The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of our friend Tom Boogaard’s grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart.

Our brewers included as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as they could, making this the perfect beer for folks who love malty beers and are ready to take the next step. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content.

The Reverend is the second installment of “The Holy Trinity of Ales” series.

Food pairing: Try The Reverend with a gyro or paired with our favorite: steamed spicy saffron mussels.

Clear mahogany with a sparse head.

Sugary, honey-y, date-y.

Fruit and honey, bit of a harsh finish. There's a rounded melon that reminds me of galaxy. Real emphasis on the honey, makes it unique but works against it, really. Needs some smoke or char or wood. Or spice.

Too dry for the style.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip is a dirty opaque brown and floats a slight tan head that recedes into an island and glass-hugging ring of tan bubbles.
Dark drunken cherry aroma flows into the taste. Can I get this aroma in a body spray?
Some spice here, coriander maybe, nutmeg... Nice.
Smooth feel, but not really creamy.
I long for a burrito, steak with pickled peppers and carrots.

Poured from a 25 oz bomber into a pint glass. Looks like a glass of tea. Has a sweet smooth texture. ABV is well hidden. Overall an excellent beer.

$ 9.52 (Including tax)/bomber ($ 0.433/oz) at Spec’s, SATX
Bottled 5/17/16 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter, allowed to warm to 50 degrees
Aroma faint – sweet, very faint fruit
Head average (Maximum four cm, aggressive pour), off white, frothy, diminishing to an irregular three to five mm lacy ring and a complete thin layer with one area of heaped bubbles.
Lacing excellent – wide rings of tiny bubbles
Body – dark reddish amber, clear
Flavor – sweet, almost cloying; slight dark fruitiness, alcohol. No hops, no malt, no diacetyl
Palate – medium, syrupy, soft carbonation

Mediocre quad, definitely too cloying for me. The fruitiness of the yeast esters are entirely too weak and thin. One and done.

Appearance 4.25, Aroma 3, Flavor 3, Palate 3, Overall 3

3.63/5: Only a small step below the Belgian stalwarts; still a quality example of the style by any measure

22-oz bottle into snifter

This seemed like the perfect quad to celebrate 4 years since my ordination.

A - transparent body of ruby; not much of a head, but a few off-white bubbles stick around the edges

S - caramel sweetness, cherries and dark fruits, Belgian yeast in the background, a touch of alcohol

T - cherries/dark fruits, sugar, alcohol present but not overpowering, oak/wooden notes, touch of spice

M - lighter than expected; medium body, smooth and oily; low carbonation

O - the perfect beer to sip for hours while discussing theology
