Uncertain whether to jump into the hazy end of the pool or to stay idle in the with West Coast versions and let all the new kids on the block steel their thunder, the Avery brewers take the New England styled IPA for a test drive to see if their hazy efforts will be worth it.

With a hazy orange color and a matte finish on the glass, the frothy, ivory beer leads with a burst of citronella that's fueled by a blend of Simcoe, Amarillo, Azacca, & Mosaic hops. Honey-like and with a granola-like sense of caramel and toast, the beer's early impression is of sweet candied malt.

But the hops unfold on the middle palate for a host of radiant, bold and succulent flavors that take on a distinct tangerine character. Background notes of mango, apricot, red grapefruit and lemon blend together to reinforce a juicy, orange-centric character. Herbal underpinnings emerge as the late palate invites a malty-dry taste with the grassiness of green tea, lemongrass and citrus rinds.

Medium bodied and trending dry, the finish is a blend of bright geranium herb, orange peel and a fresh sassafras bouquet. A medium long finish of bitterness and citrus juices give the session a refreshing character with a pleasant overall character. Never completely committing to the haze, the otherwise West Coast IPA takes on a softer, fruitier and juicier taste but at the sacrifice of utmost bitterness or dryness.

I'm trying this beer at Bodegas in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It poured a hazy yellow with white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had tropical citrus peel notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with tropical fruit presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.

Poured from a can into a tulip.

Pours hazy (but not quite cloudy) orange/gold with an excellent foamy, well-retained head and good lacing. Not quite true to the style.

The aroma delivers orange (flesh, zest, and marmalade) including some sweeter Mandarin orange, as well as pineapple, mango, tangelo, and peach.

The flavors are fairly complex, with a bit more hop aggression. Honey-sweet malts very forward. Candied and marmalade orange, ruby red grapefruit, apricot, and peach arrive in midstream; they give way to some herbal and grassy hops and more citrus zest. The brew finishes with a touch of booze and some earthy/floral hops.

The brew is lively and well-carbonated, and provides a somewhat drier finish than expected for the style, (but not in a bad way). Very drinkable for the style.

Overall, it doesn't quite look like an NEIPA (which is a big deal for this style) but it hits all of the right notes in every other way.

L:. Pours a hazy lemon juice yellow with a fizzy foamy white head and thick rings of lacing around the glass.

S:. Fresh citrus, Mandarin, pineapple, some lemon and grapefruit rind, a slight woodiness.

T: Ripe tropical fruit, including orange, tangerine, lemon, a bit of woodiness, fruity but not as much as expected.

F: Creamy body light to medium mouth feel.

O:. Solid if not spectacular IPA

Poured from a can into pint glass in May 2019. There is a canned date of 3/15/2019 on the can.

Appearance: Light gold color with thick white head. Lighter than other IPAs I have drank. As per the name, it is very hazy, like other New England IPAs. Head is very thick and there is nice lacing.

Smell: Strong aroma of hops, pine, and citrus, as well as some sweetness like pineapple. Overall the citrus aroma dominates the other aromas.

Taste: Sweet taste. There is a typical hops and citrus flavor but with some sweetness as well. This is not as bitter as most other IPAs. Has a nice after taste. Overall a nice balance and very drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Light to Medium bodied. Medium alcohol which matches the 7.0% listed.

This is a good and different IPA. It has a nice mix of grapefruit, hops, and other flavors, which makes it interesting. I like the overall balance, and that the citrus flavors are pronounced but do not dominate the flavor. I typically prefer IPAs with more hop bite, but it is very drinkable and I would buy this again.

A decent offering from Avery. Slightly hazy yellow-white head-very little lacing

Tropical fruit, sweet pineapple, overipe mango. Slight bitterness on the finish.

Weakish mouthfeel but still drinkable.

Worth a try but I won't revisit.

12oz can. Poured out a hazy, golden color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of orange, pineapple and toasted caramel. Sweet tropical fruitiness with a sweet caramel finish.

Cans from Pentagon City Wines; pretty solid hazy IPA, good lacing and head, and interesting dirty yellow color. I like it, but then, I like all of Avery's beers.
