Copious quantities of coconut coupled with time basking in bourbon barrels complement the chocolaty and sumptuous nature of this delectable porter.

Bomber received as gift. Near black pour, soft beige head, streaky lacing. Aroma sarts with the coconut which then merges with some nice chocolaty roast. Taste continues the Mounds vibe, and adding a nice glow from the alcohol. This is one pleasant beer from start to finish.

I've seen and heard the rave reviews. I would have to say the coconut was there--just enough, nicely blended. The deep brown pour had medium body, and the fat part of the bottle was tasty, not incredibly complex, but smooth. Oddly, the first sip and the last few sips were boozy, tainting my overall opinion. Was the beer mishandled? Possibly. Definitely a beer I'd like to revisit.

not only is this beer impressive, but the concept of having a barrel aged beer like this on the shelf full time at a fair price was well ahead of its time. this is packed with coconut, has enough bourbon to it without being overwhelming, and is full flavored without being too sweet or forced, delicious, exactly what i would expect from avery in a beer like this. it kind of smells and tastes like a mounds bar, a definite chocolate character in the mix from the grain, which is less roasty, coffee forward, and bitter than i thought it might be based on the color here. some milk chocolate sweetness, dark chocolate earthiness, and evident barrel char give it a desserty character without making it too decadent to drink. a little alcohol in the nose isnt really there in the flavor until it warms up quite a bit, and the woodiness keeps this smooth the whole time. its mature but the coconut is fresh, and the whiskey compliments it well, almost rum as much as bourbon to me, the power of suggestion of the coconut here making it kind of tropical and islandy on my palate. a toasted vibe to the coconut as well as raw flesh, not sure how they did this, but its more complete than in a lot of these. fuller bodied but not overly viscous, and honestly, i could do a whole bomber of this to myself pretty easily, which is rare for this sort of thing. impressive quality and complexity here from avery, this is one of the things they do best, and im glad to have finally gotten around to trying this one, its among my favorites of their full time brews! as good as any barrel aged coconut dark beer out there for my money.

Sampled from 22 oz bomber into pint glass. A 1" tan head drops slowly with moderate lacing. Color is deep reddish brown. Rich aroma of coconut, bourbon, cocoa, dark roasted malt, earthy hops. Mouthfeel is heavy and viscous with a warming alcohol finish. Flavor of cocoa, dark roasted malt, raisin, plum, bourbon, the coconut is more subdued in the taste than the aroma. Overall: very good to excellent.

L: Pours a dark brown black with a small tan head and no lacing on the glass.

S: Very strong notes of bourbon, including vanilla and cherry, slight roasted chocolate and malt, but mostly bourbon. Coconut is barely there.

T: Strong bourbon, including vanilla, oak and cherry, some slightly roasted malt and chocolate, a touch of coconut. Bourbon overwhelms everything else.

F: Medium to big body, slick cola like carbonation.

O: The bourbon in this beer overwhelms the rest of the beer.

Its impressive dark opaque color with a light to medium tan head looks spectacular. The smell of bourbon overpowers all else, so not very promising to the nose. A medium amount of carbonation and an ideally rich, but not heavy feel gives this porter a near perfect feel.

You can detect the bourbon less in the taste, but it's still there. The roasty malt shines brightest along side a hint of dark chocolate. I was disappointed the coconut wasn't more prevelant. I could barely tell it was there. Yet overall, it was still good.

Bottom line: at $15/bottle I had my hear set on a more noticable coconut flavor. If this were $7/pint, I'd give it a much higher score and call it one of the best porters I've tried.

22oz bottle. Stamped bottling date is '03/13/17'.
Opaque, cola dark brown colored body. Small finger width of beige head, which stays around as an interrupted cap with lots of rising bubble action, and a ring. Leaves behind good evidence of lacing.
Aroma of dark chocolate, coconut, and bourbon barrel.
Taste of roasted malts that express chocolate, with dried flake coconut, and the bourbon barrel that includes vanilla.
Thin to medium mouth feel. Rather smooth and with a little mouth coating. Good carbonation.
Natural tasting coconut adds a flavorful note to this dark porter, aged in the barrel.
