Dark amber with a small fizzy film.

Smell is toffee, bread dough, caramel, butter.

I taste cherry cough syrup, honey, verging on barleywine territory if not for the breadiness coming in at times. When you go 10% for a "Marzen" can you really call it that anymore? This is just an American blonde barleywine or something that just so happens to be brewed and released around autumn...

Feel is pretty boozy and hot, while slightly fizzy.

From the bottle, it pours a moderately dark amber with a small head, quickly dissipating into a thin layer. Some lacing as you enjoy the beer. Serious malt in the nose and in the expected. Yum!

Bottled Aug. 2014.
Poured into Solemn Oath snifter.
Age has obviously flattened it a bit. Not much carb or lacing. Golden brown, reminds me of a boch for some reason. Much more malt than a usual lager. Don't have a ton of Oktoberfest/marzen experience, but I bet this would have been awesome September/October '14. I had to buy it because I'm an Avery fan and saw it on vacation.

Pours honey amber with a medium white head. Malt and caramel aromas. Taste of malt and caramel, with a nice aftertaste. Mild carbonation. A well balanced beer.

Aroma is strong caramel/toffee, bread/malts and light fruit. The flavor is strong caramel/toffee, malts, fruit, slightly grainy and a mix of alcohol and slightly cloying sweetness in the finish.

All the classic Oktobefest flavors are here, amped up of course. Toasted dark bread, caramel, spicy hops. Delicious. But after that wave the alcohol heat moves in and overtakes those flavors and lingers. This would be outstanding if the alcohol was dialed back a notch.

Thoroughly enjoyed from the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This FINE fest pours a deep luminous orange with an off white head of foam that settles to a thick ring, light wispy layer, and light lacing. Nose of heavy caramel, rich fresh bread, and spicy hop notes. Flavors pound that aroma found on the nose with rich layers of caramel and fresh baked bread on all sides fading to a golden raisin and spicy hop aftertaste warmed by copious amounts of alcohol and lingering light grain notes. Lightly crisp and warming with moderate with nice carbonation to keep it lively while cutting through the sweetness.
Always have one every couple of years. Always welcome.

A clear, watery looking red pour with a thin white head. A typical malty, sweet Carmel smell. A very interesting sweet, hoppy taste up front that fades to the Carmel malt taste. It is the closest thing to the SN Octoberfest. Never would have guessed 10 % alcohol. A top notch Marzen!

The bottle I had was from last year, and i'm not sure how much the age affected it. But this is a big, high abv beer, super sweet and malty, and to me borders on barley wine territory. An enjoyable enough fall beer, but if i'm looking for a more traditional marzen, I would be looking elsewhere.

On tap at Barcade in Philly. Served in a stemmed globe. This is a fine fall beer. If you have the choice though, opt for the Rumpkin or PumpKYn from Avery. Great marzen.

Looks like your typical American Oktoberfest: Amber in color with a tan head. Smell is of a sweet caramel and bready malts. The taste is huge; super sweet and complex malts from caramel to breads and toffee and brown sugar. Sticky sweet mouthfeel. Overall an excellent interpretation of the "imperial Oktoberfest."

Pours a deep clear amber with about one finger of light tan/off-white head. The head settles quickly, with just a smear of it across the top. It leaves some tight soapy lacing. The aroma is big and malty, with caramel and brown bread and a slight hint of hops. The body is a little less robust, but still quite good with a little more of the hops and a little less of the malts. The body has a nice, thicker weight to it and a smooth feel.

This is not a style I've had before - imperial Marzen.

Color is slightly darker red than expected but makes sense with more sugar from malt necessary for a higher ABV.

