Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.90%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

2014 bottle into a snifter.

Avery says this is a porter, made with pumpkin, and aged in rum barrels.

I'd say it's more like a barleywine ... a very potent concoction, on the sweet side. The aroma is huge (and I know I don't have the most sensitive sniffer, so for me to really get knocked out by the aroma, it's got some oomph!).

Drinking this one year after bottling, the ABV was strong, but appropriately so. The 17.22% (who knew you could have 2 decimal places in an ABV?) is part and parcel of the overall barleywine effect, and fits in well with the other components of the ale.

The flavor is a well balanced blend of pumpkin (in the background), roasted notes, rum, typical spices, and some sweetness. I did not find it to be syrupy sweet.

I had one bottle, shared with 3 friends, so we each had just a small snifter. That was plenty, and it was very enjoyable. I wouldn't drink this often, but it is certainly memorable.

Appearance: burnt orange with no head or lacings. There is some sediment but not a lot.

Smell: Tons of rum with hints of gin. You can just smell the alcohol. On a side note there is a a ton of pumpkin pie aroma but the alcohol overshadows it a bit.

Taste: predominantly alcohol but tons of pumpkin pie spices - especially cinnamon and cloves. The intense spices complement very well with the alcohol. There's also plenty of candied sugar. It's very sweet, almost syrupy. There was nothing I found that was underwhelming.

Mouth feel - wow it burns. Not like hard liquor but plenty of heat all over. Also very syrupy mouthfeel.

Overall: this is a boozy mess. However it is what it is - a high alcoholic pumpkin beer. The spices in this beer is intense as well as the alcohol. You absolutely need to share this with a friend.

2014 edition consumed 10/7/15. Deep amber/copper color with no head. Smells of the fall season, various spices. Unbearably sweet. Notes of clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin. Medium full body and low carbonation. With so many pumpkin beer options available, I'll save the $14 for something more enjoyable.

Looks like an ale.... which indeed it is. Highly carbed on 2 out of 3 bottles sampled. Good carb on the 3rd. The smell warns of the taste to come. Beware if you can not handle straight shots of top shelf liquor leave this bottle on the shelf for people who indeed can appreciate this delicious dessert beer. The smell is rum and some delicious pumpkin pie. The best way to sum up the taste is imagine biting into some costco pumpkin pie with rum infused whip cream topping it off. Be wary it is indeed packing some heat. Rumpkin brings a welcoming warming feeling all the way down to the belly. The burn is indeed there. Wake up if you did not expect this......18%. Enjoy the entire taste with sips please. You waste your money otherwise( yes it is over priced already). Sip to enjoy the complete flavors and your taste buds will indeed love you. The feel is that of an ale.Overall the tag is hefty. The competition is weak. Should we have to pay wagyu beef prices for a prime steak. I guess if the Competition can not rise to the table and we are left with a bunch of select steaks we have to carry the burden of supply and demand. Happy drinking. Hope the pumpkinator blows this out of the water. Rrrrrr

Pours a hazy burnt orange color. Smell and flavor are hugely complex, dominated first by shots of aged rums, with all that sugary and oaky complexity. Caramel and boozyfruits are present. Then the sip ends with the pumpkin spice and pumpkin pie flavors, from cinnamon and nutmeg and allspice to hints of brown sugar and pumpkin seeds and pumpkin meat. If you don't care for pumpkin beers, this may not make you a believer, but it's an absolutely successful experiment. I was skeptical of the idea of aging a pumpkin beer in rum barrels, but this is perfectly executed and pushes the boundaries of what pumpkin beer could be.

big, boozy pumpkin pie flavors. Make no mistake, this is a pumpkin pie beer, but it's an 18% abv version. It's sweet, it's got lots of cinnamon, malt, and booze. very well crafted however.

Not worth the 12$ however.

BEER #1500!!!

A- Dark, opaque, brown and orange.
S- Rum, Rum, and more rum. If there is pumpkin in there it's hard to pick up on. Still delicious!
T- I get a hint of pumpkin ale but dominated by rum. Maybe bc this is from 2014 and the pumpkin has faded.
M- GREAT carb for such a heavy barrel aged beer. Very impressed!
D- One and done but makes a SUPERB sipper. I hope that I can trade for more!

Look: Ruby red goodness. Dark white halo. Slick curtains
Smell: This smells really good. Fresh earthy pumpkin goodness. Aromas of a spiced pumpkin pie with fun.
Taste: Earthy pumpkin goodness with faded rum flavors. Sweetness.
Feel: Maybe syrupy. Some stickiness left over in the mouth after consumption.

Overall - Spiced pumpkin in a barley-wine. Bold and sweet.

I may have made the mistake of drinking this 18%er 12 days after the bottling date. Overwhelming booziness overwhelmed any of the virtues the beer may have otherwise possessed. Unless you like a mega-booze bomb, I suggest giving Rumpkin substantial time to age before diving in!
