Because normal strength beer is so 1990's, Avery Brewing Company pushes the limits of porter with generous additions of cocoanut and an extended rum barrel slumber. Its a beer that's fit for the pirate in all of us.

Plank'd waltzes in with a dark brown color with tawny bronze margins. A its light froth collapses into the glass, its viscosity is apparent even to the eye. Devilish aromas of chocolate, coconut, spiced rum, oak, molasses and light coffee carry a powerful display that tingles the nose and promises a lavish taste. Molasses, sorghum, toffee and caramel all intertwine for a malty sweet taste of sheer decadence with the very first sip.

As the oily sweet porter rolls across the middle palate, its sweetness saturates the tongue with syrupy sweetness while folding in the robust flavors of coffee, chocolate, pecan and toasted oak. Once the rum spices rise to take a slight edge off of the cloying sweetness, it comes with an allspice medley and a slow rummy simmer on the late palate. Honey, coconut and vanilla continue to keep the session sweet and dessert-like.

Full, rich and lush on the tongue, the beer's linger is long, the beer avoids the roastiness of stout but trends sweeter and savory as its chocolate flavors extend into an aftertaste of tootsie roll candy. A chocolaty sherry comes to mind deeper and deeper into the session.

Short review.

It's 16% and dark as heck. Nose is sweat but doesn't have a lot going on.

Sweat, chocolate, light rum, light coconut, chocolate again. It's good stuff. Fruity and dark fruits.

goes down harsh.

L: Had this beer on-tap at The Answer Brewpub, poured into a snifter glass. Had a deep, dark brown color and a thick consistency. There was a half inch of creamy, tan-colored, long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A sharp aroma of booze, coconut, malt, chocolate, and molasses.

T: Tasted of a good amount of chocolate (always welcome), light molasses notes, a good amount of rum (and its accompanying barrel), and a good shot of coconut. This is a big, bracing, and aggressive flavor. The rum definitely takes center stage, but the chocolate and coconut mesh well with it. A pretty well done flavor.

F: An OK amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: On the whole, this is a rock solid beer. Worth a try.

Gold-foiled 16 oz. bottle for a night-cap. I’ll sleep a good while after this. Though can I ask: what’s the difference between a stout & a 16% ABV porter?

The pour, it is dark. And the aroma, it is a spoonful of sugar, shot of rum. Aggressive.

Plank’d scrambles synapses right away; boozy would be an understatement. Is it positive that the alcohol spike to the cranium is smooth? Long, slow ululations of rum wash across the palate, with the coconut running alongside, barking. Sweeeeet. Molasses, candy, brown sugar. Thick. And while I like me a big stout, & I cannot lie, this one is a bit of a chore.

Avery’s big beers can be hit & miss, & this falls squarely in the middle of that spectrum. Good beer, but not one that I’d drink until I woke up in my own pee. Next time.

Pours out as a dark black color with a thin brown head on top. The smell of the beer is loaded with boozy rum notes, it smells a bit spicy too. The taste of the beer is chocolatey and does have a bit of a spicy burn in the finish. The feel is on the heavier side for a "porter" but it fits this beer nicely. Overall it's a massive beer with tons of flavor. I'm happy to have tried it.

Dark pour. Fair appearance, nothing stands out Headless and medium-thin body.
Aroma is nice and interesting. It’s more like peanut butter and the coconut is subtle.
The taste follows suit. Its flavor is very good though. The nutty taste evolves to a dark berry type of flavor. All good.
Feels thicker than it looks. Smooth and slick. Very low carbonation.
This is impressive because the coconut and rum are afterthoughts, and the up-front impression is earthy with a sweet-yet-balanced dark berry/ mildy tart jam. A cocoa malt character is there too, and it’s in check. So balanced for so big. Yes, it seems best as a dessert beer. Yes, it’s dangerous sipping because the booze is so well hidden, but it shows Avery hits the nail yet again with their high gravity concoctions. Nice!

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 5/24/2018. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1 finger fairly dense tan head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, toffee, marshmallow, honey, agave, spiced rum, toasted oak, nuts, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of coffee, licorice, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, pepper, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. A bit of booze in the aromas as it warmed, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, toasted coconut, and rum barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, toffee, marshmallow, honey, agave, spiced rum, toasted oak, nuts, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of coffee, licorice, molasses, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, pepper, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Mild roast/char bitterness, and rum/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, toasted coconut, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, cream, toffee, marshmallow, honey, agave, spiced rum, toasted oak, nuts, dark/brown bread, light coffee/licorice/molasses/dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, pepper, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, toasted coconut, and rum barrel flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet and rum/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, bready, and velvety mouthfeel that is fantastic. Light slickness, stickiness, chalky roast, oak tannins, and increasing dryness. Lightly increasing warmth of 16.2%, with minimal barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged flavored imperial porter! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, toasted coconut, and rum barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. This is already ready to go after only 2 months of age. Outstanding balance of rich porter malt complexity and toasted coconut; perfect rum barrel integration, not overly boozy/tannic/drying. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected. Not overly roasty.

A 12oz bottle with a bottle on date of 5.24.18. Batch #1.

L - Dark brown, and some nice brown lacing on top of the brew and on the glass. Gorgeous beer

S - chocolate, coconut, rum with a heavy dose of booze. Love it!

T - Like the aroma - lots of chocolate, coconut, and sweetness from the rum. Packs some heat and so well balanced for all that high abv

F - Medium body and fairly low carbonation but sizzles a bit

O - another amazing Barrel Aged creation from Avery. They consistently nail it
