We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

It is the first time I am having Rumpkin the Rum Barrel Aged Pumpkin Ale from Avery, ABV 16.9% (according to bottle). It is pretty strong and a bit boozy but it has an interesting flavor. Perhaps it is a tad too boozy for me, halfway like drinking sweet rum, but overall it is quite good and it comes together nicely. It is definitely easy drinking for that alcohol level.

Look: cloudy amber with a thin white head

Aroma: pumpkin, sweet potato, and Rum

Taste: It's sweet, pumpkin, sweet potato, and Rum, quite boozy.

Feel: medium to full body

Terrible beer. Too boozy crappy pumpkin beer taste. Wanted to dump it after a few sips.

This was a trade extra that came earlier this spring. I just now noticed the bottle date of 9-22-14. Damn. Almost 3 years old to the day.

L - teku pour. Thin ruby red translucent pour with light khaki head. Lots of sediment in this.

S - like rum, and a loaded swwet potato. Marshmallows and cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice. I'm getting the pumpkin but honestly it smells more like a yam to me.

T - wow that's hot. It tastes like a loaded sweet potato soaked in rum. Stupid sweet. Stupid hot. I like it though.

M - burns like everclear. It drinks so sweet yet finishes with a surprising dry grittiness.

O - I dig it. I generally laugh when people think high abv beers "tone down" in time. That's a big misnomer imo and this beer is every bit as hot as any fresh avery, dogfishhead, or bruery beer in the 15-20% range.

12oz bottle into a tulip. batch #5 bottled 9/9/15, plus however long it was aged in the rum barrels.

despite a careful pour, there are tons of floaties, some bordering on chunks. initially medium brown cloudy brown body, lots of carbonation running up the side of the tulip replenishing a small bubbly off white head, at least at first. over the course of the 90 minutes it took to get through this one. as it settled, the head disappeared, and the body took on a clear dark brandy coloring.

Aroma is a pleasing mix of rum and pumpkin spices.

ouch, this one burns a lot. one hot, hot, beer. But this seems initially more due to the spices. the alcohol hits later, numbing the tongue and creating a slow burn in the back of the mouth. However, there is also a pretty strong sweetness, to balance it out a little. And it rolls around the tongue beautifully.

Mouth is closer to full than medium, finish is hot.

overall, and i admit to being no big fan of pumpkin beers, this one seems to get it mostly right for my palate. other than the initial ugly look of course.

Big, boozy (rum!), sweet, with a nice blend of pumpkin pie spices and mellow squash flavor. Well-done and interesting beer. I had a 5 oz pour and 12 oz of this would probably be a bit much.

Sickly sweet. No balance whatsoever. Worst rum barrel beer I've ever had and the worst Avery beer I've ever had.

I know I've reviewed this before; I just haven't gotten around to typing up my written notes. Those are forthcoming, but in the interim here are brief impressions on a 2013 vintage bottle:

Bottled Sept 6 2013. 617 cases produced. Gold foil covers the pry-off cap. 12 fl oz format.

"Pumpkin ale"..."aged in fine fresh rum barrels." 18.53% ABV...sweet Jesus.

Served chilled into an Avery snifter and allowed to come to temperature over the course of consumption.

APPEARANCE: Still yields a hiss upon removal of the cork even after 4 years of aging. Unfortunately, the head fizzles out quickly (within 10 seconds flat), leaving no lacing. It was weak and thin anyway, but clearly that 18.53% is tough for a head to stand up to.

Boy colour is a vibrant red with plenty of plainly visible yeast particulate floating within. Translucent. Transparent when backlit.

I didn't expect a reddish hue in a pumpkin ale, but it's not unappealing by any stretch. A more robust head would be a definite improvement, though.

AROMA: Booze is the first thing I notice, along with warm rum and obvious spices...ginger, nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice.

