Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.73%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Bottled Sept. 09, 2015, 18% ABV listed: pours cloudy copper color with a ton of sediment chunks floating around in the brew which led up to a 1 finger beige colored head that was full of bubbles but faded very fast as it hissed and settled into zero head with zero lacing. Looks as expected based on the heavy alcohol presence.

Smells of pumpkin, brown sugar, strong rum or bourbon, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and potpourri. It is so strong and aggressive in every way that my nose hairs constricted in fear of what was coming next.

Tastes of very strong dark rum up front, followed by brown sugar, ginger, allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, light white pepper, candied sugar, heavy hot booze which felt like a shot sliding down my throat, and toasted grains, potpourri and pumpkin pie. It is way too boozy and the heat is brash, but the way it does taste like pumpkin pie is quite impressive.

Mouthfeel is very heavy, dense and viscous, with a soup-like quality which resembles tomato bisque but you can swap out the tomato with pumpkin and add in a bunch of spices like ginger, allspice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, light white pepper, candied sugar, heavy dark rum and/or booze and then potpourri and pumpkin pie. It's all malt and spices, and even as spicy as it is this brew can not cover up the insane ABV which warms you with each sip. Spice driven, as expected for the style, yet it was the heat that surprised me.

Too many spices for my liking overall. The novelty wore off quickly here and I liked it less and less as it warmed. Too much and over the top, I could not even call it a slow sipper as it was more like a shot of Bacardi 151: you drank it fast to get fucked up while ignoring taste. That about sums this one up for me. I should have aged it but my curiosity got the best of me.

Smells boozy, rum, caramel sweetness
Flavor is very sweet. Perhaps a bit cloying but good for sipping. Like a dessert wine almost
I can detect pumpkin and rum but it is mostly just super sweet caramel and toffee. Very thin. Abv is not as near detectable as one would expect. A wonderful treat for my birthday :)

Ordered this beer online living in Florida and was super anxious to try it. Bottled 9/15 abv 15%. A: cloudy orange/light brown. Head dissipated fairly quickly due to alcohol content with a solid lacing left in the glass. S: huge notes of banana, very similar to a banana taffy, followed by spiced rum and minimal cinnamon, clove and nutmeg. T: for an 18% beer this is extremely smooth. Taste of the pumpkin spice upfront followed by huge notes of the oak and rum spices from the barrel. After sitting for a second I can feel the burn in my chest from the rum. Such a great feeling. O: extremely impressed with this beer. Heard such high reviews among the community and decided to give it a try myself and am not disappointed. I'm not really into pumpkin beers myself, but would be into drinking this beer again next year.

A pumpkin pie colored liquid with a light tan head that leaves only a speck of lacing here or there. The smell is reminiscent of a pumpkin pie that someone soaked in rum. There is a crust like bread smell with rum, caramel sweetness, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon and fresh pumpkin. The taste is all of this. At the first sip it tastes like a pumpkin pie brûlée. The breadiness plays with this to round out the whole pie experience. The rum then takes over and brings some of the pie spice along for a fiery ride. There is a burn like you would expect from a 18% beast but the sweetness keeps it in check. This is a great beer that screams for a cold fall night and a raging fire.