Nose and taste are actually very standard for an Oktoberfest. If I didn't know this was north of 9% I wouldn't be able to tell from the taste. Nice malty sweetness lingers long. Very gentle on the palate, no rough edges that I was expecting. This was quite a surprise but I think it's quite tasty.

an imperial octoberfest is not a style you see very much of out there, so its a real intriguing one as they go. usually i drink a six pack of octoberfest as a minimum dose, better yet several liters, so this really changes the rate of consumption for the style too. it looks right on, rusty orange with some darker edges and a big airy white head with nice retention and residual lace. smells sweet and german, also right on. really not all that different from a regular strength marzen type, as the malt profile is really similar, caramelized malt and munich malts as well as some leftover sugar. you cant smell the booze at all. there are more hops in the end than i am used to, thats for sure. short of bitter because of all the grain, but flavorful for certain, grassy and bold, this is where the imperial part of this starts to make sense. the body is really big, even with all the bubbles, and as it warms, the alcohol starts to come out a little more. that said, it drinks way too easy for how strong it is. this is a late fall dream for me, beautifully executed, and maybe my favorite of the dictator series! totally original concept

This was poured into a mug.
The appearance was a nice looking bronzed amber color with a one finger white foaminess sticking nicely all around the glass. Light stringy lacing slides into the beer after several sips.
The smell takes crisp sweet caramel malts and blends into a slight sweet nuttiness gripping tight edgy earthy hops.
The taste follows the smell sweetly with a light breadiness.
The mouthfeel sits about a light to medium bodied with a nice sessionability about it. Carbonation rides low allowing a really nice sticky sweetness over my tongue, but not overly cloying (did I just use that word, whoah, I think I'm gettin' it on here).
Overall, nice Oktoberfest, I'd have this one again.

The beer pours a nice white head that dissipates quickly but still leaves a nice healthy lacing on the surface. The beer itself is a nice glowing medium amber that strongly resembles copper. The appearance is very good because of how festive it looks due to the glowing copper color and looks like it has some weight to it as well.

The smell is also pretty good but nothing to seriously distinguish it from other good Oktoberfests. The smell is a sweet caramel note from the malt and a little bit of sweetness from the alcohol. The smell also has a bit of bready maltiness as well. There is a slight hop bitterness but it's mostly mute.

The taste is delicious. Even though the taste has a slight hint of the alcohol, its sweetness adds to the brew. The beer has all the caramel and light bread notes from the malt. The hop bitter and florral note is much stronger in the taste but still weaker compared to the malt.

The feel is good. Heavy bodied but smooth and fluffy carbonation to give it a fuller feel. The finish is a tiny bit dry but mainly a bit sticky. Still, it drinks like a normal Oktoberfest, which is not a bad thing.

Overall, a pretty good Oktoberfest. While the difference is subtle, the extra bit of malt and alcohol adds to quite a good experience. I recommend it.

Pours a deep red with a thin bubbly head and a malty nose to it. Well its a sweet marzen. With a slight malt back to it. I do taste some hops to it but the imperial overpowers it eventually.

My bottle lists the ABV as 9.5%, and it says "Batch No. 11" "Aug 2014" so this is exactly one year old. The date code is printed to the right of the "A" on the front of the label.

Appearance: Murky orange and medium-brown body with a fairly thick eggshell white head with tinges of yellow. I can barely even make out shadows in the glass.

Aroma: It has a huge caramel malty aroma similar to that of a Doppelbock. Smelling this blind I would probably mistake it for one. It is a very nice smell.

Taste: There is a medium caramel flavor here...not too strong but prominent enough to come out of the background. I pick up some light bread flavor in there as well. Of great notable importance is that this beer does not have any alcohol flavor at all. This beer has been aged for a year so that could have something to do with it.

Mouthfeel: it is a very thick beer. As an Imperial Oktoberfest it doesn't drink at all like its lower ABV cousin. The thick dexterous quality of the beer greatly hampers its drinkability.

Overall: I really liked the beer. I could only get this one which was aged for a year but it has a nice malty sweetness which is great. I really don't think it draws a close relationship to the traditional Oktoberfest beer other than that it has a good malt presence. If the body was a bit more attenuated it would be perfect, but as it is the beer is still quite enjoyable. I can't speak to the fresh version of this beer but if you like sweet malty high alcohol beers then I would recommend it. I would recommend it especially to fans of Doppelbocks.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, almost opaque, golden amber color, speckled with orange highlights and a quarter of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic with strong aromas of bready, toasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked soft pretzels. I also get strong notes of black pepper, brown sugar, light molasses, caramel and touches of ripe fruit, such as plums and apricots. Finally, I get some aromas of floral, grassy hops.

