We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

Pours cloudy orange brown with a small tan head that fades into a wisp. Legs down the glass. Light retention, but pretty impressive given the high ABV.

Big sweet rum notes along with some pumpkin flesh and just a little earthy spice.

In general, I will have to say I'm amazed how close to tastes to pumpkin pie soaked in rum. Big pumpkin character up front which is refreshing since I hate "pumpkin" beers that are just overly spiced. The rum does a good job of lending some spiciness to complement, but not overpower the pumpkin. A decent amount of cinnamon with a little nutmeg on top of the rum spices. Not nearly as boozy as the nose although it is noticeable. My only complaint would be it's a touch on the sweet side.

Thick bodied with lower carbonation levels appropriate to the ABV level. Booze is noticeable, but hidden fairly well and I wouldn't have guessed it'd be this high.

Pumpkin beers aren't usually my thing, but this was an enjoyable over the top take on one. Would still prefer some other barrel aged things to this, but still very solid.

Cellared this beer for over 9 months

Pours a clear, dark brown body. Head is a 1/4 inch and tan in color. Lacing was average and head retention was good for such a strong beer.

Smell is of sweet pumpkin pie puree mixed with nutmeg, cinnamon, spiced rum and light alcohol. Sweet caramel, candied figs, and Belgian rock sugar round out the aromas. Hops are not present, this beer is all about sweet malt and spiced pumpkin.

Taste is of sweet, buttery diacetyls, pumpkin pie, clove and nutmeg. Caramelized brown sugar and Belgian Rock sugar is also there, this beer shares similarities to a high quality barleywine or quad. Hops are non existent, alcohol is faint but for 16% alcohol, dangerously well hidden. Rum barrel added some sweetness and spice to overall flavor.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly syrupy, pretty typical for the alcohol content. The head could have been fuller, thats my only gripe with the texture of this beer.

Overall this beer was amazing. I've had it fresh and aging it for almost a year has transformed it into a completely different class. This beer is definitely the gold standard when it comes to Pumpkin/spiced beers, yet its uniquely different from any pumpkin beer I've had. Its a shame that there is no more of this beer available and no plans have been made to release it again. One thing is for certain though, if it does get released again, I will be hoarding a case for my collection.

2011 vintage

A. Cloudy, murky orange with lots if sediment and particulates. Good half finger of cream colored head. Lacing is also quite good. The color, however, is not.

S. Lots of brown sugar, some cinnamon and clove, roasted pumpkin, some boozy and vanilla rum qualities, and some earthy woodiness that gives it a slightly musty finish. Not bad.

T. This was surprising. Very barleywine-esque, with a prominent brown sugar and dark fruit flavor profile. Lots of toasted bread crust, clove, cinnamon, and a big kiss of booze on the back end. The finish is tannic and boozy with a big oak kick and some vanilla notes from the rum. Surprisingly good. The pumpkin character isnt very present outside of the spice. I am not sure I would recognize this as a pumpkin ale as opposed to a strong ale or barleywine without the label. It's good though. It is really freakin good.

M. Is there any way to not make a 16% beer taste boozy? Because this does. But it is also sweet, malty, spicy, and the rum barrel is very nicely integrated. Rum in particular was a great choice for this beer. It compliments it very nicely. It's boozy yet balanced.

O. Very surprised. This is boozy and really too much for one person to comfortably enjoy. But it's like a pumpkin barleywine, a behemoth of a pumpkin beer that is very well made. Like a traditional pumpkin on steroids, Avery Rumpkin overcomes its shortcomings to, in the end, become a pretty good beer. (bonus points for using "come" three times in the last sentence)

Thanks to barzigkin for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a hazy orange color with no real head. The aroma has a lot of pumpkin pie spices in it, as well as some rum notes. I get some cinnamon and allspice most predominantly. The flavor is similar. I get some big pumpkin notes, as well as some cinnamon, allspice and cloves. There is also a good dose of oak and a ton of rum character. The beer is very boozy and fairly sweet. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Little white head. Color is a bronze golden amber.

