Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 16.90%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
We wondered what would happen if a monstrous pumpkin ale, plump full of spicy gourdiness, were aged in fine fresh rum barrels to add suggestions of delicate oak and candied molasses. Rumpkin is what happened! This first member of the Annual Barrel-Aged Series was brewed with roasted pumpkins from a local Boulder County farm, and spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger.

2016 vintage. Poured into a stemmed glass. Light head that dissipates quickly. Smells of warm molasses and pumpkin. Intoxicating. Strong but not overbearing taste that warms the pallete. While a year or two would do wonders to this, it's an amazing beer. If you're a pumpkin fan, is a must try.

An opaque brown brew with a thin layer of tan froth. Smells like a big slice of pumpkin pie with the spice and crust and all. Sweet with molasses, hot with rum and big with gourd, but damn if it doesn't just absolutely work. Notes of oak and black cherry are also noticed. Medium side of heavy in body and fairly smooth.

Always slightly apprehensive when approaching a beer this big, and not only because of the alcohol content, but Avery pulls it off like few others can.

Look has a grape juice hue. No head.

Good spice and pumpkin smell.

Tastes amazing. The rum goes great with the pumpkin. The booze is there but masked very well for 17%.

Feel is good. The sensation from the rum lingers

Great beer. Better than pumpKYn. The rum just compliments the spices so well.

I don't even know where to begin dissecting this big boozy beast. It almost has more in common with a port or liqueur than beer. And I say this as someone who is well acquainted with barrel aged brews.

The nose one this one is really spicy, with a lot of ginger. Tastes really sweet and bright up front, with notes of dark fruit, port and pumpkin spice. There's a genius convergence of rum-like sugar and spice, with your more typical pumpkin ale sugar and spice. Plenty of caramel holds things together, with vanilla in the background. Boozy, yes, but not in a raw ethanol sort of way. More like a really mellow 10-year rum booziness.

A little thinner in body than I expected, with no real head or lace to speak of. But there's a somewhat syrupy character that coats the palate and helps round out the feel. Nice oaky finish.

Pours the a copper brown with thin head, but there is an inordinate amount of yeast clumps floating in mine, which annoys me in anything put a few Belgian style beers. Aroma is fairly hot, and the rum note thins out some of the spicey aromas (nutmeg & cinnamon) giving them a stale characteristic. But it isn't bad. This one is very hot on the rum booziness as you'd anticipate from the ABV. The sugar / molasses flavors from the rum coupled with some of the pumpkin spice somehow creates a concotion not dissimilar to apple flavored robitussin. Very medicinal. I like it to a degree but a whole bottle is a slough. Mouthfeel is thick & coating, very molasses like.

This behemoth manages to embody Autumn holidays with every sip. Plenty of rum barrel-soaked notes of pumpkin spice and sweet molasses, nutmeg, cinnamon and a healthy hint of ginger, all in both scent and taste.
I almost overlooked this heavy-duty gem, thinking it was something I tried recently (I initially mistook it for Avery's PumpKYn).
This is better in the sense that it's so highly drinkable considering its high abv. The rum barrel serves the pumpkin notes well. Most of the woody notes appear in the nose and not in the taste, which is a fine balance between rich sweet malt/ molasses and rum barrel/ Fall spices.
I took half a growler once I realized this was new to try, as Avery doesn't steer one wrong in the "big beer" department. It would be great to sip through November, too.

Beer#666 that I've rated. 2015 edition. Poured into thin Unibroue snifter. A real MONSTER. Color of a pumpkin if I left it out for a while. Not much in the way of foam or lacing, but a lot of particulates floating around. Strong pumpkin smell and the barrel presence isn't overwhelming. Taste, however, totally different story. It is a big boozy bastard with a booze burn foremost with a healthy pumpkin flavor following. Glad I let it age a year, because it's a super powerful beer now, and I can only imagine how strong it would be fresh. I don't know how much rum I'm getting, but it's a great beer.

12 ounce bottle, Batch No. 5, bottled Sept 9, 2015. 18.0% ABV. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours a burnt orange color with about an inch light tan head that fizzled away quickly. Lacing is OK, and there are some floaties noticeable too. I like the aroma, the brew smells like rum, nutmeg, cinnamon, pumpkin, allspice and some ginger. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some brown sugar and graham crackers. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's coating with a moderate amount of carbonation. Drinks easy enough for being 18% ABV. It's still a sipper, but a pretty good one. This is definitely worth picking up! $12.99 a bottle.
