The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of our friend Tom Boogaard’s grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart.

Our brewers included as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as they could, making this the perfect beer for folks who love malty beers and are ready to take the next step. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content.

The Reverend is the second installment of “The Holy Trinity of Ales” series.

Food pairing: Try The Reverend with a gyro or paired with our favorite: steamed spicy saffron mussels.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a garnet hue with a small head that fizzed out quickly. Strong alcohol aroma along with caramel and spices. Malty sweetness and alcohol flavors dominate the palate with little if any hop presence. A so-so mouthfeel is syrupy sweet.

This beer has a raw , unrefined character. The syrupy sweetness and strong alcohol taste dominate this potentially excellent brew. I'm cellaring a couple bottles in hopes of discovering a diamond in the rough.

Caramel sweet and yeasty, with a bit of dark fruit and some clove. Not bad.

12oz can from slice and biscuit. Normal enough pour, dark amber, light mahogany hue, small ring of bubbly head. Smell is also right on, raisins, plums, a bit of Belgian yeast. Taste is definitely spot-on, right in the zone. Overall feel is just a little bit lacking. Still up pretty high quality quad but just shy of a superior quad

From the can, dated around Memorial Day. Almost no head. Aroma mild, raisin and a bit of spice. Taste, (You Catholics from a former will get this) Communion wine up the middle, spicy all around the edges. Feel a lot thicker than you'd expect. Pretty good IMHO

L: Pours a dark amber reddish with a small white head and no lacing on the glass.

S: Strong note of Belgian candi sugar mixes with sweet caramel, a bit of dark stone fruit and some earthy bitterness.

T: A nice hit of Belgian Candi Sugar, some dark stone fruit, a sweet caramel, and a slight earthy bitterness.

F: Good carbonation with a larger body.

O: Definitely old school but still good.

Looks dark ruby, almost like a red ale.

The smell reminds me of fermented grapes and has a slight yeast quality.

The flavor provides that heavily fermented flavor that makes it taste similar to wine. After holding it in my mouth and exhaling, the flavor and smell of booze are very apparent. The fruitiness is honestly a bit muted from what I would expect from a quad, but the caramel maltiness is apparent. Still pretty good, but it feels like the flavor is quite thin even though the beverage feels quite thick in your mouth.

Impressive and delicious, but there are other quads at this price point that deserve your money more. The Belgian-style yeast/fermentation really shines through, but it takes away some of the fruity, fig-like qualities that are in other quads. I'd say a perfectly average quad (which is actually quite a good beer!)

Right down the middle for the style, not a ton of complexity or layers, but delicious (molasses bread, figs, cherries, allspice and pepper, caramel and candied sugars), well balanced, and (for the abv) not too hot. Excellent on a cold winter's night.

draught
Dark, auburn, chestnut, amber orange look. Fairly heady aromas of sweet allspice, butterscotch, heavily caramelized, medium dark roast malt. Medium bodied, sweet opening of a caramel, little bit of Yunnan black tea, a touch of molasses and raisin flavor. A bit light for this style. Finishes with a caramel and black tea note.

Nice amber color, not too much of a head. Smell is sweet and alcoholic: honey, figs, Belgian yeast, esters, coriander, and dark bread. Lots of caramel malt in the mouth, more honey and figs, some yeast in the body, esters, bittering a bit and finishing with well pronounced spice. The alcohol is quite noticeable on the finish and by the chest warmth. This is really good, if a bit unpolished.

Look: Poured from a 12 oz can. Nice slightly hazy copper color with an off white, thin head that melts to a narrow ring around the glass and good lace on the sides.
Smell and Taste: Malt sugars and some molasses are dominate.
Feel: Well balanced between the hops, sweetness the malts, and the ABV.
Overall: YES! I can see me drinking this one again.

I thought this was yummy and hit the spot. Easy drinking and then 10% sat well with me in this case so that's always fun. I haven't had much quads to compare it to but I did like this and would get it again

Looks nice, brown with a little ruby. Smell is sweet, candy-like, but a bit too much alcohol. Friend of mine said it smelled like rubbing alcohol. Taste was a let down for me. I typically love the quads. It was syrupy, bit much on the boozey side.
