Poured into a sniftern from a bottle at the Publick House (Brookline, MA) on May 30, 2010. Bottled on 3/31/2010.

Looks like apple cider. Virtually no head and no lacing.

There is a lot going on here. Smells more like a wine than a beer. Complex. Cherries, funkiness (almost a grassylike manure?), vanilla. Woody and tart and sweet. Very interesting.

A lot going on with the taste as well... A lot of tartness with the cherry and I got a sour apple flavor. Almost a vinegar character, a little too much at times. Vanilla as well. Some heat but does not drink like 10$ ABV.

Fairly light bodied with average carbonation.

A very interesting and enjoyable brew. But a little too tart and sour to make it very drinkable. A pleasure to smell, fun to taste, but the 12oz was more than enough.

Looks like it is time to geek out! This packs a good amount of head for a high-alcohol, barrel-aged beer. This hazy, reddish, burgundy-colored brew has big, oaky, tart, vinous, musty-cellar, overripe-fruit, horse-blanket aroma ... stinky, but good. It's slick and crisp with a big, puckering tartness. Cherry flavor runs from that tartness and shows a bit of sweetness. With an oaky edge and warming alcohol, this beer is wine-like in the middle and has
a whole lot of musty-cellar flavor going around. Wild, this beer is. As it warms, it opens up a lot and the palate becomes accustomed to the subtle nuances that were once hidden. Delicious.

12 oz bottle, bottled on 3/31/10. Pours slightly hazy reddish orange with a fizzy off white head that quickly goes to a thin film.

The aroma is woody lactic pie cherries and red wine.

The flavor is sweet and tart pie cherries with a nice sour twang with some wood, red wine and maybe a little oxidation and band aid in the finish. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and a bit watery.

Overall, a decent sour cherry beer. I wonder if I hung on to it a bit long though.

12oz brown bottle with a batch date on the label.

Big crackle from the head, lacing drops down to a thin ring. Amber rose color has some haze to it. Funky aroma of lilacs, bandaid, tart blueberries and green peppercorns. Slick mouth feel with a kiss of crispness. Big tartness of cherries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries ... I guess I could have said mixed-berries but these flavors seem to come through than any other berries. Peppery and rose-water like alcohol presence warms the palate. Cracker-like maltiness within, medicinal flavors go to floral / herbal then a tad spicy. Finishes with a long linger of funk and tartness.

Pretty impressive, their ability to produce wild ales is amazing. So to have this beer and actually visit the room that it came from, see their barrel set up and all. This is a great example of what American brewers can do.

The bottle pours a hazed copper body with a small tan head that quickly vanishes without any lacing.

Complex aroma boasts bready caramel, oaky vanilla, sour cherries, vinegar, and plenty of funky brett in the form of wet concrete and attic cobwebs.

Medium body has a zippy carbonation and a lot of tartness.

Taste has a lot going on. Very sour cherries, some vinegar, oaky vanilla notes, vinous zinfandel hints, and plenty of the funky brett found in the aroma. Wet gravel, horseblanket, and musty attic traits. Alcohol is well hidden. Finishes dry, bitter, and slightly musty.

This one was bottled March 31, 2010, according to the label, but there is plenty of wild funk already going on. An excellent candidate for aging but very tasty and interesting at this young age.

12 ouncer, a splurge at $9.99 from DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY. Batch 4, bottled March 31, 2010. Pours nearly still, glowing reddish amber, a quickly departing medium tan head then no head nor lace. I get smoke, vinegar, and sour cherries. Quite sour wild ale, more cherries, some musty funkiness, more biting vinegar. As it warms some more fruit comes forward and the cherry notes soften up a bit. Not my favorite, very doubtful I'd go for this one again.

Thanks to thirdeye11 for sharing this bottle at our recent sour tasting.

The beer pours a light orange color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the brett with some cherries. The flavor is cherries and brett funk with some hints of vanilla. There is not much tartness. The flavor starts off with fruity cherries before transitioning into brettanomyces funk. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Picked this up down at From the Vine off of Polaris. Working my way slowing through Avery's reserve lineup, this is my second after Black Tot and I've got a Brabant in the fridge as well.

