Poured from a 12oz. bottle into an Avery tulip.  Beer was a hazy amber color with a one-finger, off-white head.  Soft carbonation with some lacing around the glass.

Aroma was sour lemons, grapes, raspberries and some funky brett notes.  Very nice.
Taste was sour cherries, grapes, vanilla, grains and oak.  Not as complex as the aroma, but still quite delish. 
Another delicious treat from Avery's barrel aged series. The last couple of releases have been fantastic!

Poured from bottle, bottled February 11, 2011, to a tulip glass.

A - The beer pours a bit hazy amber color with a nice 1 finger slightly off-white head with decent retention and lacing. The foam slips to a silky film.

S - A complex aroma consisting of some fruity character: raspberries, cherry. A fair amount of malt sweetness as well as vanilla.

T - Very nice flavor. The beer starts with the malt character, cherry tart, and vanilla flavors. The sour nature of the yeast soon follow and blend nicely with the nice mild bitterness. The beer finishes crisp and dry. Very good. No way I could tell it was as strong as it is.

M - Suprisingly thick and smooth and yet crisp at the same time. Good carbonation.

O - I really enjoyed this beer. A lot of the sour beers are too much and perhaps the mild nature of this beer appealed to me for that reason. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks to OtisCampbell for this one. Poured from a 12oz. bottle into Lost Abbey stemware. Bottled 2/11/11.

Pour yields a 1.5 finger light pink cream colored head with low retention that dissipates into a thick ring around the glass. Beer is a semi-cloudy muddy peach. Not the most attractive color. Lacing is patchy and patterned with good cling though.

Nose is sufficiently funky. Sour red fruit along with some oak notes. Wet hay with a subtle wine-like characteristic. Not the most aromatic but clean and appetizing.

Opens soft cherries. Spices up quickly with some clove and a huge tartness that erupts in the middle. Vanilla and sour cherries and raspberry notes. A touch of woodiness. End is puckering with some Brett funk. Fruity. Finish is some wine-like tartness. Aftertaste is clean. Rather intense in a good way with a nice earthy backbone. Impressive.

Light to medium bodied with ample carbonation. Crisp and lively in the mouth and goes down abrasive and puckering. Finish is filmy with a clean aftertaste. Appropriate and rather amazing considering the ABV.

That this beer is 10.3% is pretty astounding. There's almost no booziness and the alcohol is all but undetectable. Not exactly smooth but very easily drinkable and crisp and refreshing. Definitely a standout in the series.

Served at SAVOR on tap into the SAVOR glass

A - A bricky reddish body with an offwhite head that yeilds decent lace.

S - Great yeasty character on the nose. There is some nice fruit notes in the nose as well - A little bit of cherry. I also pick up some oaky tones on the back end.

T & M & D - A good berry and cherry flavor in the beer. There is a great wine character to the beer as well with good oak notes and some great yeasty tones. The beer is very crisp with the perfect level of acidity. The mouthfeel is great as the beer is medium to light bodied with great carbination (all aspects that play off the crisp nature of the beer.)

O - I sat at this table at SAVOR and talked to the guy pouring and stayed there for a while - Why - Because I had 3 glasses of the stuff - So good! Get your hands on some.

A: poured into a tulip dihos pours a dark copper with a red hue quite a bit of head that dissipates pretty quick leaving nice lacing.

S: funk! smells of tartness, brett, cherry and a bit medicinal.

T: quite a bit of cherry on this one, first taste very tart with a long finish.

M this one has quite a bit of carbonation, nice amount of bubbles coming up throughout the entirety, finishes pretty dry.

O: overall this is a great beer for sour fans and even if you don't like sours you should be able to enjoy this beer thoroughly. the 10.74% is masked very well.

Sampled on-tap multiple times at Brewvival.

Pours a slightly hazy light amber color with a one-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of medium malts with large amounts of lightly tart red cherry and raspberry aromas. Also present are light hints of funk and larger amounts of vanilla from the oak.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though not as complex. Medium malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by hints of vanilla and larger tart cherry flavors. Midway through the sip some funkiness dries things out a bit, carrying through to a crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I didn't have any problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this was one of the more mild sours I've had from Avery. Easy-drinking but lacking the complexity and bite from their better attempts at the sour beer. Still, worth a shot if you see it around.

On tap for Churchill's Renaissance 2013 at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a hazy copper with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with some fruity and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with a sour fruity flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some nice sour flavors that make it easy to drink.

Pours hazy amber with a khaki, fizzy loose head that dissipates quickly. Noses of tart cherries. Starts very sour, lingers with fruity middle (cherry, raspberry?), finishes tart and dry. Carbonation maintains throughout. Crisp mouthfeel. Pungent and strong. One of the better sour ales I've tried.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into that trusty shaker glass--again. Poured a amber/brown color with no head to speak of. Tartness and funk on the nose; taste was great: sour cherries, malt, and wood with a little funk thrown in. Avery has done some nice things with their BA releases; looking forward to their next one.

Poured into my Avery's stemmed glass.

A: Darker ruby red until held up to light then a medium dark brownish red. Slight off white head that dissipated quickly leaving a thick ring.

S: A fruity, funky slightly sour nose.

T: Smooth sweet to tart sour with a slightly funky tomato linger (not in a bad way).

M: Good carbonation all the way through, good sharpness to it.

D: I couldn't see myself drinking more then one glass of this in one sitting.

Another fine limited release from Avery.

