Had on tap at Public Eat and Drink in North Adams, MA. Slow night with soft techno playing, which oddly enough works well with a brown ale while typing a review on a laptop.

Appearance- An attractive very dark brown. Around the edges where the liquid is not so thick, it appears more rusty in hue, which I liked quite a bit. Lacing around the rim that sticks around throughout the pint.

Smell- I agree with several other reviewers in that it is very pleasant on the nose--dark chocolate and Columbian coffee to me--but some said that the smell is more subtle than they'd like. I get plenty for this style, especially if you sip and swirl a bit, giving it time to warm up. That might make you look like a wine snob, but it is a good experience to take some time and sniff away, particularly on this one.

Taste- Delicious for the style and consistent with the smell. Maybe some dark cherries in there too. A very nice tart zing in the finish.

Mouthfeel- Not getting so much carbonation as others, at least from the tap tonight. Doesn't coat your mouth like some other nice brown ales I've had--this one mostly stops after swallowing--but still very pleasant.

Overall, I'd say Ellie's is the best brown I've had, and I'd also say that those who like the traditional brown ale style will really dig this one. Cheers.
