Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.73%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Batch#5 ( 18% abv) Pours an somewhat murky amber with fast falling cream colored head. Clears up nicely minimal head retention & lacing

S: Nutmeg & all spice, nice nose throughout

T: Follows the nose, along with some booze warmth & squashyness, a little vanilla & cinnamon as well up front. Squashyness, all-spice, a little booze bite, cinnamon & rum nibbling at the edges as this warms. Finishes spicy with a assertive boozey warmth, restrained enough although mixed with a little rummy sweetness

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, slightly grainy/coarse, warming

Pretty good, pumpkin ale with plenty of heft. I'm guessing this would lay down nicely for years. Still has a few rough edges now; I imagine if you like the spices & aren't afraid of the booze now is your time

Poured from 12oz into snifter. A seasonal favorite of mine, I had this one lurking in my closet from October. Perfect for an early nightcap!

Appearance: Light brown to dark bronze in color. Not much head on this big boy (18%!)

Aroma: Oak, vanilla, rum, pumpkin, cinnamon...delicious

Taste: Brown sugar, rum, pumpkin, vanilla, a touch of oak. Warming.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full bodied with light carbonation. Perfect for this type of beer.

Overall: Different, and a real treat. That's why I love what Avery has done here. It's an 18% beer that drinks almost like a digestif. It's sweet enough without being cloying. Pumpkin beer done right in my opinion.

Poured center from 12 oz bottle into a snifter. I let this warm for about 10 minutes coming straight out of the fridge.

L: Plenty of sediment visible in the bottle even before pouring. A good squirt of carbonation escaped upon opening. Did my best to decant and only poured a half glass, still with plenty of sediment. Kind of unexpected with only 3 months of age. Thin head but at 18% I wasn't expecting much. Carbonation across the entire glass. A few isolated patches of lace.

S: Pumpkin rind and cinnamon pumpkin pie straight from the bottle. Oak, light rum, and allspice after poured.

T: Hot alcohol up front but the cinnamon is so prevalent it reminds me of hot apple cider immediately. Pumpkin still comes out I'm sure with a lot of effort from the Brewers.

F: You can definitely feels this in your stomach. Hot alcohol right up front on the palate. Feels stiffer than a shot of rum in the belly.

O: A sipper, which should be no surprise. I'm certain a lot of hard work went into this beer due to its difficulty to produce. I like rum and I like pumpkin beers, but the ABV is so stout that this is a little difficult for me to drink, and consequently enjoy. Again, high marks for such a technical beer but it's not a slam dunk for me.
