Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.90%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

This behemoth manages to embody Autumn holidays with every sip. Plenty of rum barrel-soaked notes of pumpkin spice and sweet molasses, nutmeg, cinnamon and a healthy hint of ginger, all in both scent and taste.
I almost overlooked this heavy-duty gem, thinking it was something I tried recently (I initially mistook it for Avery's PumpKYn).
This is better in the sense that it's so highly drinkable considering its high abv. The rum barrel serves the pumpkin notes well. Most of the woody notes appear in the nose and not in the taste, which is a fine balance between rich sweet malt/ molasses and rum barrel/ Fall spices.
I took half a growler once I realized this was new to try, as Avery doesn't steer one wrong in the "big beer" department. It would be great to sip through November, too.

Beer#666 that I've rated. 2015 edition. Poured into thin Unibroue snifter. A real MONSTER. Color of a pumpkin if I left it out for a while. Not much in the way of foam or lacing, but a lot of particulates floating around. Strong pumpkin smell and the barrel presence isn't overwhelming. Taste, however, totally different story. It is a big boozy bastard with a booze burn foremost with a healthy pumpkin flavor following. Glad I let it age a year, because it's a super powerful beer now, and I can only imagine how strong it would be fresh. I don't know how much rum I'm getting, but it's a great beer.

12 ounce bottle, Batch No. 5, bottled Sept 9, 2015. 18.0% ABV. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours a burnt orange color with about an inch light tan head that fizzled away quickly. Lacing is OK, and there are some floaties noticeable too. I like the aroma, the brew smells like rum, nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, allspice and some ginger. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some brown sugar and graham crackers. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's coating with a moderate amount of carbonation. Drinks easy enough for being 18% ABV. It's still a sipper, but a pretty good one. This is definitely worth picking up! $12.99 a bottle.

10/18/17 From tap at Rattle n Hum, NYC. Like a dear old aunt that hopes for better things, I decided to try this on tap. I wasn't disappointed as these guys , Avery, are pretty consistent at what they do. This one hellava beer, although it's somewhat unfair to even call it a beer. It's wet, effervescent & fragrant with a sweet, spiciness that's to be expected by the name & season.

This time around the "warmth" of the spice blend started a brush fire of heartburn that I had to will out to forge ahead. (Every pun intended).

That said the adventure in taste won out & I will surely put my money down if I see this again.

10/02/16 From bottle at home. Dated 08/27/16. Head?...what head? If I hadn't washed the glass myself I'd have thought it was dirty. Now that the shallowness of first appearances is out of the way....

The rum ageing is all up in your face. The first sip has a burn that is tempered by a rich molasses sweetness. Beyond the alcohol in the nose is a serious oak. Caramel bordering on burnt sugar is present, but it all seems to come together as long as your ready for a really robust, big experience. This is not for everyone, but there are those of us who hold it true to heart.

Aroma is pumpkin, nutmeg/spices and liquor/whiskey. The flavor is pumpkin, nutmeg/spices, malts and a mix of alcohol, whiskey/liquor and very warming in the finish.

Batch No. 6 and bottled in August 2016. Copper color, no lacing, no head to speak of. Rum and a plethora of pumpkin pie spices reach the nose. Beautiful flavors of nutmeg, cinnamon, molasses, pumpkin, oak barrel, and spiced rum. Moderate full feel with tons of boozy heat and super sticky sweet on the lips. Overall, a quite fantastic pumpkin rum aged beer! Enjoy

Bottled 8-17-16. Opened 9-25-16

L: 1/2 finger off white head, tight bubbles, good carbonation, amber color and very transparent

S: nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin pie, candied yams, caramel, mild alcohol on the back, little to no barrel but still WOW

T: follows nose almost exactly, there is no way this is 17.5% abv, minor boozyness with a lot of warming in the chest, spiced rum, not much oak

Medium feel
Overall outstanding
