Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

A: The beer is clear orange amber in color. It poured with a short white head that died down, leaving only some wispy lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of pumpkins and pumpkin spices are present in the nose along with some hints of rum.
T: This beer tastes like pumpkin pie along with a shot of rum. No alcohol is perceptible. The rum flavors seem to get a bit stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an exceptional pumpkin ale that manages to combine flavors of pumpkins and spices along some complementary notes of rum. This tastes more like a 9% of 10% abv beer as it hides its alcohol very well.

Nice amber clear filtered body. Nice lacy orange head.

Spicy rum cinnamon and nutmeg. A little pumpkin to be had. Very boozy aroma.

Cinnamon and brown sugar open up a nice sweet chewy malt body. Sweet rum notes. The pumpkin lingers in the back as a nice finishing touch (along with a slight alcohol burn).

Very chewy and creamy low carbonation. Good sipper with a very complex flavor profile. I'm not sure I'd like another, but it is a very well crafted beer to be sipped and appreciated.

So this is something I've wanted to try for awhile now.

The bottle has an interesting label and describes the beer adequately. It's easy to observe a thin layer of yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle. An unexpectedly rich hazelnut brown pours from the bottle leaving almost no head. It smells like a caramel apple mixed with fall spices...intoxicating. There is something slightly vegetal smelling and almost none of the alcohol bite can be detected in the nose. The taste follows through with syrupy brown sugar and intense rum which is followed by an interesting contrast from the potent alcohol. This beer defines "Fall," but doesn't highlight the pumpkin. The mouthfeel is sweet and spicy with a medium-full body and ample carbonation. It's definitely a sipping beer. Overall this beer is too expensive and too hard to get. However, I'd be excited to have this beer once a year to celebrate the fall season and pumpkin harvest!

730th Beer of the year. Mission Accomplished!!

App- This is a hard color to describe for me. Imagine a whiskey with orange and the edges are a bit of darker brown with some amber mixed in. Only a 1/2" of mocha colored head formed even with a semi-aggressive pour. Head was very fast receding and very craterous and fell to only about an 1/8" of bubbles.

Smell- On the opening whiff of this one you get a healthy dose of the fresh cut pumpkin. The rum follows to sting the nostrils a tad bit. It smells boozy as well and needs a good bit of time to settle down. The spices are the last to come on the aromatics. More nutmeg and cinnamon overall.

Taste- You can tell what this is. It's big, bold and brash. A beer meant to sip on and not guzzle. It's not a young beer or hot but that whispy booze from the nose comes as more of cloying sweet and rich spirit barrel flavor. Quite enjoyable. The pumpkin is quite upfront on the taste and the barrel treatment really adds a great depth of flavor to this one.

Mouth- It's a pretty full bodied ale with a good bit of medium carbonation behind it. The residual flavors linger for quite a bit and leaves a really spicy boozy rum flavor.

Drink- Very boozy and strong but well tamed. If you've had this beer that sentence makes sense. The pumpkin/rum combo was a smart choice for Avery to go with. One of the other barrel treatments and I fear this beer wouldn't have worked as well. I feel a year for this to sit and mellow would do wonders for it. Now I guess I have to try and find another bottle since Bevmo sold out....What a problem to have.

This is a 2012 bottle that is being reviewed.

A - Pours an orange/ruby color that's a little hazy which disappears as it warms to crystal clear. The head is light tan color and dies down almost as quickly as it's poured, no carbonation.

S - Figs, pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, sweet caramel malt, and boozy rum aroma.

T - Sweet caramel malt briefly out front before being drowned out with pumpkin, cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg, candied figs, light vanilla, light oak, and a huge medicinal wall of rum booziness. The sweetness is almost cloying at times. There is some nice complexity but it gets squashed and overshadowed by the aggressive rum presence. Leaves a coating of spices and rum in the mouth making it salivate like crazy.

M - Oily, viscous, slick, velvety smooth, full bodied, lightly syrupy.

O - The strong alcohol presence forced me to score this lower on the taste scale which is unfortunate because the beer is wonderfully complex. The first few sips left my throat with a "fire in the hole", too medicinal and needs to be aged to mellow out as would any young high alcohol beer like this. (IMO) 'Good thing I have (5) of these left to cellar experiment with. Looking forward to trying another in 6-12 months to see how it's progressing.

2011 vintage

A. Cloudy, murky orange with lots if sediment and particulates. Good half finger of cream colored head. Lacing is also quite good. The color, however, is not.

S. Lots of brown sugar, some cinnamon and clove, roasted pumpkin, some boozy and vanilla rum qualities, and some earthy woodiness that gives it a slightly musty finish. Not bad.

T. This was surprising. Very barleywine-esque, with a prominent brown sugar and dark fruit flavor profile. Lots of toasted bread crust, clove, cinnamon, and a big kiss of booze on the back end. The finish is tannic and boozy with a big oak kick and some vanilla notes from the rum. Surprisingly good. The pumpkin character isnt very present outside of the spice. I am not sure I would recognize this as a pumpkin ale as opposed to a strong ale or barleywine without the label. It's good though. It is really freakin good.

M. Is there any way to not make a 16% beer taste boozy? Because this does. But it is also sweet, malty, spicy, and the rum barrel is very nicely integrated. Rum in particular was a great choice for this beer. It compliments it very nicely. It's boozy yet balanced.

O. Very surprised. This is boozy and really too much for one person to comfortably enjoy. But it's like a pumpkin barleywine, a behemoth of a pumpkin beer that is very well made. Like a traditional pumpkin on steroids, Avery Rumpkin overcomes its shortcomings to, in the end, become a pretty good beer. (bonus points for using "come" three times in the last sentence)

Pours a dark amber with an initial 1/2 inch head that quickly fizzes away to barely a ring; not surprising.

Smell is sweet pumpkin flesh mixed with raisin.

Taste is pretty intense. Tons of pumpkin. Sweetness, rum-soaked raisin. I'm getting a slight alcohol burn towards the end, not shocking for the ABV. It kinda-sorta works here with the sweetness.

Good carbonation but definitely one to sip based primarily on the ABV but also the sweetness. There's that burn again. There is no question this is a high gravity brew.

Good beer for a cool fall evening. Not sure it's worth the price or one I could drink often but definitely glad to try.

from notes on my last trip up north

orange tinted amber with a little bit of a haze to it and ample carbonation. A nice three finger head of white lace appeared on top and gradually faded down into just a film across the top. The aroma was very big, full of spices, lots of cinnamon and nutmeg were readily noticeable. The taste followed along the same line. A very spicy little ale with just the right amount of hotness to it. The cinnamon was particularly strong and had a great effect on the flavor. Very nice light body and ample carbonation made it go down very easily.
