Notes / Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

This is a fantastic DIPA. Looks gorgeous out of the glass. I do wish it had just a bit more bite or bitterness from the hops but the malt is all around fantastic. I think it's only a few weeks old - I'd think that's fresh enough but maybe some of the brighter notes already faded. Still, great DIPA I'd definitely have again. It's a lot less expensive than most of their offerings which is nice too.

Really enjoyed this one, nice cloudy copper color with a light tan head. Good balance between sweet & bitter. Over 10%, but went down nice and smooth. Great stuff, will purchase again for sure.

Easily one of the most balanced DIPA's I've ever had.

There is a nice, pineapple sweetness that pushes against the bitter hops and creates a truly fantastic beer.

The aroma is pure pineapple juice with some piney undertones.

The alcohol is absolutely present, but by no means overpowering. I was shocked when I saw this was 10.2% Abv. It drinks like a regular IPA. Very smooth and moderate in carbonation.

For $9 I would absolutely buy a bomber of this again.

I'm not the hop expert but this is "tropical" and "bitter/onion/garlic" hops combined. My saliva 5 minuets after drinking this tastes better than half the beers I drink. There is a great extra long taste cycle from the first thing you taste to the last.
Maybe the best xIPA for me this year. Avery goes back to the top of the brands after the disappointing or misunderstood Kaiser release a few months ago knocked them down for me.
Thanks Avery guys. This compares to the most savory stuff I can concoct on the grill. Can't give anything a perfect cuz I know it is something still out there , ya'll are probably drinking it now.

Stopped in Saturday afternoon after hiking for a week in RMNP. Was very surprised by the quality of this DIPA. Compares very favorably to Bells Hopslam, the beer in this style I am most familiar with. Though not as intense or pleasant a nose as Hopslam, and slightly less sweet, it was nearly as good in every other way. Damn fine brew here. My compliments to ABC. Solid job!!

Wow…very tropical in both smell and taste, but that MALTY SWEETNESS!!! It hits your palate hard!! Such sweet, malty goodness combined with a noticeable booziness makes it a very good DIPA!!

Fruity, but not overpowering fruit. Hoppy but with the malt, it brings down the hops, but not enough to take away the fine hop flavor. I enjoyed this brew at the new Avery Brewery building, and the freshness was quite nice.

Appearance - 4/5
The head is frothy and semi translucent white in color, approximately two fingers thick and dissipated after a while. Nice lacing affect left behind in the glass as the beer disappears. This brew is slightly hazy and is a rich orange/ amber ray of sunshine.

Smell - 4/5
Avery’s offering is definitely a Hop-fest for the nose paired with a sweet fruity/citrus aroma. The malts and hops are ever present and in your face as the brewer intended.

Taste - 4.5/5
This DIPA incorporates smooth malt flavors with the backdrop of a perfect balance between bitterness and sweet. The Hops are true to form for a DIPA. The citrus/grapefruit flavors are distinct and help to mask the taste of alcohol.

Mouth Feel - 4/5
The Maharaja is a medium-bodied offering that is smooth, well balanced, unrestrained and very appealing to the palate. The carbonation is noticeable and tingles the tongue just the correct amount.

Overall - 4.25/5
I really enjoy American DIPA’s and look forward to trying anything in this style that is new to me. Avery has produced an excellent American Double India Pale Ale in my opinion which is worthy of the accolades it receives. The complex flavors are vivid, the alcohol is hidden well and the mouth feel is robust resulting in a solid offering from beginning to end. This brew is similar to Stone Brewery’s Ruination.

Bright orange to copper, like a sunburst. coats beautifully. immediate hop punch, followed by pine and citrus. smooth taste with bananna, grapefruit, and orange peel. fruit and malts balance the potent hops quite nicely making this very drinkable. alcohol becomes slightly present as it warms. great brew

Glad I finally got to try this. Overall very solid. Sweet and fruity aroma - mostly grapefruit and pineapple. Pleasant bitterness and a bit of a boozy bite on the backend but nothing off-putting.

Batch 21, Jan 2015. Amber in color, slight off white foam head that lasted the whole time. Nothing much in the way of lacing though. Aroma was of hops, grass, and lots of pine. Taste is very heavy on the malts, pine, and quite big of hops. Pretty full bodied in nature with some bitterness bite on the finish. Really great, malt forward, semi-sweet DIPA that did not disappoint!

I pick up mango, and a slight grapefruit taste. There is a fruit, and a sweetness that I can't figure out, and it helped the feel and taste. I liked the unknown character that I couldn't pin point. This was a bit malty for me, but it didn't take over this beer completely.

It's a good double ipa. But not as good as the scores it gets. Glad I was able to try it. Pretty balanced beer. I grabbed some off Flavors on it. Like olive on the nose?