This beer is pretty much like most pumpkin beers but it has a nice oak flavor and the rum does show. Lots of pumpkin and spice.

This beer hides the abv well and drinks fairly easy despite all the spices. Reminds me of new Hollands rum ichabod.

pours a deep, dark amber tone while yielding a short-lived 3/4" head; a bit of patchy lacing evident. nose is rich, sweet, and malty with notes of rum, spice, and booze. for better or worse you know this one will be something else.

flavor is hugely sweet and malty... and boozy; cloyingly sweet, in fact, all of which in my opinion overshadow it's other characteristics (spice, pumpkin, molasses, a little vanilla - which are discernible, just eclipsed). medium-full on the palate with average carbonation.

overall, just way too sweet and boozy for my taste, although i can see where it might be appealing to others. i like bold pumpkins but this just didn't work for me. disappointing (especially considering it's $12.95 price point).

Bottle from Oct 2011.

Copper body, minimal head. Spicy rum, booze, barrels, & pumpkin aroma. Taste brings everything together smoothly with hearty pumpkin, plenty of rum, and strong booze too. The balance here works quite well; I do love this beer.

Rumpkin will age with the best of them; can't wait to see how this develops in a few years.

Picked up a bottle of this at Russel's in Amherst. Poured into a Duvel tulip.

A - Very impressive for such a boozy beer. Poured a crystal clear darkish copper with a nice half a finger creamy head that faded to leave nice thin creamy mochaish blanket and very very light side lacing. Very impressive.

S - Some nice cooked veg aromas, definitely some soft pumpkin notes. There are some very boozy rum barrel notes. Light wood, definitely very warm still.

T - Still quite boozy with lots of rum notes. There are some light wood notes and , quite sweet, with very light pumpkin. Lots of rum sweetness and some light malts. Faint pumpkin.

M - Mouthfeel isnt bad, a bit too sweet, slightly sticky. Definitely a sipper.

O - Overall this isnt a bad beer, it should be expected that this would be super boozy. Glad I have a few extra bottles to try and age to see if things mellow out.

A huge thanks to BdubleEdubleRUN for hooking me up with some bottles of this. Poured into a matching Avery cervoise, the brew appears a hazed amber with a finger of tan head. The cap recedes leaving some spots of lace on the glass and rising bubbles of carbonation maintain a thin layering atop. This is a mighty attractive looking brew for 15+ abv. I am surprised at the head retention for such high strength. A swirl agitates bubbles from solution that collect to form nearly a finger of yellowish-stained creamy topping and the swirl paints strings of thing lace on the glass.

The smell is big and boozy which is not surprising considering this beast was bottled 7 months to the day tomorrow. It has almost a raisiny alcohol ester about it that is complimented by a spirit reinforced strength (this is the rum playing into the nose here I assume.) There is a bit of spiced quality as expected from the pumpkin aspect, it is mildly reminiscent of an earthy sort of nutmeg and cinnamon. There is a bit of earthiness about this brew suggesting almost a veggie quality that you would expect if a large amount of pumpkin was included in this. There are some complimenting spices here that I just cant put my finger on, I am assuming this is the rum contribution maybe coupled with any spices that they put in to this. Regardless, I am really digging this and it works for me.

The taste hits hard with alcohol. It is mildly fusel but very well accented by a spirited inclusion of rum. The flavor of the alcohol comes across almost like dark fruits and raisins just like the aroma indicated. There is a significant amount of earthy quality here that I assume to be the pumpkin inclusion, it is complimented by some spices of nutmeg and cinnamon. More sips bring out a familiar spice that I just cant put my finger on until I break down and read the label. Ginger it is, and it brings a fresh brightness to the brew that is very enjoyable mixed with the earthy quality and deep pumpkin flavor. There is no avoiding the alcohol though, when you take a deep sip it tingles and burns right up your nose. However, rightfully there is a quite a significant amount of residual sweetness that helps to keep everything in check.

