Pours brown. Not opaque, not entirely clear. You sure can't see through the glass, that's for sure! Smallish tan head with very tight bubbles and good lasting power. Smells like Eku 28 tastes - thick, sweet caramel. And, whoa, it actually tastes like thick, sweet caramel. There is a bit of astringency to the caramel - just a twinge at the back of the mouth as you swallow. The feel is ... different. Odd. It's thick and creamy and all, but seems like there's a lot of carbonation in it. Only the bubbles are tiny. Does that make sense? I mean, like, wow, I like it, but I think that it could be a little better without the bite to it (astringency?) and with a slightly thinner body with less carbonation.

Listed as a weizen Doppelbock on label,poured into an Aventinus glass a brilliant russett brown with a fluffy light brownish colored head that settled nicely into a creamy-like mass.Really like the nuances in the aromas in one way the slight clovey and banana notes show the weizen notes and the caramel,mollases,and semisweet chocolate character is becoming of a good doppelbock I enjoyed the nose of this one alot.Flavors mingle very well starts out somewhat doughy and sweet with notes of brown sugar and and caramel with clovey flavors melding into a peppery/spicey finish.This beer has real character and complexities and is well rounded.a great beer to be had.

Appearance – This one came out of the goat-labeled bottle a dingy brown in color with little head.

Smell – The rich malts and stiff booze don’t exactly “take me back” to my days of drinking DBs in Bavaria, but it’s big in typical Avery fashion so, OK, I can admit that I like it. There’s some brown sugar to the aroma as well and a pruny smell to go with it.

Taste – The big malts from the nose are just one chord in this wild guitar riff. The light sugars that I smelled earlier just explode at the taste. It’s almost like a Quadrupelbock or something.

The alcohol is huge. I’m not used to such a big booze flavor in my DB. It takes away from the bockish malts. This is tasty and I am enjoying drinking it though.

Mouthfeel – This is a big medium-bodied with a sharp alcohol sting.

Drinkability – Well, I don’t know if I’m down for a kegger of this stuff, and if you’re looking for a traditional Doppelbock this is definitely NOT a wise choice, but it was fun and went well with my spicy Mexican meal while I caught up on missed Contender episodes.

Review from Inaugural Issue of Beeradvocate Magazine.

Created to celebrate Avery's 13th year of brewing, bottled in May 2006.

Pours a nearly opaque brown brew, with slight ruby highlights showing when held up to the light. Nice tan-beige, foamy head. Great retention as it shows some stickage on the glass. Powdery husk and a faint, empty milk carton smell, though more like coffee milk. Spicy phenols, alcohol and a beet-like aroma as well. Full-bodied, smooth and juicy. Flash of ripe citrus up front. Spicy, alcoholic heat, prickly and peppery. Maltiness goes from thin molasses, to coffee grinds, to chicory. Rosewater from the alcohol. Growing phenolic flavors peak in the middle and diminish quickly. Semi-dry with a pronounced alcoholic finish. Way too phenolic and messy for us, with some uncontrolled heat going on for the style. Too bad, as we love the style and Avery beers in general.

22oz bomber. Pours into my glass a clear cola brown with a quarter inch of khaki head on top of the brew. Hints of red pop out as well. Aromas of roasted malts, toffee and cocoa upfront with fruity accents in the background. Spicy, yeasty notes pop out along with a dense dark bread aspect as well.

First sip brings a roasted, toasty rich dark bread malt upfront that has notes of toffee and chocolate as well. Lots of fruit flavors fly around in this one. It flows down with spicy, yeasty characteristics and it finishes off with a good hit of fusel alcohol. Quite a bit of sweetness throughout too. This is a big, brash weizenbock.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and a bit bracing with lots of carbonation. Goes down pretty easily overall, but the sweetness and alcohol make it a bit less than drinkable for me. I was glad to be able to sample it but also glad I only picked up one bottle.

Haven't reviewed in a little while...been busy I guess you could say...just wanted to sit down with a nice 'big' brew tonight and take it easy...

Clear body with a dark ruby and garnet color when held to the light. Head is light tan, started one inch thick and reduced to a dense quarter inch cap. Grips the glass really well. Looks really nice.

Aroma is filled with bananas to me with some bready character that reminds me of banana pudding for some reason. Sweet dark fruits come through, grape and a touch of plums possibly. A bit of clove like spice to round it out. Hints of alcohol pervade the senses too. Again, pretty nice.

Flavor is much weaker than the aroma. More darker fruits and alcohol in this with less of the banana. Spices change from clove to more of a peppery finish. Good, but not nearly as complex. Alcohol comes through.

Mouthfeel is thinner than I would have liked. I expect a fuller feel in this style with a bit of creaminess. Finishes a bit dry too.

Okay drinkability. The aroma is really attractive but the flavor fails to live up. Couple that with a thinnish mouthfeel and it falls a bit short.

