The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of our friend Tom Boogaard’s grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart.

Our brewers included as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as they could, making this the perfect beer for folks who love malty beers and are ready to take the next step. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content.

The Reverend is the second installment of “The Holy Trinity of Ales” series.

Avery 15th anniversary vertical tasting

A - Clear light brown color with red highlights, and a long lasting head.
S - complex marriage of fruity esters, spicy phenolics, malt and hops.
T - Great malt complexity that is well blended with dark fruit flavors and hop bitterness.
M - Full bodied with an alcohol warmth and a smooth finish.

A - Surprisingly, this color was noticeably darker than the other two vintages.
S - Malt is becoming more complex and beginning to dominate the aroma. Phenols and esters are noticeable but not as much as the 2008.
T - The malt is much more complex as well as a bit more bitterness, the phenols and esters begin to fade a bit leaving the malt to shine.
M - Mouth feel remains much the same perhaps a bit more smooth.

A - Similar to the 2008 color a light brown with long lasting head but a bit hazy.
S - Extreme malt complexity and domination. Caramel, toffee, etc.... Esters are vary subdued as are phenolics.
T - Malt complexity dominates accompanied by some subtle yet firm fruity ester flavors (Dark fruits, berries, etc) and spice.
M - Full bodied beer, with a good pull, and smooth warmth.

This is another amazing beer to taste as it ages.... While the 2008 vintage is good, the older it gets, the more complexity and balance the beer achieves, with the 2002 ranking 1st out of the 3.

Well done beer...
Aroma: slightly sweet and hoppy, and alcoholic
Appearance: Copper to amber, good head with legs
Body: light and crisp
Mouthfeel: spicy and alcoholic, with a long finish
Overall: very enjoyable; at the high ABV, definitely not a session beer

Poured into a chalice. Decent initial head that fades after a little while. Still stirs into a decent head after a while.

Smell of apple phenol. I LOVE APPLE PHENOL SON. Candy like smell with a lot of undertones and some caramel malt. Damn. I'm impressed.

Nice mouthfeel. This beer is just awesome.

Taste is slightly candy like. Has a slight apple undertone with some caramel malts, belgian funkiness and slight hop bitterness. I noticed the alcohol at 10%, but it wasnt' overbearing. My first quadrupel. I look forward to my westveletern now. Very nice style of beer. Nice upfront sweetness with good alcohol and slight hop finish. MMM. good beer.

Clings to the palate well. Very nice

I ran out of my bomber fast and wanted more. That says something doesn't it?

22 ounce bottle, red foil capped, with witty notes on the label. States 10% ABV.

Poured into wide mouthed goblet. Poured a medium dense, slightly fizzy head that dissipates rapidly, leaves zero lacing, and basically zero head. Color is medium reddish copper, bright and clear.

Aroma is complex: sugar, figs, prunes, candy, and earthy spiciness.

Taste is delightfully simple, yet nuanced: most of the aromas noted above come through, and a bright, warm crispness and alcohol warmth. This isn't an iron fist in a velvet glove: it's an iron fist in an iron glove. I love it. Delicious and bright, crisp carbonation despite the lack of visible carbonation or head.

A delicious beer that I've been drinking regularly since at least 2002, and will continue drinking as often as I can get my hands on it.

Poured a cloudy aprocot with a half finger of white that melted to a film of lacing.

Scents of sweet amber malts and light citrus fruits... oranges, pineapples, tangerines...light citrus fruits.

Sweet mouthfill of candied malts and light citrus fruits...same as what you smell...tastes of pineapple, tangerine, orange...very very light, pale lemon.

Everything about this quad is bright, fresh, and clean, IMHO.
WAY too drinkable.
VERY enjoyable.
I enjoyed this bottle immensley and will have to revisit St. Berny for a refernce point because this was downright delicious.

First rating and hardly a connoisseur, but as an average Joe beer drinker who doesn't like a bitter finish, I find The Reverend to be very smooth. An excellent, creamy head and consistent finish. The smell wasn't all that noticeable, but all of the other aspects were very pleasant.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter.

Pours a surprisingly light slight amber with almost no head at all. Nose is lightly boozy, hoppy, rye and very rich, no idea this is a quad.

Taste is awesome! Pretty damn complex with a light hoppiness and a solid toasty/malty backbone to it. Great beer and my favorite quad after three philosophers.

Poured from a bomber into a Chimay goblet... this one is a deep red color with hints of orange. Small white head despite the hard pour... looks tasty but not the best appearance ever.

I like the smell a lot... Belgian spices, fruity, a little alcohol presence, some malts as well. Very nice.

Great taste to it! Malty, a little bready, but the fruit flavors come through as well. This is definitely a fantastic Belgian-style ale for an American brewery. I'm very impressed, another solid offering from Avery.

Too bad I have to go to Houston to get these, and they don't have the full lineup, I could drink Avery all the time otherwise.

Red-amber with golden highlights and a finger of beige head.

