Draft at the tasting room.

Pours a clear, dark golden copper color with pale tangerine hues and a two finger frothy white head that has pretty good retention, slowly fading into a lasting cap.  Sporadic rings and streaks of lacing.  Visible carbonation bubbling up.

Slightly spicy aroma with faint floral hops and sweet malt.  Hints of toffee, caramel, biscuit and light fruit.  Apricot and hazelnut with brown sugar and cinnamon.

Medium bodied with a nice balance of zesty spice, earthy hops and sweet malt notes.  Hints of pepper, brown sugar and cinnamon up front followed by the caramel malt, rye, biscuit, toffee and hazelnut notes.  Sweet fruit notes toward the finish, mostly apricot and tangerine.  Dry finish.  Spice is a bit heavy for my liking.

i keep having this there thinking i might like it more since i heard several bartenders rave about it... dont know what thats about

appearance - murky copper brown. fizzy but not much head. lacing isnt leaving much.

smell - caramel and toffee notes, some sugar, yeast, smelling decent...

taste - grainy, a bit too much like cereal for me. some yeast thrown in beside doesnt help much. the sugar isnt as noticeable. a not so nice blend.

mouthfeel - medium body, a bit cloying, carbonation is not on, a bit on the low side especially from tap.

A: Light brown. A little golden when held to the light. Moderate head that quickly dissipated and didn't leave much lacing. Eh.

S: Smooth, subtle malt aroma. A little grain in there with some soft toffee and caramel scent. I get a touch of alcohol and spicyness.

T: Sweet toffee, cereal grain, and spicy rye right away. Pretty smooth for the 9% its listed at. Not getting much hop flavor if any, but theres certainly a little alcohol heat on the finish. Enjoyable, rather dry.

M: Somewhat high carbonation and lighter body. Seems acceptable for this style. Mouthfeel reminded me somewhat of Rogue's Dead Guy.

D: I really liked this beer for what it is. Never had a spring helles that blew me off my feet, but this one ranked up there with some of the best. The 30% rye shines pretty well since there is barely any hops and it goes down pretty smooth for a nine-percenter. Give it a try if you like strong lagers and happen to be in the Avery neighborhood.

We tried this one on tap today at Fresh Craft in Downtown Denver. Poured a clear brown color with a small amber head. Slightly spicy on the nose, with aromas of caramel, rye and earth. On the palate, this one is medium bodied and smooth, with flavors of rye, caramel and a little spice.

First had: on tap at their brewpub

This might have been a taproom-only selection...I don't remember and my notes don't specify. Anyway.

This beer poured a slightly cloudy copper-brown, with a decent white head that left some spotty lacing. Bready aroma, not too strong, slightly spiced, slightly fruity, with a leafy hop sensation. Taste of: sweet caramel malts, spicy rye, leafy and earthy hops, nutty with touches of brown sugar, and an essence of orange zest and apricot. Medium-bodied and quite drinkable.

Had on-tap at Avery. Poured a hazy copper color with a moderate off-white head that allowed for some nice lacing. Aroma was that of yeast, mild spices, undertones of fruits and light hops. Smelled complex and well-balanced. Tasted of earthy, yeasty, bready, nutty, sweet and slightly spicy notes. A tiny bit of extra sweetness was in there but I could not quite pin the taste.

Medium-bodied with light carbonation. Very drinkable...I really enjoyed this one.
