Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.90%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

I guess this review will be an outlier, but I really don't care for this beer at all. I bought two 12oz bottles a couple months ago and cracked one now to try it fresh. It'll probably be five years before I drink the other one and that should make a difference. I hope.

A: clear copper, slight head, some lacing. Frankly, it looks like a good ESB.

S: sweet, fruity, not particularly complex. Juicy Fruit gum?

T: Identical to the smell. Very sweet, which hides the alcohol well, but not too appealing to me. Neither the pumpkin nor the rum really stand out for me, nor the spices. Juicy Fruit gum. At the back of my pallate, as I swallow, I can pick out the pumpkin and the spices, but that doesn't help much. Years of cellaring will hopefully remedy this utter lack of complexity.

B: much thinner than expected, but that's okay. If it weren't so sticky sweet, it might be crisp and refreshing. Which is way unexpected, but okay.

O: Meh. Needs a lot of aging in my opinion. I'll look forward to trying my second bottle in 2023 ...

Look isn't Amber copper color pretty clear very little head that dissipates quickly.
Smell cinnamon apple allspice pumpkin and a boatload of rum.
Taste mostly replicates the smell the rum is quite prevalent.
Feel it somewhat thin but that's to be expected for the type of beer in the high ABV.
Overall a very good beer somewhat sweet and just to the point that being too much .The sweetness helps to contain the alcohol presence it's definitely a sipper and toward the bottom the alcohol will become even more prevalent, but all in all it's quite tasty

Taste: complex, pumpkin spice, nutmeg, cinnamon, sweet, warm rum bite. Sweet spiced pumpkin and rum nose. Copper hue, clear, refined sticky lace on glass. Full body. Boozy does kick your but at 17% ABV for this vintage.

$ 15.99 (Including tax)/12 oz bottle ($ 1.33/oz) at Spec’s, Live Oak, TX.
Bottled 8/1/17. Cellared and served at 50 degrees ib a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Aroma – Weak spices and some oak. Lasts.
Head – Small (Maximum one cm, aggressive pour), tan, fizzy, mostly gone by the end of the pour, leaving a one mm ring fed by effervescence and a large central island.
Lacing – None.
Body – Dark orange, clear, effervescent.
Flavor – Starts sweet with understated spice and a little oak. Can’t taste the alcohol (16.9% ABV) but a short-lived gastric burn follows. The cinnamon is secondary to the nutmeg and I can’t taste any ginger. No malt, no hops, no diacetyl.
Palate – medium, creamy, lively carbonation.
Impression: Good! A little sweet. Like the face-huggers in the Alien series, once it enters your mouth, this forces its way down your throat, making this entirely too drinkable. Excellent brew with a price point fitting for the time and labor involved.
Appearance 4.25, Aroma 4.25, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4.25, Overall 4.25.

2017 bottle (bottled 07/31/2017).
Treated as an imperial pumpkin ale, this was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a dark golden bronzed copper color with a clever little transparency about it. Not much carbonation was seen rising but a quickly dispersing fizzy white semi-foamy head slid off into oblivion to leave no lace.
The aroma had a wonderful blend of pumpkin fleshy sweetness, some nutmeg, light cinnamon, rum barrel woodiness, smooth sweet vanilla, light pecan sweetness and a light touch of pie crust at the very end.
The flavor leaned towards the sweetness of the rum barrel, pumpkin flesh and pie crust while bringing in a nice balance of those previously mentioned spices. Light boozy sweet heat noted. Mild aftertaste of the pumpkin sweetness and pie crust with an extremely brisk cinnamon to rum barrel playing faintly in the background.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fine sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV was noted with a little bit of noted "sweet heat" - I wasn't bothered by that. Rum barrel woodiness and pumpkin fleshy smooth sweetness in the finish.
Overall, what a wonderful pumpkin ale to have on Thanksgiving that I would love to have again perhaps every Thanksgiving if I could.

Pours a light brown, tea color with a very slight off white head. Aroma is pumpkin spice & alcohol. To call it sweet would be an understatement, it is syrupy sweet & thick, but I’m a fan of syrupy drinks. Flavor wise is it excellent, pumpkin is dominant and spices with hints of rum flavor. I was shocked to see the ABV of 16.9. It has no alcohol flavor but mild stomach burn. Another excellent brew from Avery & perfect for Thanksgiving.

Bottled September 9, 2015 and sitting in my closet since. 18% avb.

Pours burnt orange with tons of chunky floaties. By far the most unappealing looking beer I've had in glass. I gotta think it got disturbed on the twisty mountain roads I took to get to the place where I'm enjoying this. Quarter inch of foam disappears immediately leaving no head, no lacing, just a puddle of white foam hanging around the top, slowly dissipating.

I'm all stuffed up, but I can smell spices and fusel alcohol.

Tastes smoother than expected. Pumpkin, pie spices and an alcohol bite of dark spiced rum. Definite slow sipper, but decent carbonation makes it easy to take that next sip. Not finding it overly sweet, but am also having it for desert.

Overall, a nice beer to split with a good friend on a cold night, but I doubt I need to have it again.