Pours a very dark carmel, almost straight brown. Little to no head, but carbonation present.

Smells deep malty carmel. Wow, what a malt. Rum raisin, maybe plum, but its very deep and very good. Im excited!

Deep malt, like maple syrup. Some interesting bitter in there, not sure what sort of hop character. Very rum'y, outstanding. Fairly hot in the finish, but tough to notice.

Maybe a little hot, but overall very very good. Carb level was done exceptional for the style. The malt character hides most of the heat.

I dont really want to take away from this, but the brew is almost a meal. I dont want much else to go with it and finishing a 750 by myself is a lot of work.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with red highlights. It has a bubbly light tan head that quickly goes down to a thin collar that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is grainy malt with some sweet sugary fruits, big bananas, and a little clove.

The flavor is sugary sweetness (not as bad as the Samael or Meph though) with some fruitiness and chocolate. The finish is subtle noble hops and some almost tart alcohol. As it warms, it improves - the sweetness subdues and more malt complexity comes out - chocolate, toffee, caramel, and nuts. The mouthfeel is pretty full and smooth on the carbonation.

I usually haven't cared a lot for Avery's bigger beers, so I was hesitant to try this. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a little sweet, but it is pretty well balanced and the alcohol is fairly well hidden (though it definitely warms the belly!). As it warmed and I drank more, I liked it better and better. I think it's too sweet for a true weizenbock though.

I'm usually a big fan of Avery's adventures in big beers, but this one just didn't work for me. Pours a mostly clear, dark mahogany body with a small beige head. Retention is fair and some scarce patchy lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma is intriguing. Notes of malty chocolate, dark fruits(raisin), a hint of caramel, wheaty notes of clove and banana, and a whiff of fusel alcohol.

Mouthfeel has a solid medium body, low carbonation, and a slightly fusel presence.

Taste has lots of roasty chocolate, accented by clove and green banana. Odd. Hints of raisins and maple syrup. Some hot alcohol here. Finishes dry and bitter.

The components simply don't seem well integrated. Tastes like a Hefe and Doppelbock mixed together in a glass. The fusel alcohol gets in the way, as well. Maybe, this one needs to sit in the cellar for awhile.

Avery bomber, with a gold foil, metallic label and cap, "Brewed in 2006" Pours dark, murky mahogony, with a dark tan head, leaving blotchy lacing. Nose here is of rum, bananas and whole wheat bread. This is a bold and brash, complex brew. Alot going on here. Body/mouthfeel is full, rich and thick. Flavor notes of more raisins, bready malts, bananas, and rum. Not for the faint of heart or for BA worthy beer beginners. This would probably go well with some big and bold German style food or with some cheese and cured meats. For me this is a cold winter evening, night capper style beer, a glass or two and you should be sleeping very well.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. Didn't think I would get to try this one nearly five years after it was released.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a brown head. The aroma is heavy on the toffee and caramel malt notes, with a little bit of wheat mixed in as well.

The flavor has a lot of toffee, wheat and caramel. I also get quite a bit of brown sugar, making the beer fairly sweet. The alcohol is very well hidden for a beer of this strength.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Clear, dark brown pour with a firm tan head. Aroma of toasted bread, wheat, and darker fruit. Taste is initially light, then grows stronger towards the back. Nice balance of yeast esters and the wheat up front that turns into a roasted malt and caramel sweetness. Almost schizophrenic in its taste. Very clean and very good.

This beer held up extrodinarily well for its age. Smell and taste has a raisin sweetness to it, which is a personal favorie of mine. The very tail end of the taste shows its age.

From a bomber with silver foil and graced by a goat, into a half-liter Schneider Weisse glass, it pours a dark amber, with mahogany undertones at the bottom or when held to the light. The head is three-fingers of very creamy beige, little pockets of foam remain as it slowly dissipates--lots of sticky lace. Beautiful.

The nose offers a very malty character accompanied by blackberry and plum, and is then ultimately dominated by spice--clove, cinnamon, and pepper--I almost expect to sneeze.

The flavor is full of dark berries, plum, caramel malt, candy, a hint of smokiness, not as much spice as the nose would forcast, though pepper is quite noticeable on the finish, and a strong alcohol presence. It's very fruity and sweet.

The mouth is medium-bodied, complex, and finishes dry, but if followed by syrup sticky on the lips.The alcohol can be felt, but it dances along the platate lively enough to make it very drinkable. This would pair nicely with some smokey food. Damn good.

Wow, this is a very tasty beverage. It pours a nice dark carmel color, with a moderate head (being generous here) which does not last more than a brief moment. The smell is a very pleasant mixture of sweet malt with barely a hint of hops. The taste is complex (at least for me), with a sweet coffee flavoring being the primary tatse. A smooth mouthfeel. No hint of alcohol (but it is there). A nicely drinakable, albeit potent brew. Definitely seek out this beer, I regret not buying more when I had the opportunity.

