The Reverend, was created in tribute to the life of our friend Tom Boogaard’s grandfather, an ordained Episcopal Reverend. Tom was inspired by the life of his grandfather and wanted to create a tribute beer that contained his sterling traits. True to the spirit and character of the departed Reverend, this beer is strong willed, assertive, and pure of heart.

Our brewers included as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as they could, making this the perfect beer for folks who love malty beers and are ready to take the next step. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness. Sinfully smooth considering the high alcohol content.

The Reverend is the second installment of “The Holy Trinity of Ales” series.

Food pairing: Try The Reverend with a gyro or paired with our favorite: steamed spicy saffron mussels.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass. I’ve had this bottle for a few years, but I do not know exactly how long.

A: The beer is a deep coppery brown color with a short off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains candy sugar, Belgian yeast, caramelized malts, some dark fruit and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of Belgian yeast and a hearty malt character. Then some sweet flavors of candy sugar, caramel and dark fruit come in. There’s a slight touch of an alcohol sting. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Ruby body with a light tan, gray-ish head that leaves a ring and plenty of lace on the glass. Lazy ambient bubbles rise everywhere. Powerful aromas of baked bread, cherry, raisin, caramel malts, mild pepper, and stone greet the nose. The flavor shifts, putting the booziness and some rum-raisin notes before the bread crust and cherry, caramel malt, slight yeast, and earth notes. The body is slightly sticky, medium-full, with fine carbonation.
This was a comprehensive, cohesive offering of a Belgian quadruple. It offered the rich malty notes along with dark fruitiness and earthy yeast components. The body could have been heavier and richer, but apart from that minor note it was a beautiful vision of beers not of this earth (continent).

The beer is clear but a dark amber color. There is some carbonation and a very thin white head. The beer has a strong smell of alcohol, but underneath that I get the sweetness of dark fruits. The alcohol is not as strong in the flavor. Molasses and dark fruits. Overall a nice sweetness to it and no noticeable hops. Good carbonation and a slight stickiness to the beer.

This beer pours a clear reddish brown with a small head. The aroma is rather sharp, with uderripe banana, green apple, candied peach, dried apricot, dates, and tart plum. The flavor features sugared dates, raisins, sour plums, green apple skin, chocolate, nougat, almonds, and a cinnamon finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with light foamy carbonation. Overall this is a delicious Quad. It has this interesting tart fruit quality in addition to a dried and candied quality, which keeps it from being overly saccharine. Quads are a tricky style for me, and this one is a huge hit.

Pours a translucent garnet color with a finger's worth of khaki foam. Mild aroma suggests apples, pears, and plums with caramel and coriander.

The taste features big-time sweetness up front with a vanguard of toffee and raisins, followed by warm, boozy alcohol and modest spicing. Medium body and fine carbonation make for a smooth, slightly sticky mouthfeel.

Overall, this quad comes off a little unwieldy, even if it does tick off all the basic essentials. Not bad, but not something I would seek out to enjoy again.

Poured unhurriedly from a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass at around 53°F
Look: Very carbonated, aggressive but short-lived head, remember to pour this one carefully! Color is a deep amber/red.
Smell: This beer is powerfully aromatic, you'll smell it as soon as you open the bottle. Strong and extremely sweet scent of candy sugar. Deep fruits like cherry, spicy fruits like currant and date. Strong undertones of spices.
Taste: More complex as beer approaches room temp. Strong Mediterranean flavors, currants and dates, very sweet candy flavor, leading into semi-bitter spiciness and strong but brief hints of alcohol.
Feel: Very strong, mouth numbing, sticky, and very carbonated. This is a very strong ABV beer. It will sneak up on you!
Overall: Very sweet, very strong, and a not too stomach-heavy Belgian quad. Even better with a meal. Save this one for special occasions.

Poured into a snifter, dark, opaque brown, minimal head and residual lacing. Strong cherry smell with burnt sugar. Tastes of molasses, brown sugar, barrel-aging, alcohol. Mouthfeel is lighter than I'd expect, still robust. Nice.

22oz bottled 07-22-16 served in a tulip. Cloudy and brassy, like a dirty ruby. Moderate off-white head. Aroma is quite fruity, with banana, bubblegum, tropical fruit punch or candy. A lot of interesting smells not normally associated with beer, or at least not Belgian Quad. Flavor is also sweet, with fruity flavors present on the front of the palate. There's some complexity here, even if it is derived from adjunct sugar. While that initial flavor is intoxicatingly delicious, the aftertaste is cloying and really suffers from being under fermented. If the front of the mouth is exciting fruit flavors, on the way back it turns to rotting fruit flavors. Also, at 10% ABV, this beer is a hangover waiting to happen. The alcohol is well hidden, but boozy booze plus residual sugar equals dehydration equals major hangover. An interesting, if flawed, beer. It's good enough, I certainly don't mind it on the whole, I just wish I hadn't opened whole 22oz of it for myself.

Probably one of the better American made Quads I have ever had, but still falls a bit short of some of Belgium's finest. Still tasty brew, and love the fact that I can now get a Quad in a can!

Poured from a 12 oz can into a tulip

L: Pours a clear dark copper color. 1-2 fingers of white head... sticky lacing.

S: Dark sugars and darker fruits.

T/F: Rich and malty to open... lots of caramel and molasses flavors give it a semi-sweet start. Lots of overripe dark fruits... raisins and plum. Some hops for spiciness and bittering comes into play later. Well carbonated.... sticky and warming.

O: A pretty solid Quad from Avery. Not the absolute best Quad I've ever had but still pretty damned good. Goes down way too easily and would love to try this one barrel aged.

A thanks to the founding father of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of dark fruits, molasses, malts. Taste is malts, molasses, light fruits, a touch of alcohol is present, but not a lot for a 10% abv beer. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer worth trying.
