Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

Light mahogany to walnut dark brown body color, with a good forming top. Light espresso colored head, but with little retention, and a somewhat soapy dissolve. Settles to a very light tan collar, and good bubbled top. Body color actually manages some clarity up towards the head and is pretty clear.

Aroma has a strong sense of wetness but also good barrel quality. Milky vanilla, almost a bit of condensed milk smelling. Warm chocolate almost like a chocolate brandy spirit and crème de cacao aromas are all over this thing. Very good vanilla tones on this that really dominate, but it manages to take much of the other chocolate, roast and barrel characters and bury them quite a bit. It is however, an exceptional vanilla aroma that cant be denied.

Palate takes a big turn. Velvety and rich bodied on first sip, but very light bodied on the tongue. Kirsch and almost fruited brandy like flavors hit at first with wonderful dark chocolate notes. Milky but also huge vanilla flavors in the mid palate coupling with a nice excellent husky charing roast quality. Finishes with spirited dark chocolate cake and bitter hop oils. Cake like density, even some mild nutty almond sneaks in with a marzipan accenting vanilla punch.

Really doesn't seem like this is going to be much at first, but it really delivers. Coffee angle though doesn't really come across, but whatever they added sure as heck didn't ruin anything here. Excellent barrel aged flavored stout.

The booziness doesn't kick you in the face nearly as hard as Uncle Jacobs or Tweak- surprisingly smooth. Strong vanilla, complemented well by the chocolate flavors. And those flavors linger in the best possible way- it's like drinking a delicious dessert that just happens to also be rather efficient at getting you intoxicated. A gourmet, properly balanced version of a Hostess cupcake. Brownie a la mode w/ vanilla bean ice cream. This is candy and I love it.

They like big stouts and they cannot lie... and the Callipygian is one big-ass beer! Massive alcohol is matches with equally as massive sweetness, complexity and body. A big assist from vanilla, chocolate, coffee and with bourbon barrel charm gives this larger-than-life stout the arsenal it needs to satisfy the palate and seduce the senses.

Inky and thatch-like, the stout basically crawls out of the bottle all by itself, then nestles patiently in the snifter, slowly releasing a thick barrier of meringue-like foam. Rediculous aromatics engulf the senses with with lavish espresso, dark chocolate, bourbon and burnt cream- all seemingly of roasted marshmallow with a not-so-subtle kiss of booze.

The sweet density of maple and black-strap molasses swiftly overcome the palate in all of their roasted glory, inviting bold espresso, bittersweet and baker's chocolate, burnt toast and a light waft of campfire. The bourbon flavors carry the spiciness of booze and brashly trample the late palate. In steps vanilla and cream to soften the brunt of alcohol and to give life to the supple complexity of caramel, coconut, cherry and oak from the bourbon barrels.

Absurdly full, its a shame that they don't serve the beer with a spoon. Its pudding-like texture carries a bitter chocolate that's laced with tar-like walnut oil, coffee-derived bitterness, and a sharp charred wood bite. An indefinite linger of bitter chocolate and espresso carry the finish well into the next savory, sultry, outlandish sip.

Loved this beer. Had it on tap at the brewery. Likely my favorite stout. Awesome coffee, bourbon, and chocolate notes. Somehow tasted even better than it smelled.

Thinner than I had hoped, coffee was non-existant in flavor, chocolate was barely discernible, no vanilla at all. Mostly the bourbon stood out, without much wood character I might add. Tastes sort of like they poured a shot of bourbon in an imperial stout.

Pours black with nice lacing. Vanilla and coffee forward. Taste is very much the same, with a good boozy flavor. Nice feeling beer that I would drink any time it was available.

Tweak with a touch of sweetness. It's boozy. It's rich. The coffee is still here, but it's much milder. The added vanilla and cocoa give this an added sweetness, a little more thickness to the mouthfeel. It's delicious.

Smells of bourbon and vanilla with hint of chocolate. Pours with a good head of light brown. The beer is a beautiful color while pouring. Tastes of coffee on the front with chocolate, then vanilla and bourbon. Simply the best Avery beer I've ever had.

Bottle dated 04/25/16.
Pours opaque black. A half-inch tan head forms and settles to a ring on top and leaves spots of lace. The smell is of cocoa, vanilla, oak and dark fruit. The taste follows with cocoa, dark fruit, oak and vanilla. Coffee presence is minimal. Booze is noticeable but, nowhere near what might be expected from a 17.4% sipper. Full syrupy texture.