Appearance- Pours a murky shade of medium brown that is perhaps slightly crimson around the edges. A very aggressive pour yields about a quarter finger of fizzy tan head that dies back almost immediately to a ring and then to nothing. Some beading carbonation evident in the body of the beer however.

Smell- Interesting. I get lots of barrel on the nose, along with some lactic cherry fruity tartness, and mild funk. The wood is really prominent for me but overall I found the nose to be nice but muted.

Taste- Very prominent barrel aging/wood flavors come through initially, along with cherry pith, and the cherry tartness picked up on in the nose. Also an interesting mineral quality as well. Perhaps a little bit of slight buttery diacetyl in there. Finishes with a mild lactic bite and a long drying finish.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Mouthfeel is pretty accurate for the style, not overly thin either. Drinkability is decent as well, though I was feeling the alcohol a touch by the end.

Overall, a decent American wild ale. The barrel profile almost reminded me a little bit of Vagabond in fact. Not my favorite wild by any means but I did like it alright overall.

Pours a dark reddish brown with just a little layer of foam. Lots of coconut and vanilla in the nose with lots of horsey funk. A refined sourness with mild funky taste. The MF is creamy with a good finish. Very enjoyable.

Bought this bottle today and was excited to taste it, so i threw it in the fridge for about 30-45 minutes to get it at just the right temperature. This batch was bottled on March 31, 2010, so I probably should have let it age a litte, but I'll go grab another bottle to do that with.

This wild ale pours deep ruby colored, with a quick dissolving head. Smell resembles other wild ales I've had, with a hint of pinot and cherries. First sip the sourness hits almost immediately, but is definitely enjoyable. A few sips in and you begin to notice the wine barrel aging in the taste, awesome!. Completely smooth, and not puckering mouthfeel (probably because it's so young). Definitely a wild ale I'd buy again!

Bottle at the Brick Store.

Pours a slightly hazy amber-brown color with a half-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of large amounts of lightly tart cherries that have a slightly sugary and medicinal quality to them. Slight hints of funk waft in and out and intensify as the beer warms.

Tastes more complex than it smells. Light malt flavors kick things off and quickly give way to robust dark cherry flavors. The cherry flavors turn more tart slightly thereeafter before being tempered by mild amounts of funk midway through the sip. A distinct kick of oak comes in to clear things out and carries through to a crisp and slightly tart finish.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall I wasn't the biggest fan of this beer as the cherry flavors tasted almost artificial until I was used to it and the brett influence kicked in. Still, far from a bad beer and worth a shot if you expect more cherry and less brett.

Bottle poured into a tulip.

A- Pours a nice copper penny color. very minute head that dissipates rather abruptly. A thin lace holds for sometime after but eventually fades to nothing.

S- The smell is faint. At first I get the funk, followed by faint cherries and some pepper from the zinfandel barrels. Not to much oak on the nose.

T- Wow, a lot more present then the nose. Lots of funk and cherries, with a nice pepper and grape finish. Again the oak is mute.

M- I would say the mouthfeel is this beer's strongest point. The carbonation is present but not over barring, its not thin but not thick either.... its just right. It has a nice residual feel that lingers while my mouth salivates.

O- A good sour. I like the idea of using a spicy wine like zinfandel to accommodate the sour punch of brettanomyces. Wish there was more oak on this one though. All in all i can find myself sucking it up and paying the price tag on this one to enjoy again.

Bottled Mar 21, 2010 - one year ago to the day!

12oz. bottle served cooler than cellar temp into a goblet.

Dépuceleuse is a rich redish amber, like cognac in appearance, because it really doesn't have an signs of carbonation after the initial pour. No head, no lace.

Aroma is quite pleasant with a great balance of brettanomyces and sour cherries. The red wine barrel comes through a little too with some oak and tannins.

The flavor is incredibly intense. I thought that would have mellowed out after a year in the cellar (and granted, I didn't have it fresh) but it's still very strong. A sweetness up front, big sour cherries in the middle and a strong tannin/tartness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is difficult to judge at first, like a lot of strong sour beers. This one gets a little easier after a few sips and it begins to warm. Alcohol is felt in the chest more than the mouth.

