Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

A - dark orangish amber; half of an inch of soft, white, dense head; great retention

S - grapefruit, citrus, intense bready malt

T - bread, birthday cake, grapefruit, citrus, pineapple, heavy bitter finish, a bit piny

M - smooth, perfectly carbonated, medium bodied

This beer has great flavor. There is great balance between the malt and hop characters. It's high ABV makes it a sipper, but the alcohol is well covered making this dangerously drinkable. I will definitely have this again.

Poured from a 22oz bottle with a bottled on Julian date of 12013 (i.e. January 13, 2012) into Riedel Tulip glass.

A- Pours a a very hazy copper/red-orange color and a titanic 3+ finger, off-white, sea foam-like head with soldier-like retention and really nice lacing.

S- Initially, waves of pineapple! As the head (finally) subsides I get more orange citrus, sweet tropical fruit (mango/papaya) as well as some residual malt sweetness.

T- Sweet malt followed by citrus rind on the mid-palate and finishing with a pine-like tackiness. Insanely drinkable considering the 10% ABV.

O- Although I know did not acquire the freshest bottle, I'm very happy to have had a chance to sample and review this highly regarded beer. Although the hype is well deserved (this is one damn good hop lovers dream), there are other examples in the market that are just as delectable on the palate. If you can get, get it...but don't get into a fight to acquire one.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter. Spring 2012 vintage.

A- Pours a dark amber/ orange color with a finger and a half worth of white foamy head. As the head fades I get lots of sticky lacing to the sides of the glass.

S- All hops; lots of citrus notes seem to dominate the aroma, and I also get hints of grapefruit.

T- This is one hoppy beer. Up front I get lots of grapefruit and citrus, with hints of pine resins as well. Hop presence finishes with a nice malt backbone.

M- Bitter, medium bodied, dry finish. Drinks easy for a higher ABV beer.

This is not the first time I've had Maharaja, but the first I'm taking the time out to review. Maharaja is an awesome, juicy DIPA and something I always grab a few bottles of when released.

Appearance: Dark amber in color with a creamy head that slowly recedes leaving behind some good lacing.

Smell: Well balanced aroma for a DIPA. The hops have a floral aroma with a citrus background. Not overpowering but very inviting.

Taste: Lots of complexity and balance. Sweet malty base with lots of floral and citrus flavors from the hops. Hints of honey and almost a quad sort of kick to it. Great.

Mouthfeel: Heavier body works with a nice amount of carbonation.

Overall: Very good beer with amazing balance and complexity. Definitely worth buying again.
