Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.73%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Pours a deep amber color with some fine yeast particles floating about.

The aroma is of a buttery crust with a cinnamon and nutmeg spice. A sugary sweetness from the rum barrel.

The taste is quite sweet, very sugary. Slight buttery crust from the malt. A current of vanilla with the cinnamon and nutmeg give the beer a spiced rum flavor. Big peppery notes.

The feel is light with fizzy carbonation. Quite boozy and sticky.

I like the flavors but the beer needs more mellowing. It's very sweet and boozy.

This is one impressive beer. Batch four bottled September 22 2014, 16.73%. This brew is cellar temperature and it produces a sizeabel head that fades quickly. No lacing, a quick fade and no retention or covering. A light brown color with a bit of cloudiness in an impressively clear beer. No carbonation visible.

Nose is exquisite, layered, and inviting. A peppery alcohol sweetness hits first, atop a wave of sugars. Brown sugar, rum sugar, malt sugar. Sweet and yummy,. Pumpkin pie and mild spices. Vanilla and gentle oak. Rum and coconut.

Taste is a follow up to the nose. A wave of sweet malt and pumpkin. Nutmeg and cinnamon. Perfectly balance rum and oak. A mild hop bitterness perfectly balances what should be a cloyingly sweet exersize in alcohol excess. Slightly fusel swallow has an alcoholic evaporative cooling quality.

Feel is thick, syrupy, slick and girthy. A slick swallow and mellow carbonation that lends itself to winter sippin' like a glass of... good rum.

This is a great over the top beer. The first rum barrel beer I've had that isn't a hot mess. This is the best rum barrel beer I've had. So well done. A truly exceptional beer.

Big and boozy and amazing.... A touch less sweetness would make this perfect but as is, it's damn near the perfect cold night pumpkin ale.... Spices are cinnamon and pumpkin pie.... The rum is present without being bothersome... Glad I finally got to try this... I have heard the hype and I believe it. Very impressive offering that I will pick up again the next time that I see it... at 18%, it's not very approachable but it is damn delicious...

Bottle says "Batch No. 5," and was bottled Sept 9, 2015. I bought it last fall and am just now pulling it out.

It cracks open with a rush of carbonation, like any well-carbed beer. Pours a deep orange-amber, mostly clear but with a good bit of particulate. I leave the last half-inch in the bottle, as it's pretty sludgy. Thin film of soda-like bubbles that dies quickly. No lacing but lots of alcohol legs.

Smell is very complex and my favorite part of the beer. All the listed spices come through, smelling like pumpkin pie. The rum is there too, and it's a nice combo. Toffee, dark fruits, vanilla notes.

Taste is spicy pumpkin and rum in nice balance. The barrel flavors are well integrated. Not terribly boozy, esp for the ABV, but some burn going down. Feel is a thickish medium. A little stinging carbonation.

Overall, an interesting and tasty beer that I would put firmly in the dessert beverage category. Different, and worth trying if you like these flavors.

L: pours light brown with no head. Looks like rusty water.
S: Rum and pumpkin spice
T: like the nose, but more booze and very sweet. It's not really hot, just boozy
F: sticky, medium thickness. But boozy which makes it a sipper.

This beer pours a clear deep ruby brown with a small head. The aroma offers up nutmeg, allspice, clove, burnt orange, vanilla, brown sugar - overall heavy spiciness. The flavor features cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, coriander, burnt orange, rich brown sugar, very sweet, very boozy finish, and some licorice. The mouthfeel is full, cloying, and low carbonation. Overall this is a dessert beer with tons of spice flavors - it is very complex and deliciously boozy.

L - A finger's worth of audibly fizzy light-to-medium khaki colored froth fizzes away in the blink of an eye leaving no lacing or collar in its place... Mostly still with just a stray carbonation bubble here and there... The color is a dark resiny amber that teeters on light brown...

S - Deep, rich and robust... In your face pumpkin pie sweetness... Caramel... Graham crackers... Some light rum notes and a hint or two of Caribbean spices... Very appealing and pleasant... Quite effective...

T - The rum booziness lingers from start to finish... This sits above a huge malty base... Pumpkin pie sweetness and brown sugar abound... Some very light nutmeg and cinnamon notes on the deep finish... Not overly complex... Rather quite intense and satisfying...

F - Dense and rich... Velvety smoothness... Little or no carbonation... Coats the mouth fully... A bit sticky... A bit of chalkiness on the finish...

O - A booze bomb of epic proportions... That's typically not a compliment in my book, but it works exceptionally well in this instance... Unique and world class... A sipper to say the least... Everything is exaggerated a bit and it works really well... I have long wanted to try this and it didn't disappoint one bit... Well worth both the search and price tag if you are able to locate a bottle...

At first I was pretty miffed at the price tag of this, but I think after cracking this one I started feeling a lot better about it.

Appearance is dark, clear copper with a fizzy, light tan head that retains a thin film and collar. Fluid leaves clear legs on the glass--this is going to be a hot one!

Smells like Thanksgiving--savory, roasted squash and pumpkin, with caramelized sugar, baked pie crust and hint of boozy spiced rum in the background bringing a sort of comforting warmth that reassures you that you don't have to deal with your family while fully conscious.

Taste is sweet, boozy and savory, with rum raisin, softly roasted caramelized pumpkin, spiced rum, and soaked pie crust.

Slick and wine-like but slightly fizzy--a slow sipper for sure, finishing pretty hot.

A sticky, rum forward vegetable beer which definitely lives up to its billing. For one, if you don't like pumpkin beers or yammy type flavors then this isn't going to be for you. I split a year old bottle with a friend here, as there is little way I could finish a full one. Sweet and boozy, with a big burn in there as you sip away.

This may have been the best pumpkin beer I've ever had. The light bit of lacing on the top and it went down really smooth. While it was really high on the alcohol (17.5%), it didn't taste of it. Overall flavor was on par, subtle pumpkin and spice, but nothing over the top and in your face.
