On cask at the Real Ale Festival at PP Carlsbad

Appearance is murky amber-orange hue, thing layer of off-white foam, moderate lacing

Smell is sweet hops, pine resin, grass, citrus, hints of tea, evergreen pine dominates, very hop-forward

Taste is tea leaves and pine needles, transitions to very bitter and drying hops, switches back to a tea flavor and bread malts, finishes with light bitter sweetness

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, thick resin texture, mild carbonation

Drinkability is moderate, feels more like a IPA/DIPA than an american barleywine, mostly lacking in the dark fruits and bold malt flavors, however the abv is well-masked and this is deilcious regardless of style

Some old notes from the Bistro 8th Annual Double IPA fest, yup, an Imperial Red at the DIPAfest. And it fit in nicely.

Beautiful mahogany and ruby red appearance. Very professional looking. Good aroma, woodsy, I wrote that I was imagining redwoods and moss.

Taste, simply right up there with Lagunitas Imperial Reds. Hoppy as hell, with that coupling red malt. Tiny bit of sweetness along with it. Grows with you, doesn't become earthy heavy like so many big red ales. Drinkable, a good change of pace.

Served in a tulip @ Brick Store Pub, during their '11 Kegs, 11 Days, 11th Anniversary'.
Deep chesnut brown, with nice blood orange hues. One finger of manilla folder yellow head.
Nice deep aromas of alcohol and fresh, stinky, dank hops. Yes I said the word dank.
Creamy first note, just before the onslaught of hop flavor hit me. Huge hop flavor...quite sticky with a massive amount of decadent pink grapefruit hop syrup. Believe it or not, noticeable malt presence...almost smoke-like.

Had this on tap at Three Floyds--
Reviewed from notes.

This is a hazy golden tinted orange color with copper and amber hints and an off white head. Huge thick sheets and rings of lacing.
This smells a lot like the regular Hog Heaven to me. There is a noticeable hoppiness, but not as much as I was really expecting. The smell and taste are like a lot of regular barleywines these days, and while that isn't a bad thing, it isn't what I was hoping for with this being a special release double dry-hopped monster that it was touted.
The serving temp seemed a bit cold, so I was hoping it would open up as it warmed...
This one is much thicker than the regular Hog Heaven. A lot more oily. Coats the teeth and strips your enamel off faster than a school of piranha on a cow. All the regular and expected smells and flavors are there-- sweet bready and caramel malts and citrus/herbal/floral hops.
The carbonation level is adequate.

This is quite delicious, but it isn't what I was hoping for. Not extremely challenging or complicated, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Comes in between that imperial red ale and barleywine categories. For being unfiltered it still looks good. Crimson. Still has that red malt peat and earth thing going, but the hops keep it from being a one trick pony in that regard. Pink grapefruit.

Taste is a good mix of a heavily hopped, bitter beer with red malt throughout. Mild sweetness, isn't overly thick or heavy in the mouthfeel. I mean, for all that red malt, something I'm not really into, this is one of the better examples of a hoppy red. Its not Loakal Red, but its not all that far off, just the next tier below. Hides alcohol well.

Not a fan of this one. Apparently it's dry hopped Hog Heaven.

Orange/amber/golden pour. Hazy. Some particulates are floating around, too. Head is weak. Would look really nice if it were more than 1/4 finger.

Aroma is hoppy. Wet grass just buries any malt that could have made it. Kinda Saison-esque with the musk.

Yeah, taste just isn't quite there. I think the hops were dried out or something. Twigs and hay scratchiness. Kind of like a bourbon-corn-dryness thing. Malt is not present to me.

It does give a bite, and I do like that. Boozy though. Didn't drink the whole glass.
