Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

Pours reddish brown. Head is a finger thick.Nose of sweet malt and tangerines. Taste is sweet with a sharp whip of it's 10%ABV making itself present.Mouth feel is quite pleasant, softly velvet on the palate. Medium dry finish. Overall it is a pretty good brew to sip on.

A - Dark orange, mostly clear slightly hazy body, thin off white head, lots of fine dot lacing.

S - Pine, resin, orange zest, a hint of vanilla, a bit of malty dough.

T - Lovely open of bubble gum, with hop notes of orange zest, pith, and mint, a middle reveals a nice malt core, delivering a dinner roll hit, slight buttery note, but nothing offensive, and a bitter but not harsh close. Delicious.

M - Sticky open, brisk middle, dry close. Alcohol is well cloaked, and this is superbly drinkable for the ABV and heavy hopping.

O - Superb. A big, bold, full IPA experience, with a big malt core. Not a boozy mess, this is a refined, carefully constructed beer that delivers on all fronts. Impressive.

Jewel tone Amber, nice head, lots of lacing, smell of hops and over-ripe cantaloupe, taste follows with a little caramel to balance the hops. Alcohol packs a punch, a beer to be shared.

Twelve ounce can poured hard into a straight thin wall glass. Beautiful color with amber, orange and copper tones. One finger head that dissipates fairly quickly but leave a heavy rim with beautiful lacing. This brew is spicy on the nose with hints of fruit and pineapple. The taste pretty well follows the nose. Surprising smooth flavor for an Imperial IPA. Boat loads of hops followed quickly by tons of malt. Great combo. Not at all boozy considering its high ABV. A little ripe grapefruit along with pineapple hops to even things out. A great IPA. Some as good but few are better.

Pours a hazy golden/orange color and leaves the same color body with a thin somewhat foamy head that concaves to a nice looking valley in the center of the glass, some carbonation is seen rising. The aroma is malty resinous caramel bitterness; the taste is bitter yet sweet at different times just like "old DIPA’s" tend to get, still comes through in a good way, nothing bad, sticky resinous aftertaste; dry sticky finish; on the palate it sits fairly well and has a nice smoothness to it (I did get an old bottle); overall, this is a good DIPA for the most part.

Pours a beautiful West Coast sunset with a long lasting beige head.
There are so many more aromas in this IPA its hard to identify each single element. I get the typical resind, grapefruit pine scent, but I am also getting a layer of wet leaves, not in a bad way though.
The first taste was a bit too much for me. Guess I wasnt ready for the fullness along with the Rich flavors and still drinkable at a high IBU rate.
The second and third tastes were MUCH better. I like the fullness of this beer. Almost like a barley wine. But still that aroma is still a bit intense. The actual taste is not as strong as the aroma.
This is one to share with some good beer buddies

Wow these IBUs are Very in your face. The ABV is also not very well hidden. Overall big and malty and chewy and not very enjoyable. Also no notable smell. Will not try again.

Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. The appearance is a mild hazy light amber-color with some orange highlights. The head is a medium sized off-white color. The aroma is mostly grapefruit with some earthy notes tossed in. The taste is similar to the nose.

I'm a little late in the game to finally getting to this beer 12 years after it was introduced. I think I had it once but not in a setting to do a review. Anyway. thanks y. bro for this fine sample.
A boy beer out of a can. Who knew? Pours heavy with a huge head and dark syrupy gold. The head stays around for the whole drink with a tan show of sticky foamy goodness. Tops off with tons of hops. Heavy hop liqueur aroma that pushes limits without passing to the excess stage.
Drinks big and full as well but what a drink. Rich malt dances with the fullness of the hops. Bitter, but not really with sweetness of the malt and heaviness of the feels keeping everything in check. I like the raw, almost rustic taste of the hops.

12 oz can. Big sweet malt met by huge piney hops. Tons of flavor in this brew. Earthy bitter finish. One of the first massive IPAs years ago before everyone was doing it. Still delicious.