This is a medium to full bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Despite being a huge brew, it is lively in the feel with the bubbles keeping this one from really dragging you down and destroying your palate too easily. The big presence of alcohol also helps to seemingly thin things out a bit by almost evaporating on the tongue. Overall I found this brew to be really good. I know it is met with big variance but I really enjoyed it and will be looking to secure more of this for drinking in October for years to come.

A: Pours a beautiful dark amber that is clear and bright with little to no head

S: Incredibly bold on the nose with  plenty of spice, a lingering cinnamon from the pumpkin puree, and molasses like sugar.

T: Im not to big into pumpkin ales but i had to jump at the opportunity to try this barrel aged attempt. Quite thick with low carbonation and huge flavor explosion reminiscent of  nutmeg. A little all spice with lingering cinnamon and really mild rum characteristics.

M: Pretty thick and syrupy but not overwhelming kind of like mephistopheles. 

O: Soo this is a good offering. Nice and complex but prolly should of split it with a friend to compare notes with. I dig it but wish it was a little drier and wish it i could taste more of the wood and rum

12oz bottle into a tulip

A: Pours a hazy dark orange, almost brown, with a small tan head that fades to a ring and leaves a tiny bit of lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is very heavy on the pumpkin along with some vanilla, rum, and spices. The alcohol isn't exactly in your face here but you can tell it's lurking in the background.

T: The taste is a huge blast of vanilla, rum, pumpkin, nutmeg, allspice, and more pumpkin. Much better than the nose led on and everything is very big.

M: The feel is on the thicker side of medium with a decent level of carbonation.

O: The tap version of this was so-so but this bottle is great stuff. I am sad I only have one more of these and definitely plan to get more during the next release.

a - brew poured a crisp transparent amber with lively carbonation. a small head was present upon pour, but gone quick.

s - really nice cinnamon pumpkin spice. the rum barrels add a really nice elemnt of fruitiness.

t - fantastic. pumpkin cinnamon and rum fiesta. booze is well hidden.

m - smooth and flavorful. sangria like.

o - overall, a winner. i've had the pleasure of having this once before and it is just as amazing as i remembered. as far as pumpkin beers go, this one is at the top of the list. as far as barrel aged beers go, this one is at the top of the list. perpetual ISO.

8oz draft pour served in a slender tulip for $8. Sampled 12/16/11.

Per the menu, "this beer is breed with pumpkin puree and a blend of 5 spices...aged in extremely fresh Gosling's rum barrels for 6 months..."

A: Pours a completely opaque, very dark amber color with ruby highlights along the glass's edge. Less than 1 finger of head on the pour which is light tan in color and quick to disappear. While a solid collar remains, lacing is unlikely. And it is.

S: After many intriguing sniffs, I'm unsure if the aroma is decent or detestable. Big pumpkin puree aroma with sopping wet dark fruit standing in uncut dark rum. The autumnal spices play the background more than expected, which is the only positive I find in the nose. Ultimately, I've decided this beer is not for me. And the longer the beer sits - the more offensive it becomes. Pumpkin beers are clearly not suited for stratospheric levels of alcohol.

T: Sickly sweet. The malty sweetness is just too big for the flavor profile. The caramel component is abrasively strong and adds unnecessarily to the already-too-prominent flavors of toffee and butterscotch. These flavors linger long, overstaying their welcome for minutes after each sip. Someone get me a glass of water. Somebody else: Light me up a cigarette.

M: The mouthfeel is actually decent. Adequate carbonation. Gently fizzy...but still cloyingly sweet. The rum barrel is less significant on the palate - mainly showing up on the backend - where it leads to an entirely unpleasant finish. Way too hot. Attenuation seems low.

O: I planned on Rumpkin being my last beer of the night, but that wouldn't have been fair to myself or my palate. So I sent back what remained in the glass and ordered something that I could enjoy.