Less prominent notes follow...canned cherry pie filling, molasses, caramel, brown sugar, pie crust, red hot cinnamon candy, leather, and, yes, pumpkin gourd...though the pumpkin is far less prominent than I expected, hardly dominating and indeed almost drowned out by the aggressive rum booze.

I'll never know why Avery insists on monstrous ABVs in their barrel aged beers, and this - like most in the series - is worse for being so hot. Suggests a sipper of a brew with downplayed pumpkin and played up spice.

Aromatic intensity is moderately high. I find no overt hoppy or yeasty notes.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Tingles from cinnamon spice ripple across the palate joined by unpleasant boozy heat and unwelcome rum...time has not been kind to this beer, nor has it mellowed out the obvious high alcohol and concomitant heat.

Ginger, nutmeg, and allspice make appearances alongside sweet molasses and heavy malt sweetness. The rum is harsh, and the barrel doesn't suit the taste well to any extent. I find no overt oak, coconut, or anything you'd actually want from rum barrels; all I get in terms of the rum barrel is depleted sugarcane and booze.

It's aptly carbonated, which is to say it's not very aggressively carbonated at all - and that's precisely what you'd want in a sipper like this.

Pumpkin gourd is buried if not barely present at all...why brew a pumpkin ale if you're not going to commit to the pumpkin gourd?

A bit leathery, a bit rough/coarse on the palate, a bit dry, dragging, and oh - did I mention this was hot? The mouthfeel is unpleasant (and, obviously, unrefreshing). Not oily, scratchy, or astringent, but it's definitely off and there are missed opportunities to accentuate the beer's flavours. Full-bodied and heavy on the palate, but it does stop short of being syrupy even if it does feel too viscous and a bit sticky.

No overt yeasty or hoppy notes.

This is an imbalanced loud beer that emphasizes big bold flavours over nuance, subtlety, and harmony of flavour. I guess it's suited to sell to American drinkers who want that in a barrel aged beer, but I'm not so keen on it.

OVERALL: The premise isn't great...rum and pumpkin in a beer? Sometimes, such combinations work surprisingly well...this is not one of those cases. I didn't find this to be as great as many American drinkers seem to when I tried it fresh, but I hoped it would mellow out with age; in actuality, it just gets worse. At a minimum, an effective pumpkin ale has to deliver in terms of deep vivid pumpkin flavours; this fails that test. Boozy rum drowns out any subtlety this might otherwise have had, and its ABV is high for high ABV's sake. I recall preferring Rumpkin to PumpKYn, but I have to concede aging it changes the pecking order. Enjoy this fresh, or not at all.

To be fair, I do get a hint of coconut as it comes to temperature, and as the alcohol sets in it becomes more enjoyable, bringing a nice warmth to the belly.

A 12oz. bottle dated Sept 22, 2014 that's been sitting around the fridge waiting to be opened. Poured in a twelve ounce Avery snifter for the review.

Look- Pours a transparent copper color yielding a small finger of creamy light tan foam that doesn't settle much. Some moderate lacing is left behind along with tiny carbonation bubbles and sizable floaties.

Smell- Spiced rum, pumpkin flesh and musty wood.

Taste- Sweet caramel and spice that borders a strange but satisfying cotton candy profile, followed by oak, rum and pumpkin flesh.

Feel- Thin, slick and smooth on the palate. The heat is still there but takes awhile to gather itself.

Overall- I've had this on tap at the brewery and while I liked it, I found it a little too hot and spicy fresh to drink a full 12 ounces. That's not the case with this 3 year old bottle. It's a more refined version that while easy drinking and smooth to start, quickly reels you in to slow down and savor the second half. A great cellar candidate if you have the patience!

Avery Rumpkin, 16.9% ABV. Pours chestnut brown and medium viscosity, with a half finger of white head. Nose is rum, pumpkin, and pumpkin spice - taste follows. It's a bit alcohol forward, and the sweetest beer I've ever had. Mouthfeel is good, and overall nearly excellent. My bad, but I was so sure Rumpkin was a stout that I never checked, and was surprised when I poured it.