A - A hazy amber with a slightly red hue, 1 finger head disappeared quickly to a minimal crown 3.5
S - Fruity in the front, sweet malts amongst a general sourness, raspberries & banana 4.5
T - Wow tangy sour start, cherry/berry notes, slightly medicinal, a bit of an astringent finish, definitely a red wine tannin quality to it, a bitterness throughout the whole taste I'm unable to describe without more wild ales under my belt 4.0
M - Light to moderate mouth feel but so big in taste, I enjoyed the level of carbonation 4
O - A crisp flavorful drinking beer, enjoyable even to an amateur like me, I would have another one but not in the same sitting 4

Aroma is of cherries and raspberries. Some hints of Cabernet sauv from the barreling. Appearance is beautiful glowing golden amber that is somewhat translucent. Head is a tan white that laces the rim of the glass. Taste is somewhat tart and slightly vinegary sweet cherry/ Rasperry, The cab sauv taste just peeks it’s head in to say hello and then is gone just as quick. Palate is fizzy, sour and has a long delightful finish that holds the taste of wine and berries. Overall one of the best sours I have had. At 10% alc this is also one of the stronger sours I have had.

Wow, a really good Avery sour, would love to try this again... pours a watery red brown with a light off white head, but watery... the nose is mostly sour cherries, a little simple but nice... taste has more going on, a very nice sharp tart bite, cherries, oak a bit of wine texture... get this

Pours a light fizzy bubbly head that fades semi quickly, darker toasted auburn brown color but very clear

Nose tons of oude bruin like souring, bacteria lacto perhaps pedio but maybe not, Brett funk sourness, sweet brown malts and barleywine-ish level sweet candy malts, soured malts too, creamy lacto funk, mild toasted buttery oak, and a touch of vinous wine even.

Taste is quite sour, big acidity, malt vinegar, more sweet like candy malts and barleywine-esque maltiness, a bit of soured candy, again more bacteria sourness, lacto creamy sourness, and Brett funk as well, maybe more bacteria, mild buttery oak, and a touch of vinous wine but hard to get much, wish I had one fresh to compare. Finishes a bit flemmy but surprisingly not much, more acidity, and funk lingering.

Mouth is med bod, very acidic and only a little flemmy, touch of booze, decent carb

Overall not bad, an interesting oude bruin like sour with sweet malts on top of big souring, surprisingly not very flemmy, and touches of wine barrel which I wish was more and probably was when it was fresh.

Bottle courtesy of Eric (TurdFurgison) - a great birthday gift! Served in a ZBF 2011 tulip.

A - Pours with a finger-plus of creamy light tan foam that eventually settles to a solid cap. Superb retention, and large swathes of lacework. Body is an almost clear translucent dark orange-red. Streams of tiny bubbles are visible at the edges of the glass.

S - Large oak presence, vinous notes, musk, sweat, a bit of cheese, over-ripe berries, and lactic sourness are all present in varying degrees. Gets increasingly oaky and cabernet heavy as it warms, but it's worth the wait.

T - Taste is again heavy in oak and wine grapes, along with some tart berries. There's a bread and yeast malt character in the background, but this is dominated by acetic and vinous notes.

M - Creamy medium-full body, tannic and dry finish that is also lightly sticky on the lips. Medium, zesty carbonation. Some faint alcohol warmth, but the 10.74% is a bit of a surprise.

D - It was easy to drink 12oz, but I'd put this a notch behind Sui Generis and Quinquepartite. The intense oak, Cabernet, and acetobacter in the finish gets a bit fatiguing, and the high alcohol makes this more of a slow sipper than a refreshing sour ale. Definitely one to savor over a long period of time.

Another nice, well made sour beer from Avery. Not nearly on the same level as say Cascade or Lost Abbey, but getting there. Pours a nice orangish color with a silky tan head. Nice wine barrel presenc eover sweet malts and sour yeast. More funky than sour. Clean body drinks well.

12oz bottle into Duvel tulip. Thanks to BA morningthief for getting me this bottle (traded it for a KBS).

Appearance: Free pour yields a one and a half inch fizzy offwhite head that dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. Pours a slightly hazy ruby and leaves a few sweeping patches of lacing.

Smell: Strong lactic sourness. Mild fruit notes, cherry and strawberry. With warmth, the fruit opens up and gets stronger, but still not much else I can put my finger on. Faint oak. Decent brettanomyces tang.

Taste: Nice, deeper and darker flavors than in the smell. Creamy body comes as a welcome surprise, and works well with the mild lactic sourness, Cabernet Sauvignon, and vanilla oak flavors. Can immediately taste the 10.74% ABV--this is a hot beer, with alcohol heat lingering through the finish like hard liquor. More oak influence than wine, but the cab flavors come out stronger and deeper with warmth. More fruit emerges as well, with some melon and citrus flavors. Brettanomyces has very little influence on the flavor, though it comes out in the aftertaste occasionally.

This beer is packed with good flavor. Lots of complexity, and well-balanced. It's too hot for me, but perhaps that's the price paid to get all these beautiful flavors into the beer.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and very creamy. Well carbonated. Reasonably puckering. Excessively hot, but that hurts the flavor more than the feel (I enjoy a nice lingering alcohol heat now and then).

Overall: This is a very good beer, though perhaps it's too confused to be a great beer. It has bright, fruity flavors bolstered by well-implemented wild yeast and bacteria sourness, so it should be refreshing... but then there's this enormous alcohol heat burning up the refreshment, along with mildly smokey and dark fruity cab flavors and big oak influence, both of which suggest a deep, decadent treat more than Spring/Summer refreshment.

The flavors are balanced, in that they work well together, nothing jumps out and overpowers (though the heat threatens to), but they're don't necessarily compliment each other that much. If it were food, you could perhaps say the chef should have done a little editing. Still, it's a very well made beer that's packed with flavor. I'll enjoy finishing this bottle (already about 40 minutes into it) and would happily buy another.