Rich, the richest pumpkin I have had? I am overwhelmed by booze and rum, did I know and expect 16% abv? Medium brown, with cinnamon and nutmeg. Smooth mouthfeel, a tad above average. No lasting head. Spicy invigorating but yes high abv aroma. Damn I must eat to stay balanced after this amount of booze, but damn worth it.

A: Orange dark amber with dusk finish. Little white head from a gentle pour.

S: Barrel Warmth.

All in subtle tertiary aromas - Roses, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, and even a minute amount of clove.

T: Sweet, which masks alcohol, and even some barrel. Still titloads of barrel warmth. Sweet smooth, balanced pumpkin pie (cookie) extract flavor. Has a note of beer bread flavor too. 15.9%? I wouldn't know. This has a slight candied yam flavor on the finish as this approaches room temp.

M: Smooth. Carbonation is not noticeable and it doesn't matter. A significant amount of residual sugar, but appropriate and enjoyable.

O: A wee hot after its gone down and sat a while but this is very enjoyable. Definitely one to split, sip, and savor.

Cloudy amber/caramel color with thin head that dissipates quickly. Nothing spectacular about the appearance, but I don't tend to place too much empahsis on this aspect of beer -- it's more about nose and flavor for me.

The aroma is pretty delightful: torched sugar, rum, caramel, vanilla, booze, a flutter of dark fruit. A second whiff harkens back to mom's kitchen in late autumn in New England - warm pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon.

Taste for me is delectable - like a sweet and complex, albeit boozy, dessert that galvanizes my palate. Almost like noshing on the butane-torch-caramalized crust of a pumpkin custard that's been aged in oak. A truly sweet, rummy, oaky, caramel raisin sensation. When the tasty flavors mellow I become more aware of the intense booze - this one packs a wallop at 15.9%.

Overall this is an outstanding beer. I can see how it could be a bit too sweet for some, but it's a gustatory homerun for me. The second bottle was a bit overkill, but the first one was amazing.

Time to catch up on reviews of beers I had over the holidays. On draft at Capone's. Served in a 5.5 oz snifter...

A - Presented a deep orange color with some honey-like highlights when held to the light. Surprisingly nice eggshell white head that recedes to a cap. Some nice lacing.

S - Whoa. Sweet rum and vanilla come out right away; much more rum than I would've expected. This is followed by a big blast of nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, brown sugar and pumpkin. The aromas are quite sweet.

T - Quite sweet and very rich; and I have a BIG sweet-tooth. Lots of rum stands out mixing trying to mix with the pumpkin and pumokin pie spices (allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon). Caramel malts and oak come through too making it seem much sweeter.

M - Medium to full bodied beer that is quite rich, sticky and sweet. Higher carbonation than I would've expected, but it was on tap.

O - The sweetness of this one, mixed with the high ABV, made it a little tough to get through. DEFINITELY a sipper if I've ever encountered one. Really interesting idea, although I wonder if rum barrels were the best choice for a beer like this.

12oz bottle poured into Narke tulip.

A - Pours a mirky burnt orange/brown color, thin collar.

S - Big boozy rum notes, nutmeg, brown sugar, cinnamon, light pumpkin. The note is very sweet and spicy with lots of booze. I think the pumpkin really gets lost in the mix here. That said, it's still a nice nose, just a bit too much going on.

T - Well, I didn't notice until after the first few sips that was beer clocks in at almost 16%! I was wondering why I was tasting a huge booze-bomb, and that's exactly why! The booze really isn't as big as 16%, but I would still have guessed 12% or so. Similar to the nose, lots of spices, rum, light barrel, and perhaps maybe a touch of pumpkin (but not enough).

M - Medium, light carbonation, creamy spice finish.