Faint nose, with some alcohol and cherry.

Intense, chewy caramel taste, powerful malt and faint hop finish. Some raisin and dark cherry. This is really something special. A bit of alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel is thick but not syrupy, just enough texture to support the bold taste.

Overall outstanding as a quad, paired with a bacon BBQ burger, alternately chadder, brie, gouda.

This was not nearly as good in a bottle when I tried it again later.

My first american quadripple as far as I know

Pours Amber color with a tons of bubbles. Impressive filmy head rings my Orval glass. Good head retention and lacing on the bottom of my glass

Smell: Malt, alcohol, yeast, fruitiness and plums

Taste: Sweet Caramel, tart flavors that trend fruitty/bready as the beer warms. Some vanilla/oaky notes with a big fruitty/leather/nutty taste

MF: Effervescent, slick and prickly notes from the carbonation

Pretty drinkable, but one is enough! Reminds me of a turbo-charged double,open your eyes, give it a try

This is a serious quadrupel, very full-flavored and strongly developed. Once again, Avery proves that they are the cream of the crop when it comes to high-alcohol beers. They don't crank up the ABV just because they can; rather, they make a damn good beer that just happens to be 10%. There's a difference, and they understand that. This is a classic Belgian quadrupel, well worth seeking out and trying. You may or may not want to share yours once you buy it though, fair warning.

22 oz bomber.

I brought this back from a ski trip over winter break, and since I didn't really have any other plans for the evening, I decided to crack it open and share it with the roommate. Later, I was very glad I didn't try to take it down by myself.

The Reverend poured a tawny amber-orange color, and resisted every one of my attempts to build any kind of head atop it. All it took was a single whiff to recognize the Belgian heritage - that beautiful, round yeast and fruit aroma was prominent. The taste was very smooth and wet on the palate, with a strong (but enjoyable) alcohol warmness taking over and lingering long after the original sugar plum sweetness fades.

This is a really good sipping beer--but I don't know that I could ever handle more than half a bomber at a time.

As an aside, this helped me break in my brand new New Belgium tulip glass and Chimay glass in style.

The Reverend pours a very clound golden amber with a quickly dissipating head. The aroma is sweet raisiny malt, fruity esters that are almost citrusy and a big alcohol twinge. Flavor is more fruity esters, very sweet and malty with just a hint of roasted taste. There is a lot of nice yeasty complexity and a big alcohol burn, just a little too much, knocking down the drinkability slightly.

GLASS: Chimay Goblet
TEMP: Cellared @ approx 45 degrees

Nice amber color in my glass. One finger head that leaves a slight film on top of the liquid. Slightly decent lacing.

BIG maltiness. Very sweet malty nose. Sweet candy sugars. Butterey, yeasty bread. Light citrus and banana notes.

Quite abit more mellow than I expected, but that is not a bad thing. Very nice caramel notes. Apple and banana notes. Sweet malt flavor. Big yeasty bread profile. Slight spiciness on the finish. The alcohol bite I expected at 10% is not here at all.

Feels very creamy in the mouth, yet still smooth and drinkable. Almost velvet-like.

Drinking several bottles of this in a session would be easy. The drawback is that with 10% ABV, you won't remember doing it.

The beer poured a cranberry amber with a thin, creamy collar of head.

Smelled of cranberries too, along with some cherries, a hint of barbecue sauce and some sort of dry, earthy prune flavor. There was a definite airiness about this one that felt fresh and citrus-like when I smelled it.

The flavor began with a sharp citrus sting but it was backed by a big creamy barley and a touch of ginger and anise. There was also a delightful red grapes and port. Finished with a residual candy sugar.

The mouth feel was only medium bodied and clean with a light carbonation.

This one’s an awesome sipper. I feel stupid for having left this one on my shelf for so long. I really should have had this sooner. It’s very light for the stile and very tasty!

I picked this one up at a local bottle shop that had slashed the price in half. I couldn’t say no. The beer itself is not dated, but the bottle is from 2003. I would venture to guess this comes from late 2003/early 2004. A caveat: I have no ‘fresh’ review by which to compare this.

Avery’s Reverend comes out of the bottle a dingy, reddened copper with fine clarity. This is followed immediately by the production of a small, quick collapsing head and minor waves of lace. Oddly, this beer seems to show no sign of bottle conditioning.

The nose of this beer showcases in particular the wondrous properties of Belgian yeast; rising bread dough, crackers, spice. Also featured heavily on the nose is alcohol, (rotting) apples, candi sugar.

The taste surprises me with its lack of classically ‘quadrupel’ flavors. My palate seems to detect a chocolate-maltiness akin to some barleywines. Instantly warming to the belly, this beer is uncharacteristically smooth flowing over the tongue and into the gullet.

As with well-aged examples of Belgian-style beers, there is a superb intermingling of sweet sugar flavors, alcohol, and malt. I did not expect this coming from an American interpretation, particularly from this brewery which has been known to release ‘hot’ Belgian-style beers in the past. Not this one. Just a velvet sipper all the way through. Also interesting is a definite hop presence which I rarely get from these styles of beer.

