Pours a pitch black coloration with a tiny, fizzy head. Smells of dark and lighter red fruit, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, molasses, toffee and brown sugar. Taste is similarily complex, but a little too sweet and boozy, dominated by the sweeter and barrel-heavy notes of vanilla, bourbon, toffee, molasses and brown sugar, with lighter notes of dark and red fruits: date, raisin, cherry, dark chocolate, coffee and oak. Finishes quite sweet, with a very light bitterness and quite a boozy bourbon aftertaste. Thick, oily mouthfeel with quite a rich body and low carbonation. I would actually prefer Mephistopheles over this, which has a lot more interesting flavour profile that just gets muddled up by the strong, boozy bourbon notes of this. I will also say that, given the HUGE 17.8% ABV of the 2014 batch, this is *relatively* impressively mellow, but still slighty over the top for my personal taste. At the ned of the day, this just proves to me that BBA and added addjunks don't necessarily make things better. To me the subtle nuances of Mephistopheles get drowned out in slightly to sweet and boozy brew here.

Pours very dark brown to almost black. Not perfectly black, but pretty dark. The head is fairly thin and subsides to a nice little tan ring around the snifter.

The aroma is coffee, bourbon and vanilla, and it smells every bit like the 16% ABV boozy monster that it is.

The taste follows the nose, with a little bit of drying oakiness from the barrel. It’s sweet and roasty, with a little bitter on the back end to remind you that it is, in fact, still a beer, although it smells like bourbon and nearly has the ABV of port wine. The carbonation is on the lower end, which is fairly well suited to the style, I think. The body is on the thin side, as stouts go, and that’s probably the only mark I can put against the beer.

The finish is a warming, which should be expected, and the flavors linger and develop for ages. Early summer isn’t really the ideal time to drink this beer, but I’ve been sitting on it for a while and I just couldn’t resist it anymore.

I’m quite fond of coffee stouts, and especially whiskey barrel aged ones. This is an outstanding example. One of the greats.