O - Well, it's a nice take on a pumpkin ale, but a bit too boozy for me to enjoy more then 4-6oz. I couldn't finish the 12oz bottle by myself without fear of passing out, so I just gave the rest to my sink. That said, I would easily drink my first pour and did enjoy it. It's "different", but not near excellent or world-class. Give it a try and see for yourself!

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dark orangey color ale with a sizeable foamy head with OK retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of rums and cinnamon is quite intense with loads of sweet notes. Taste is a complex mix of cinnamon, light pumpkin and rums layered with a solid but extremely sweet malt backbone. Body is full with limited filtration and good carbonation. This is a complex one for sure though it was too sweet (a 12 ounces bottle can easily be shared) to drink repeatedly.

So this is something I've wanted to try for awhile now.

The bottle has an interesting label and describes the beer adequately. It's easy to observe a thin layer of yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. An unexpectedly rich hazelnut brown pours from the bottle leaving almost no head. It smells like a caramel apple mixed with fall spices...intoxicating. There is something slightly vegetal smelling and almost none of the alcohol bite can be detected in the nose. The taste follows through with syrupy brown sugar and intense rum which is followed by an interesting contrast from the potent alcohol. This beer defines "Fall," but doesn't highlight the pumpkin. The mouthfeel is sweet and spicy with a medium-full body and ample carbonation. It's definitely a sipping beer. Overall this beer is too expensive and too hard to get. However, I'd be excited to have this beer once a year to celebrate the fall season and pumpkin harvest!

Rumpkin. Rum and pumpkin. The idea sounds absurd, which is why I'm so happy to try it. Several thanks to jl28r1 for a chance to try it. Poured into a snifter. Bottled Oct. 5th, 2011.

3.0 A: Transluscent darker amber color. Just one finger of fizzy off white head that fell in an instant. I'll cut Avery a break since this has a monster ABV.

4.0 S: Definitely unlike anything I've ever smelled before. Pumpkin (as in the real stuff) is explosively present in this. The spices have apparently died down a bit, but there's there's hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. Only mildly boozy, which is impressive for the ABV. Caramel maltiness. Rum adds a nice underlayer of complexity

4.5 T: I must say I like this quite a bit. Rum and pumpkin work together. It's as simple as that. Like the nose, pithy pumpkin is abundant. Spices are a bit more apparent with nutmeg and cinnamon again leading the charge. Plenty of caramel with a light toastiness. Booze is there, but this seems more like a 10% brew than a 15.9% one. Rum gives a sweet molasses.

4.5 M: Heavy body. Rich creaminess with a sticky molasses component. Very nice.

4.5 D: I like this beer a lot. I think pumpkin beers are a great thing, but sooo many breweries bitch out and make weak, tasteless base beers and throw pumpkin spices in. Avery gets all the credit in the world for bucking that trend.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Bottled in October, 2011. Not sure if I'm ready for this.

Pours a deep copper/brown color with good clarity. A small tan head fades and leaves some lacing. Smell is FULL of alcohol with lots of spices, pumpkins, grains, and caramel. Aroma is strong. Taste is decent. So much booze and pumpkin. Not much going on in the taste. Leaves a sticky coating on the tongue. Mouthfeel is pretty full. Overall this is a truly unique beer but just too much for my palate.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A - Pours a rusted brown color, murky in appearance that's completely opaque. It steadily builds a 1-fingered, rocky head with okay retention.

S - The nose is almost entirely fresh, hot rum mixed with festive spices. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice run rampant and flutter in between the rum, oak, and vanilla to create a very nice combination of flavors. I'm not getting a ton pumpkin; in fact, I'm hard-pressed to really find any of the pumpkin aromas. Despite this, the barrel and spices more than compensate.