As I mentioned, the mouthfeel is palate-coatingly silky. Gummy at first, the mouthfeel then gives way to a tart, quenching sensation.

Incredibly drinkable for the style, I was quite impressed with this beer. Age obviously has a lot to do with this. I would be interested to see how this beer was fresh, but with some age on it I’d have to concede its one of the best American-made examples I’ve encountered.

T- This is what I'm talking about, the spice and candy sweetness are in fantastic balance. This is a favorite among my friends.
M- Warm and crisp.
D- very drinkable, but that could be very dangerous!!!

Poured from a bomber into a Raging Bitch tulip.

Pours a cloudy red-brown with little to no head. Smells of light fruits with a crisp finish. Smooth initial taste with a lot of malty sweetness and a hint of hop bite. Finishes with smooth fruit tones and a clean crisp finish.

11/07/05- Received via trade with Lostbearbrew.

Presentation- 22oz bottle with no freshness info. Poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance- Shared this with another BA. Odd that his pour had a decent sized haed and better than average lace and mine had no head and no lace? Odd. Brilliant caramel colored pour almost looking like cognac.

Smell- Light alcohol whiff, dark fruits and malt.

Taste- Sweet caramel with a light burning of alcohol that comes in towards the end of the glass. Plums and prunes are dispalyed nicely in the flavor.

Mouthfeel- Heavy feeling in the pallete, alcohol coating in the mouth. Lightly carbonated.

Appearance: ruby brown with a general clear appearance. Nice white lacing that holds tightly around the edge.

Smell: Molasses with a biscuit scent & a raisin/dark fruit hint.

Taste & mouthfeel: my god this ale hides the alcohol very well. Good on you Reverand. The raisin/plum/dark fruit flavor is what I notice upfront. It's a bit sweet with a bready feel. Like a mild cinammon raisin loaf. The molasses flavor then comes into play with a bit of drying effect and hop presence. The body is medium and like I said before, the 10% abv is hidden so well...what a conniving trick you have played upon me, Reverand!

Overall: glory be the light and mine eyes are open to the golden way! This is one awe inspiring beer that I'm glad that had rested in the belly of this beast! Amen my brothers & sisters...Amen!

A: deep golden/dark orange/amber color; heavy, creamy head about 1.5 fingers thick; sticky, with lots of lacing sitting on top and the sides of the glass throughout the drink

S: honey, bananas, fig, cherries and other dark fruits, sweet candied sugar, spicy clove, zesty citrus orange peel (and maybe vanilla and cinnamon?); complex and deep, very inviting

T: wonderfully complex, as expected for a quad; all the aroma flavors, with alcohol tossed in; the honey and spiced flavors hit up front, with the bold fruit flavors soaked in alcohol (but not too strong); the dark candied sugar so familiar to Belgian-style beers lasts throughout, leaving a heavy sweetness at the back end of each taste; as the beer warms, a candied fruit and alcohol taste dominates; extremely delightful and enjoyable flavor

M: thick, sweet, and tongue-coating; not too heavy to be called syrupy, but not too light either; perfect balance; velvety smooth on the tongue and throat

O: probably the best American-born Belgian Quad I've had; complex and strong; really a heavyweight in the alcohol department, so be careful! I'd drink it all day if it weren't so strong

Rich and malt-laden with hints of toffee and some honeyed biscuits, this is a magnificent intepretation of the Belgian quadruple. Yeasty, sweet, nobly hopped, with hints of alcohol coming through on the tail end. The Reverend is robust and typically Belgian, with a distinctive Avery bittering and finish. This puts some trappists to shame.

Relax, relax.

On draft at KClingers: Bright red with only a thin veil to top it off. The aroma is somewhat raisin-like. Onto the drink ... this is exceptionally smooth and easy to drink. Sweet syrupy but not too much, very well balanced. Why do I think there’s a monster lurking just below the surface of this innocent-feeling brew? (#2715, 2/18/2007)

Pours cloudy orange-amber with a slight head and virtually no lacing.

Smell is sweet malty, clove, and an underlying fruitiness.

Taste is sweet caramel malt with apricot and plum fruitiness up front. Finish is clean but mild bitter hop and peppery spices. Fruit and warming alcohol lingers.

Mouthfeel is full and round. Very smooth and slightly oily.

This is a tasty treat that I plan to drink this again. Alcohol is well concealed. Fruity and complex with a balanced bitterness. It's amazing how easy this is to drink while having such a high ABV.

A- Nice amber/ light copper with a definite haze. Impressive tan head that sticks.

S- Caramel, raisin and toffee, and some warm bread smell.

T- Nice and light but has enough complexity to remain interesting. Same flavors as in the smell along with light bitterness from the hops, warming from alcohol, and tartness from yeast.

M- Nice and light with foamy carbonation

D- Clean, light character keeps this one flowing until you hit the floor.
