Pours a bit darker than cola, with a thin head which lasts as a cap. Spotty lacing on the way down.

Smells of bourbon, caramel, light coconut.

Tastes of caramel malts, bourbon sweetness. Mild coconut melds with the whole. Not very roasty or bitter. A touch sweet from the alcohol. Smooth and easy to sip.

Overall, a nice change of pace from the typical BA stout.

If there's one way to catch my attention, it's to place "Botanicals & Barrels" on your label. Washed my hair with coconut shampoo now I'm ready for a coconut refreshment! Immediate and loud sweet coconut aroma. Taste is of toasted coconut sugar treats and bourbon. Appearance is liquid black with light colored slightly less than standard lacing. The mouthfeel in my opinion is great, creamy smooth, heavier than medium weight. Overall taste is great, something new, but feels a bit syrupy as you reach the last 1/3 of your glass.

This is a world class stout/porter. The version I tasted is now at 11.4% abv. Not sure when this change was made as there is no date on the bottle that I can find...

The look is nice and dark with a finger of head on the initial pour.

Smell is strong coconut milk, bourbon notes and dark chocolate. Some dark fruit tannins also seep in.

Taste is outstanding. Starts off strong with coconut milk and bourbon complexity. Transitions into an awesome bakers dark chocolate that lingers on the palate. All the while sitting on a great roasted malt body.

Overall, minus the missing date on the bottle, this is one of my favorite stouts. Coming in at $13.00 for the bottle, the quality should be near double the price. Excellent beer, but I wish there was proper dating on the bottle!

650ml bottle, served in a snifter glass. Pours a darker cola brown body, one finger brown head, fair retention and no lacing. Smell is booze, bourbon, touch of toasted coconut, light milk chocolate and more booze. Flavour follows pretty closely to the nose, lots of booze and a touch of coconut and chocolate. Cane sugar and a bit of caramel rounds it out, makes it fairly sweet. Mouthfeel is thin, lighter bodied with fair carbonation. Not particularly interesting or balanced. Not much nuance to this one.

From the growler via Country Fresh Market in Beechmont. This rather nice stout
pours a dark brownish black with cola highlights and a nice light head of off white foam
that subsides to a thick ring, thin light pool, and showcases some nice light lacing. Nose of
toasted coconuts, light vanilla, brown sugars, and notes of boozy bourbon. Flavors are on point
with rich bourbon and light vanilla that mingle with brown sugar and toasted coconut and dark malts
that are lightly kissed by oak. Exceptional mouth feel; medium carbonation that is lively for a barrel aged
brew, medium full body, and a rich sweet bourbon and coconut finish.

Overall excellence from a fantastic brewer. Worthy!

Pours out black and has a fluffy foam head. Hints of vanilla and bourbon notes, Silky and smooth with a nice touch of coconut, not overpowering tho, and some milk chocolate and bourbon and vanilla. Some noticeable alcohol. Medium mouthfeel.

Poured into a wine glass

Appearance: dark brown – certainly not black, with a dark tan head. Even when held directly to sunlight, little light shines through. Head retention is medium, which is what is preventing a score greater than 4.25 in appearance.

Aroma: light coconut; by no means overwhelming and certainly not artificial smelling. The bourbon and oak are present but mild. You know they are there, but they don’t call much attention to themselves.

Flavor: light coconut; more toasted coconut than sweet coconut. The oak and bourbon are present, both in concert with the coconut. Well balanced. No one flavor dominates. Much less sweet than expected. I was expecting a desert-sweet beer like many of the imperial chocolate milk stouts. This beer showcases the coconut, bourbon and oak, but does so well shy of being cloying.

Mouthfeel: light-medium to medium. A bomber is easily a one-person effort.

Overall: This was enjoyable but somewhat understated from what I expected. Very well balanced. This beer is worth trying, but it is the lesser of all of Avery’s Barrels and Botanicals’ offerings sans Tangerine Quad, which I haven’t tried.

Bottle to snifter.

LOOK: thin black, big white head that fades.
AROMA: coconut, rum,bourbon,
TASTE: coconut, malt, bourbon. Touch of some other liqour, like rum, wine, brandy.
FEEL: bubbly upfront, but falls flat. Edoum body.

Good coconut beer, but OB DBC is better even without the barrel aging.

So check this out. My grocery bill has increased by 10-20% each trip. Why? Well, take the best brewery in Colorado, and let's say they expand their barrel program. And they distribute two states over, and you can get their barrel aged 22oz products for $9.99. . . at the grocery store. Yeah, I buy at least one bottle now every time I go.

The beer itself pours as a porter/stout would be expected: black, thick, mild tan head 1/3". Aroma is sweet. Bourbon isn't huge on this one. Leans more sugar, coconut, then barrel and roast in a smallish way. Taste is really good, hides alcohol, good carbonation leads to an easy not sludgy I need to have only 1oz pour body. The sugaryness is more than expected but not dessert beer territory. Caramel, vanilla and coconut lessen the base roastiness and even seem to drown out most of the barrel. I presume they also don't age these for a shitload of time either. Quick in the barrel, quick out. Fine by me.

So I dunno, if you want a double barrel bourbon bomb along the lines of Black Gold, move along. But, otherwise, this is a fantastic value in the beer world, pretty much only second to Lagunitas High Westified.

Cool beer from Avery. Tipped my tulip to Love Songs by the Beatles with my baby. A mellow brown, almost magenta-tinged beer with a slightly syrup-like consistency.

Smells of mahogany, coconuts, a little booze, and raisins. Thin mouthfeel with a molasses-like taste/feel in a way. Goes down smooth with a little bit of the barrel aged booziness sitting in the back of the pallet.

Overall a truly underrated, unique beer that I am very glad for having sampled. Half of a bottle surely set the mood.

Much love to all you fellow beer lovers too.