T - The flavor immediately transitions nicely from the the nose delivers, starting first and foremost with the rum. It's actually somewhat amazing how much rum flavors Avery is able to squeeze from the barrel, and with the high amount of alcohol, it really seems as if there is a shot of rum added to this beer. Despite this rather harsh tone, the beer is still pretty smooth and you don't get an offensive alcohol flavor, but rather only the heat of it. Luckily, Avery is able to deliver on the promise of pumpkin in the taste, but it is surprisingly disjointed from the spices. Not in a necessarily bad way, but you don't get the 'pumpkin pie' combination that you do in other pumpkin beers, but rather an earthy, pulpy pumpkin flavor and the spices are all-together separate. The finish is full of the cinnamon and all-spice, along with a touch of oak and a decent amount of vanilla. Of course, at almost 16% abv, the alcohol is ever present.

M - The mouthfeel is heavy-bodied with good carbonation. This is a big, bold, sipper, no doubt about it. It's chock full of flavor and composition of the body definitely reflects this.

D/O - Drinkability is surprisingly high. My prior experience with Avery's high alcohol beers (Mephistopheles) ended in a very alcoholic affair that was a challenge to get this. Rumpkin is almost completely different from that, however, as even though it is still a beer that is gently nursed and sipped, each taste is to be savored as even the smallest sip delivers a rush of flavor. I guess my only qualm is that I wouldn't exactly call this a pumpkin beer as it isn't the focal point of this beer at all. The alcohol is not as off-putting as I was preparing for, but I can easily feel it halfway through the glass. Thankfully this is only bottled in a 12oz format!

Murky light brown body. Lots of floaties, carbonation streaming up the glass, alcohol legs (while the beer is still on the cold side, not after it warms), and of course no head whatsoever...wouldn't expect any from such a high ABV beer.

Candied pumpkin aroma upfront along with some of the added spices and caraway seed. Ginger and rum notes come out more in the back end.

The rum barrels don't overtake the beer...I'm am getting the alcohol burn/sweetness though. Flavors of vanilla, pumpkin, ginger towards the middle/finish, nutmeg, and faint taste of cinnamon as the beer drys out. Middle of the mouth the rum and pumpkin flavor springs up in unison. Sweetness coast the mouth and really sits strong on the tongue. Finishes a bit thin also.

Alcohol presence is quite strong, at 16% it is quite understandable, but I've had a few beers at this strength that do a better job of masking it. That's not to say I don't enjoy alcohol heat in certain beers. The only problem is that it really overtakes the taste/feel in the finish which subtracts from some other qualities. The beer finishes very one note. A strong alcohol sweetness coats the palate and what came through in the taste/feel from the start to middle is fazed out. I still find plenty to enjoy here, but taking the alcohol level down a notch and adding some more body could do a lot to this brewski. A very intriguing take on a pumpkin beer.

A - Shimmering ruby and copper, translucent; looks very clean. An aggressive pour gives a tan finger head, but quickly falls down to a sturdy ring around the edge of the glass that has been hanging out for a bit.

S - Lots of barrel character - charred wood, sweet/sugary rum, vanilla, a bit of toasted coconut. Then the pumpkin essence wafts in - nutmeg, cinnamon, hearty bread.

T - A rum barrel can really do nice things to a pumpkin beer. Fact: all pumpkin beers are godawful and need things to make them be less awful. Enter: rum barrel! In this case, all of the characteristics from the barrel found in the nose are right here in the flavor - burnt wood, gobs of vanilla, toasted coconut, supersweet molasses and caramel. This would absolutely be cloyingly sweet if it wasn't for that burnt barrel taste keep the sweetness in balance. The spice comes in shortly thereafter and isn't bad - again, nutmeg, cinnamon, maybe a little anise, but overall the spices aren't overpowering or making me think twice about spending $10 on a 12oz beer...

M - The body is mediumish, perhaps a bit on the thin side and the carbonation is a little high for my liking. The mouthfeel comes off as a little harsh.

O - For a guy that hates pumpkin beers, this is mildly enjoyable. About halfway through the beer I discovered I was drinking a 15.9% beer. Other than a very slight heat i'm getting in my gums, the booze is hidden like a boss.
