Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Maharaja is derived from the sanskrit words mahat, meaning “great”, and rajan, meaning “king”. Much like its namesake, this imperial IPA is regal, intense and mighty. With hops and malts as his servants, he rules both with a heavy hand. The Maharaja flaunts his authority over a deranged amount of hops: tangy, vibrant and pungent along with an insane amount of malted barley – fashioning a dark amber hue and exquisite malt essence. Welcome to his kingdom!

The Maharaja is the second installment in our Dictator Series.

August 2015 bomber poured into an oversized tulip.

Copper body with frothy pale white head. Scattered lacing. The body is opaque but clean. 4.5

Oooh, that's a nice aroma. Melon and grapefruit are a great combination. Somewhat bubblegum-like from that burst of sweet melon. I love that aroma. 4.25

I love that the melon carries over to the palate. I love that flavor in beer (all Yellow Rose's fault). It's rich, bursting and dessert-like. If you've ever had a melon creamsicle, that's the flavor here. Bubblegum aspects are in there too but eventually give way to resinous grapefruit. The combination of flavors are very enjoyable. 4.25

I wouldn't call this beer boozy, but you'll know you're drinking a monster. The bitterness is pretty intense too and there's a spicy burn from the hop/booze mix, though it's not disagreeable. Plus, the smoothness of the thick malts help to ease things. 4.25

I was really pleased by the melon-heavy fruit nose and flavor. I still am partial to Yellow Rose for being lighter, easier to drink and less harsh/bitter, but for those that insist on a DIPA, this is pretty damn good.

a A deep orange, almost encroaching on copper/amber/red territory, with a little white bubbly head. Pretty decent looking beer
s Nice hoppy nose with a little bit of citrus and sugary malt--not very boozy on the nose.
t A little piney and floral on the front end, but there is a definite undercurrent of citrus that washes in after the initial fast has subsided; this is a pretty well balanced beer, and, considering there is so much alcohol, this is a feat. I appreciate this beer--it is about the ingredients and their expression, rather than the booze or hop smacking. Good stuff.
m Pretty standard in this department
o I respect this beer--I like it when brewers worry more about the fullest expression of their ingredients. And though I respect it more than I enjoy it, I thought this was a fine beer.
