Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

1pt 6oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Release no.17 2013.

A - Big pillowy light tan head, tight bubbles. Excellent clarity inside its copper color. Good lacing.

S - Tropical; pineapple, melon. Citrus; sweet tangerine. Catty/dank presence (more as it warms up).

T - Great level of toasty malt holds a perfect backbone. Huge hop flavor has a citrus and somewhat herbal/spicy feel. Hops lend a wallop of bitterness but are very smooth. Finishes with warming alcohol alongside moderate lasting hop flavor.

M - Shows some sweetness in the taste but goes pretty dry at the finish. Medium-full bodied, less than moderate carbonation.

O - Wow, quite impressed by this brew. Looks perfect and smells just as good. Hop aroma far exceeds the typical DIPA and is unique and complex. Flavor is right there with malt striking a good balance. Full bodied for the style and overall excellent mouthfeel. Much thanks goes to Chugalug06 for sending me the best DIPA I've had to date.

Nose: Caramelly and fruity. A little raisin that gives way to citrus and dank, damp green grass.

Appearance: Clear copper, big sticky off-white head. Laces like crazy. Gorgeous.

Taste: Big, sweet and juicy. Strawberry preserves and toffee quickly followed by a cavalcade of hops. Piny, resinous and mildly astringent and slightly drying. A hint of alcohol taste, but no real burn.

Overall: This big boy is quite good. Not mind-blowing - but a nice, sweet Double IPA that drinks huge.

I've seen this beer before on beer store shelvies like at the beer store in sepa but where always past thier prime. Not gonna spend big bucks on stale beer, so when I seen this at the Blue Dog I jumped on it.
Maharaja has flavor most DIPA's are bitter.
This brew has burnished orange amber color with a long lasting head due to it fine attenuation.
Very aromaatic with a hop bouquet thats fresh smelling with flavors of the tropics. the malt bill counter nicely also.
First sip is all hops with candied fruits like pineapple and apricots. One can slao taste some piney resin if you dig deep. There is also some malty biscuits in there too. Then along came Sally to punch you in the face with nuckles full of bitterness.
Drinks surprising smooth and dry. Bitter ending into the aftertaste.
An excellent beer but not for the faint of heart.