Overall a very good wild ale but not up there with the best. The past few years have seen a lot of new examples of this style so the truly great ones separate themselves from the rest. This one is just not quite on that level.

Most pleasant drinker, not that sour at all, more tart cherry, with redidual sugars and brett. The aroma was a hint of funkiness, a little cherry. Slightly reddish colour, a little head. Just a great accompaniment to lunch. Fresh stuff, bottled March 31 2010 and just received from JMBSH. Satisfying, above average mouthfeel

Shared with capra12. Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Blue Point snifter.

A: Gentle pour yields a 1 finger semi-coarse white head with moderate retention. Beer is a rather stunning crystal clear red. Lacing is absent.

S: Wood, funk, soil, earth, and bountiful sweet cherries.

T: Cherry backbone makes this one different than a lot of other sours that are just "flavored sour". Slightly creamy, funk, wood, and a creeping tartness towards the middle that lasts until the finish. Bitters slightly and reveals a tiny hop presence just as it finishes. Finish is rather clean, leaving a slight lingering hoppiness.

M: Medium bodied, carbonated, but not too lively. Too smooth for its style and slightly grainy. Dry. Finish is clean but just a bit of an aftertaste.

D: I definitely need to revisit this one at a colder temperature (served at about 40F) to see if the body lightens and the carbonation increases. A lot of potential here but just missing the body to pull it all off.

Dépuceleuse is copper in color. It's a little hazy, and light reveals a slightly red tint. An off-white head caps it off. It rises to maybe a finger in depth, but is quick to dissipate. Too much alcohol? Perhaps. Lacing was very light.

The nose is good. It kicks off with a bit of sour cherry and grapes. There's a healthy amount of funkiness due to Brett. That should come as no huge surprise. It's very earthy and musky, as well. A little apple and pear work their way in mid-way through. They add a bit of a sweet smell. Oak is strong throughout and adds quite a bit of character and depth. Alcohol is blended well for just under 10%. Not bad at all.

I like the flavor, but it isn't mind-blowing. It is a little fruity and a bit sweet initially. Grapes, apple, and pear are notable initially. Sour cherry follows. That adds a slight tart flavor, but it's not overly tart at all. Earthy and musky notes resonate throughout. Brett imparts a funky flavor, but it's moderate. It's not too strong. Oak works very well with the other flavors and adds quality depth. Alcohol is held in check pretty well, and isn't too strong. It finishes musky and funky.

The body here is medium. Carbonation is active, but not buzzy. It has a relatively smooth feel overall. Drinkability is good. This stuff goes down pretty easy for a rather sizeable Wild Ale. The musky/funky flavor tends to grow a little tiresome toward the latter half of the bottle, but I've rather enjoyed it.

After my (infected) experience with Black Tot, I decided to jump on this one a little earlier. Dépuceleuse is a much better experience. This is a good Wild Ale. The only slight shortcoming it has is that the funky/musky flavor tends to grow stronger, and more tiresome, with each passing sip. It's good, but a single bottle's plenty enough for me. Definitely recommended though. Good stuff.

Pours a very nice cherry red color. Fairly clear. No head at all. No lacing. Nice color though.

Aroma is odd. Mostly Bret funk and a little sour cherry but the funk is a little like dust. Not totally bad just not quite right.

Taste is very cherry forward. Not a sweet cherry at all. Very dry but cherry flavor. The bret funk is a little weird in the flavor too. It's not bad but it's not the best. I wish it was a little more sour.

Mouthfeel is very dry. I like my sours dry but not that dry. Nice carb.

Overall it's not bad but I probably wouldn't drink it again.

Pours chestnut with a finger of tan head. Minimal head retention & lacing

S: Sourness, cherries, leather & raspberries

T: Much raspberry, some tartness, Oaky notes & some vinegar up front. Raspberry & acidic twang mingle with oaky dryness as this warms, some vanilla/chardonnay notes hang on the edges. Finishes tart, slightly sour ( Cherries ) & with nice raspberry notes

MF: Medium bodied, slightly acidic with puckery

A nice effort but way overpriced + $1.30 an ounce, really??
