Pour is deep ruby red, transparent, with a tan head and fair bit of lacing. Nose is salty and meaty. A bit of berry and malt sweetness, slightly oxidized in back. Taste is more sweet, tinge of alcohol, faint herbal hop. Seems a hint sugary with some brown sugar and caramel lingering. Medium body, soft carbonation, a hint slick.

Aromas of intense malt, super dark fruit, very sweet and candy like, lots of caramel and molasses. The alcohol adds to the sweetness. Dry, floral overtone from the hops.

Flavor is equally malty, but with a harsh bitterness on the end. Way way way too astringent and roasty. The bitterness lingers... not pleasant. Malt is the real star here, just wish that aftertaste wasn't there.

Thick chewy mouthfeel. It has a medium body that is more on the heavier side of medium. Has a little bit of a chewy quality to it. It has a creamy quality to it, and warms the mouth. Not balanced enough to revisit in my opinion, will not revisit.

This is not a "Winter Warmer" according to style guidelines, though I do not doubt that it could warm one up on a cold winters day. This, according to Avery's website, is an English Strong Ale (much more suitable if you ask me). Let's see, what else do they reveal about this beer? They used Bullion hops, which is an interesting choice...mostly a bittering hop. Malts included are 2-row barley, special roast, black, chocolate and victory. THERE ARE NO SPICES ADDED. OG: 1.074 IBU: 30

I served this beer in a standard pint glass. No freshness date on the bottle, though I bought this beer in the fall of 2008.

A: Very nice head! Thick, three fingers worth of soapy, sudsy, cream-colored head. The body was a rich mahogany in color with ruby red highlights when held up to the light. The clarity was good enough so that one could see the moderate stream of carbonation. The lacing was ok, but not good.

S: Served cold, the aromas here are extremely subdued. This beer needs to be warmed up a bit before the aromas come out. It starts off smelling weakly of serious malts...and then, once it is warm enough, becomes a wonderful envelope of different characters. There is a nutty, almond-like malt aroma which is supported by a soft, dank hop smell. Just barely noticeable is the alcohol in the nose. There are interesting fruit notes from the yeast, like mango, ripened blueberries and some banana bread.

T: The flavor profile is lacking. It is mostly covered up by a strong alcohol presence. This may not actually be the case, but the way I end up perceiving the beers flavor is all up front. To make it more clear, it is like taking a drink where everything is normal until you swallow, which is when you realize that you can't taste anything past a certain point in your mouth. The back of your tongue and way back on the roof of your mouth is just craving some sensation, but alas, it gets none. Very frustrating... I am going to blame it on the strong alcohol presence, for the front is where it creates its slow burn sensation, and maybe this is like an illusion of flavor. The bitterness from the hops is minimal and it contributes no perceivable flavor. Mostly, as it warms and as it begins to coat the whole mouth more, I am able to get a better sense for the caramel malt sweetness. Hints of raisins and sweet cherries are in the aftertaste.

M: Full bodied, coating, with a big contribution from the alcohol, which leaves a nice warming burn on the front half of the tongue. There is a good amount of excitable carbonation. I wish that it felt more even though.

D: Not all bad. I would think that aging this beer for several years would help to cool the alcohol down. However, I would never buy a case, or even a six pack of this stuff again. There are just too many beers out there to try and this doesn't make the cut for a repeat performance in my book.

Avery Old Jubilation is sweet, sticky, and smooth.

It poured very dark copper with no head. It left a clear glass. The smell and flavor had strong brown sugar and molasses-like sweetness. There was a slight stinging metallic aftertaste. The ale was smooth and watery, leaving only a sticky feeling on the lips and tongue adding to the similarities between it and licorice-flavored hard candy.

Avery Old Jubilation has the look, flavor, and feel of flat root beer.

Appearance: Dark brown with a red tint. The head is minimal and had poor retention. Just spotty lacing is left on the glass.

Smell: Sweet malt, chocolate, spice, citrus, and alcohol.

Taste: Dominated by the sweet malt. Some spice and hops are noted. Overall the taste is weak. Some alcohol warming is experienced.

Mouthfeel: Seems thin for a winter warmer. Carbonation is low.

Drinkability: A disapointment all around. No need to visit this beer again.

A very aggressive head forms and is as thick as 3+ fingers. Very creamy and excellent retention. A deep ruby/amber color with excellent clarity and no visible carbonation. Clumpy lacing everywhere.

Aroma is a little muddy, earthy, grain like and a hint of cherry.

What's funny (not really) is that the muddy earthy aroma is also front and center to the flavor. Deep malt flavors, a touch of dark fruit. Not quite yeasty, just dirty and earthy. (these are not off flavors.... Perhaps grainy as well.

Lots of A bit grainy and the ABV is present.

Gotta say, glad I only bought one bottle to sample. This will be the last one of these that I have.

Picked this up in a mixed six at Al's of Hampden recently. Poured out a dark ruby brown from the bottle into my Duvel tulip. Modest head with little retention and a bit of lacing evident.

Smell is malty and sweet, not much hops evident but not overwhelming "fruity" either.

Taste is a smoky malt with a bit of chocolate.

Mouthfeel is a bit chewy and thick with minimal carbonation.

Drinkability would be limited on this one for me - one at the end of the evening is ok.

Not my favorite style by far but this is certainly a well made beer.