Good color and head. Smell and taste are quite boozy, but overall pretty good. I'd put it below Shipyard XXXX and 90 min but above Green Flash/Ballast point varieties.

In the big world of DIPAs, The Maharaja reigns supreme. One of the first IPAs I fell in love with, and it still holds up as the best after having tried Pliny, Heady Topper, Hopslam and all the big dogs.

From its near Crimson hue to a perfect mouthfeel and hop/malt balance, it is as well-crafted a beer for the style on Planet Earth. Yes, I like it, especially as ridiculously fresh as it is right now. Thank you Avery.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a HF snifter/wine glass. Pours a dark, rusty auburn color with about a one finger head. Laces well, and there is an abundance of sediment floating around in there. The bottle has been sitting in my fridge for about 3-4 weeks. Medicinal smell, some alcohol in the nose. Taste is sweet, caramel like. This is a malty imperial IPA, alcohol is present in the taste but not overwhelming. This one is a sipper.

1 pint 6 oz bottle poured into an IPA glass (labelled "RELEASE No. 21 JAN 2015"). Slightly hazy, orange amber; good frothy head of off white foam and nice lacing. Full nose and flavor; plenty of malt body, grains and caramel without being too sweet; layers of hops - grapefruit rind, herbs, resin, tobacco, earth and slight sweeter fruit. A bit more than medium body with moderate carbonation. Balanced, full and all round enjoyable.

Bomber poured into shaker pint and shared with Tim K. Orange and clear body with an off-white head that sticks and leaves lace patches. Aroma is citrus (mostly grapefruit), tobacco, honey, and caramel malt. Taste is moderately bitter with a touch of malty sweetness, centered around grapefruit peel, pine, hop resin, and caramel. Medium body, slightly creamy texture, average carbonation, bitter finish with a hint of alcohol.

Little to no head. Dark unfiltered look. Smell really malty, sort of like hopageddon. This initial taste is very crisp with a subtle bite to the cheeks. Afterwards, very malty with some hop taste. Also, they did a great job in hiding the 10%

Poured into a Dogfish Head IPA glass.

A - 4.5 - Pours a deep caramel orange color. Massive head potential for the ABV being so high. Formed a three finger head of slightly off-white, dense head. Really awesome head retention and lacing.
S - 4.5 - Pineapple, oranges, caramel, grapefruit, hops and a light touch of malt.
T - 4.75 - Upfront there is a really unique taste that sets this one apart as a unique DIPA for me. Similar to the candy, there is a sweet-tart type tartness upfront, which fades into a light maltiness and ends on a hoppy bitter tone. Perfectly executed flavor development. The tartness upfront is very tasty, the maltiness softens the blow so to speak into the bitter, hoppy ending. Very well balanced, especially for it being an imperial.
F - 4.75 - Oily and creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied.
O - 4.5 - This is a really great imperial IPA and the tartness of the taste is something unique and will drink a little off the beaten path and be something different for the seasoned IPA drinker. Well worth trying for fans of the style and you cant beat 7 bucks for a bomber!

Appearance: Poured a clear amber color, nice two finger fluffy white head, great retention and lacing.
Smell: Great tropical and citrus aromas, lots of pineapple, mango and grapefruit with some light sweet malt aromas.
Taste: Some very nice mango and grapefruit flavors, with a very nice sweet malt backbone, very tasty!
Mouthfeel: Medium to heavy bodied, nice creamy finish.
Overall: Such a tasty beer, fantastic when it's fresh. Ranks right up there with some of the best DIPAs.

Pours a dark orange color with a one finger foamy head. It has a deep, earthy flavor to the hops, almost like a British ipa. There is also a good amount of pineapple and mango. Green apple and a sweet, bready malt. The flavor is intensely malty, but it has enough bitterness to support it. The mouthfeel is nice and creamy. Overall, this is a top notch ipa, however, i would enjoy a little more intensity in the hop department.

Thick aftertaste with bitter mouth feel.
Very good IPA.

Growler purchased from local Heinen's grocery store for $15.99/64oz.

Orange-ruby elixir into DFH chalice. One finger, slight off-white head, dissipates to rim. Thick lacing from top to bottom.

Nice aroma of tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, gf) plus some nice pine from the simcoe. There is a bit of malt biscuit which leaks through.

Smooth hop bitterness, tropical fruits, a bit more pine than the nose. The malt sweetness really comes through and knocks back the hops.

Medium to heavy body, a bit of an alcohol feel mid swallow.

Overall an above average DIPA, but no where near the big boys. Too much malt which is what Avery is shooting for, a "balanced" DIPA.

Slick, almost oil mouth feel, the hops flavor is not as heavy as I anticipated for a dipa, very mellowed out by a wave of malty bread flavor on the back end. Nice mix of flavors, great balance.