On tap at the Muddy Pig, St. Paul, MN...

Dark black appearance, essentially opaque with a glistening tan head that settles at 1/4 of an inch in height for about a minute. Laces in thin horizontal strings. Smokey aroma, bitterish oily backdrop. Mouthfeel is full with low silky carbonation. In contrast to the smell, the flavor is quite sweet to start off, dark chocolate and flesh fruits, with a decided bubblegum backdrop that doesn't seem subtle and certainly seems to indicate an estery Wiezenbock heritage. Finishes with some extra fruit tones but an un-subtle gasoline afterburn that comes off as a little too obvious. Other than the very dark color, this beer doesn't seem so mysterious, its an Avery amped-up boozy version of a style that has plenty of things going for it without the heat.

A- This beer has a dark opaque body with a nice brown hue where the glass narrows enough to let light through. There is a thick creamy tan head that last for the whole beer.

S- The smell of dark coffee malt with a soft banana quality has a faint brown sugar hint that is more like bourbon but not quite. There is a faint spicy alcohol smell in the finish.

T- The taste of dark malt is very vinous with notes of dark toffee and dry prunes with a faint bread and banana notes. There is a faint lighter fruity note in the finish with some soft alcohol bite and a dark roasted malt bite. As it warms there is a pumpernickel bitterness to the finish.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a faint alcohol finish.

D- This beer is an interesting beer and it taste like what I would expect a good Weizen and Dopplebock to taste like but it was just not my favorite flavors.

22oz. brown bomber, purchased at Hyde Park Wine and Spirits, poured into an imperial pint.

A: Pours a deep brown with a bit of visibility. About a finger worth of rocky light khaki head. Decent retention and good lacing.

S: Dark, caramelly fruits. Some deep wheaty notes as well as a touch of alcohol. Some spicy yeast. On the subtle side.

T/M: Yeow, just as the description says... a powerful dunkel weisse, doppelbock strength. Dark dark wheat and caramelly malts. Some dark fruits mixed with a pleasant, drinkable alcohol. And more of the spicy yeast. Body is medium full and creamy.

D: A big beer that drinks pretty damn easy... nearly as easy as a normal dunkel weisse.

Wow, this is a tough review to make. This beer is so complex there are aromas and flavors I can't even come close to identifying.
Pours deep,almost black, brown with a thick head that melts far too quickly to nothing.
Aroma is sweet toasted malt, caramel, dark fruits, coffee, chocolate...more that is sweet but I can't name.
Taste is initially sweet, sweet malt then all of the aromas convert to flavors...dark fruits (numerous), caramel, coffee, chocolate, no wheat, but lots, lots more.
Aftertaste is sweet without being cloying...but your mouth is filled with flavors and the stay a long long time. Now there is a slight grainy taste in the aftertaste...maybe a little spice...I think I found the wheat.
This beer is very, very complex. And yet somehow it all seems to balance.
I am enjoying this immensely

Avery- 13

Appearance- Dark mahogany brown with a thick creamy head. Heavy lacing on the glass.
Smell- Alcohol, molasses malt, and earthy woodsy hops.
Taste- Molasses followed up by strong burnt oak. Strong alcohol is ever present.
Mouthfeel- Sweet and oily with a strong alcohol burn.

Overall- A decent tasting beer. If the alcohol was toned down this would be more enjoyable.

Had on tap at Mugs Ale House in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Pours a dark, burnt, ruby red color with a thick, white, rocky head.

Smells of alcohol. Sweet malt and grainy, barnyard wheat.

The taste is of strong alcohol and sweet malt and grainy wheat. I didn't know the style of this beer when I first tried it and at first thought it was a barley wine. But the lighter, grainier wheat mouthfeel eventually becomes evident in the mouthfeel.
MF is also of quite strong alcohol but the lighter presence of the wheat makes it a bit more drinkable.

Near opaque black with a white head. Very smooth and tasteful, a fine bitterness and clear German style with some German yeast. Lots of caramel and some chocolate malt but not sweet and gladly not hopped up. Refreshing. A fine piece of craftmanship from Avery.

The first bock in the 3rd Madison Style Session - Weiss is Neiss, courtesy of expatsteve.

Pour: crystal clear garnet/ruby under a finger of capuccino creamy head.

Nose: balsamic vinegar, sour cherry and smoky jerky notes over a whiff of burly wheat.

Taste: kriek lambic cherry sourness, cider vinegar pucker, dark doppelbock malts, and burning brandy booze.

Feel: crisp, slick body, agressive booze makes for a dry finish.

Drinkability/Overall: This is a formidable weizen dopple, perhaps a little too agressive as the booze masks a lot of the more subtle wheat characteristics, though there is still a lot going on. A little age would do this one well.