Taste: Wow! Exceptional beer! Like the aroma, I get strong flavors of bready, toasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked soft pretzels. I also get strong notes of black pepper, brown sugar, light molasses, caramel and touches of ripe fruit, such as plums and apricots. Finally, I get some beautifully balanced, floral, grassy hops, at the finish. Absolutely delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy, and extremely smooth, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 9.5%, there is a subtle, pleasant hint of alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is quite an exceptional Oktoberfest-style beer. Probably the best I’ve had outside of fresh from the cask fest biers I’ve had in Germany. Avery’s hit a grand-slam with this one!

Poured from bomber; a deep, dark brown amber with about one finger of strong head. Aroma was potent and sweet-smelling, and reminded me specifically of barleywine. Taste gave the same impression, and I was surprised to know this was not a barleywine, technically. Very sweet, malty flavors. Mouthfeel was medium-bodied and easy to drink.

sampled from a 22oz in a 12oz chalice

l - poured a beautiful soft amber, with nice carbonation and a thin white head, that built evenly to about .5", but dropped quickly. nice even lacing that moved quicikly down the sides of the glass, not a lot of hang.
s - a nice whiff of caramel/toffee and hits of turbinado sugar open up to a medium malty aroma, slight hint of alcohol, then finishes with another big hit of toasted sugar
t - a strong kick of alcohol, sherry like; opens to heavy notes of caramel and molasses - and then finishes warmly (9.5abv), with a nice hit of brown butter tart shell. very sweet, but with a good amount of astringency that quickly pulls the sweet away
f - light to medium body, good carbonation on the palate, a little little tannic like a mild sherry
0 - a very well made beer, if you're looking for a traditional marzen style oktoberfest beer this isn't it, this is an imperial Oktoberfest. As one reviewer said, this seems to be better suited as a holiday beer - served after thanksgiving. I'll be curious to see if this style becomes more popular, something tells me it will

Appearance: pours a modest off white head that slowly falls with mild lacing. Color is a cloudy amber with mild streaming carbonation.

Aroma: rich aroma of caramel, tangerine, and bread dough.

Mouthfeel; light to medium bodied, quite sticky, with a dry and warming alcohol finish.

Flavor: caramel, toasted bread, raisin, cinnamon, tangerine are all prominent.

Overall: nothing to criticize with this beer. Quite delicious.

Traditional Oktoberfest beers were more or less just stronger versions of standard Helles lagers ("helles", I'll remind you, means "light"). Nowadays, however, brewers are adding more and more dark malts. And The Kaiser - a so-called "Imperial Oktoberfest" - has certainly done so; its clear complexion is far more ruby-amber than orange (let alone golden).

And if the colour didn't tip you off, the aroma sure will - this smells far sweeter than the style should. In fact, it doesn't smell much like a Märzen at all. Wafts of mulled cider, caramel sweetness, and dried fruits are vaguely Speyside scotch-like. It seems malty, rich, dense, and warming.

Indeed. The flavour profile is strikingly Barleywine-esque. Or perhaps it's more like a Doppelbock. Here, decide for yourself: there's plenty of apple, dried cherry and fig flavours, and a rich maltiness that smacks of toffee, molasses and, very subtly, of gingerbread cookies.

The Kaiser sure conquers the palate; the mouthfeel is marked by macerated fruit esters and honeyed, sticky-sweet maltiness. I'm still reminded of a Speyside whiskey, a notion furthered by the beer's less than subtle booziness (though in fairness it does go down with blissful ease).

The Kaiser may be intended as an autumn beer but nearly everything about it - right down to its warming alcohol presence - is strongly reminiscent of Christmas. (Actually, there's a striking amount of similarity to Eggenberg's Samichlaus.) I like the beer a great deal but sure 'tis no Oktoberfest. Buy a bomber, but don't open it until the pumpkin is composting and the tree is decorated and lit.
