with a solid cap of khaki foam. The aroma features plenty of roasted malt, along with coffee, dark chocolate, earthy hops, and hints of peanut brittle and peat. Broad sheets of finely reticulated lacing adorn the glass as the beer recedes.

The taste follows through on the big, roasty flavors promised by the nose. The bitterness is up there, both on account of the burnt malt as well as the earthy hops. Complexity is minimal, coming in the form of dark chocolate, nuts, and licorice, but the taste remains solid nonetheless. Medium body and carbonation afford a smooth, semi-creamy mouthfeel with a supremely dry finish.

Overall, this is a fine, full-flavored, roasty stout. It could do with a bit more body and complexity, but there are no major flaws that would stop me from enjoying it again.

So far this kind winter, there have been enough ridiculous powder days that most of my shredding has taken place in bounds. However, there are always days when even the back bowls are skied out and it is necessary to seek pow elsewhere. This is when I ski out of bounds, and afterward, there is nothing better than a big, roasty stout for apr├Ęs. Avery's Out of Bounds Stout is just that, an Irish Dry Stout made with an abundance of roasted barley and a mountain of hops. This, plus the overall quality and complexity of this beer stand it out as different, and yeah, I'll say it, way better than the most popular examples of Irish Stouts like Guinness, Beamish, and Murphy's.

Let me explain. Out of Bounds pours black as night with some rusty highlights on the edge. The head is plentiful, milk chocolate in color, and drops readily leaving a nice lace ring. I am drawn in with inviting aromas, predominately of coffee, accompanied by sweet malt and toffee. The flavor is even more pronounced than the smell led on. Foremost, I really enjoy this dry style of stout because it allows for an awesome toasty flavor and a really balanced, but apparent hoppy bitterness (you know Avery loves their hops)! Nutty caramel and cocoa open the palate, leading way to that roasty, toastiness with the hops and little smoke. The finish is lasting, dry and a bit woody. The 6.3% ABV is higher than normal for the style, but it still maintains a surprising level of drinkability in it's body and mouthfeel.

Out of Bounds Stout is going to be very versatile when it comes to food pairings. Try it with your favorite braised or other slow cooked meats. Last night I enjoyed mine with some Osso Bucco and they complimented each other very nicely. Especially this time of year, a great cheese pairing for this Stout would be Hoch Ybrig, a raw cow's milk cheese from the mountains of Switzerland that is washed in a white wine brine. This cheese has a strong, full flavor from the wash that will stand up well to the strength of the Stout. This is also a fondue cheese, and your Out of Bounds would go great with fondue!

Out Of Bounds Stout: pours a very deep black, not much light if any can penetrate. A vigorous pour splashed up some tannish head, with fairly long lasting staying power. The aroma is somewhat chocolatey, with a bit of coffee. First sip is somewhat hoppy, with some coffee flavors as well. Very deep into the aftertaste, there is a nice blast of roasted malts. The taste is nice, the mouthfeel is very smooth. Nice balance, and taste, easy to drink, and worth picking up.

Pours a pitch black color with a one finger tan head that leaves medium-thick lacing down my pint glass. Looks almost like a better version of Coca-Cola. Smell is faint, get some dark roasted malts, roasty flavors in general and a almost hoppy citrus smell, mostly just roasted malts though, nothing overly great here. Taste is good, tastes again of mostly roasted malts, with a good hop and citrus balance, definitely some oatmel sweetness in here too, a good solid stout taste. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for a stout here, a little watery but still almost medium, a strange citrusy malt taste is left on the tongue from this one, different than any stout I have had. Drinkablity is decent here, not too thick, no alcohol or bad tastes, might get filling after a while though, and I personally would get sick of the aftertaste.

deep black/brown with moderate tan head that fades to half a finger. good lacing.
the aroma is mostly of milk chocolate with some molasses. a little burnt. pretty subtle overall.
the taste has a nice smooth chocolatey flavor that moves into the molasses, some coffee, and a little bit of burnt malt. there's some moderate bitterness, but i don't find much in the way fo hop flavor. pretty dry while maintaining sweet sort of flavors. interesting effect, and quite good.
the mouthfeel, i would say, is medium bodied, but with pretty active carbonation that i could do with some toning down of.
the drinkability is good, as i said, pretty dry and as a result refreshing, like many irish stouts. a little more chocolatey though.

I've grown fond of Avery over the last few years, & somehow this one has escaped my attention to date.

Pours black, surprize, surprize. Full tan head makes me happy, with big, booming bubbles rather than those dainty things most beers boast. Smell isn't strong, lots of faint odors mixing in.

I have to admit I've never heard of an Irish Dry Stout, but I like it & will look up others of the style. It's tasty. A little more hop-like bite to it than a regular stout, to go along with the earthy, malty taste & a distinct chunk of dirt in the nose (in a good way).

Feels rich & pleasing in the mouth, & benefits from a unique taste to my untrained palate.

Had on tap at Avery. Poured a lovely deep, dark brown with a large, creamy beige head. Lacing was excellent. Aroma was that of chocolate, roasted malts and coffee. Taste is smooth with a nice chocolate/roasted malt taste with undertones of coffee. Bitter and dry to an extent, but not overly so.

Creamy...very, very easy to drink! Only got a sample, but I certainly could have had a full pint of this. Unfortunately when you are sampling 18 or so brews, pints aren't always in order.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a tulip

L: Dark, dark brown pour.. nearly black. 1.5 fingers of off-white head. Modest ring of lacing.

S: Roasted grains... chocolate and coffee. Sweet and toasty.

T/F: Follows the nose. Nice roasted malts and grains. Good cocoa and espresso notes. Mild hopping at the end adds some bitterness to the roast. Medium in body. Finish is espresso and slightly acidic.

O: A pretty standard stout. Good quality and flavor. Nothing earth shattering but a stand-up representation of the style.

Very dark brown brew, with one and a half fingers of tan froth. Lots of coffee in the smell, with hints of caramel and chocolate, but not enough for my tastes. The taste brings out a bit more of the sweetness of chocolate and caramel to thankfully complement the coffee, which is still a bit overwhelming for me. I'd prefer less coffee and more chocolate. The mouthfeel is odd--hints of wood that are a welcome surprise, but with a slightly flat texture that detracts from the feel and taste overall.

This isn't a complete disappointment, but I was certainly hoping for more from Avery, whose wares are normally top-shelf. Not this one. Irish Dry Stout is an apt style, but not one with which I'm enamored. This needs more balance in the flavors. Coffee is fine; primarily coffee minimizes the contributions of other elements that can only improve this nice, but not great, beer.

Poured into pint glass.

A: Pours a dark, dark brown with tannish-head. Sticky trails left behind as the head recedes to a light blanket with some big bubbles scattered.

S: Roasted grain at first, with some wheat germ or walnuts. Bit of a cereal grain aroma, too. Oat bran or bran flakes.

T/M: Cereal grain flavor up front with some roasted grain on top of that (it really does have two distinct grain characteristics). There's a bitterness as the sip works its way to the back of your mouth. Finish is long, bitter, and burned. This is a pretty dry beer, so the category is accurate.

D: Pretty solid stout. Nothing unexpected, but nothing out of whack. Dry, pleasant on a cold day, and hits the spot. I can see myself eaasily enjoying one or two of these in an evening.
