Opened in August of 2015. The years of aging has this drinking awesome. The sharp fruit notes have mellowed to rounded out mellow tones. Almost creamy smooth. Worth the wait.

A - Creamy brown sugar head on top of a dark brown beer.

S - Moderately sour aroma with a great interplay of nutty malt and peaches. There is a corn husk smell you might get from bourbon, and slight oak, too.

T - Loads of cherries and red wine tannins. The toasty, nutty malt really shines, even though the beer is punishingly sour... in a good way, of course!

M - Medium body and covers the mouth with tannin sweetness. My only complaint is that the beer has a much too sweet aftertaste.

O - Wonderful malt forward sour with a nice touch of tannin character. Absolutely worth seeking out!

Ok, first off has anyone noticed all the awesome sours in the background of this beers picture? Holy shit.

12 oz bottle poured into my Duvel tulip. Bottled Aug 17 2011.

A- Pours a dark brown color with slight ruby hues around the edges. Creamy khaki color head just barely covers the top of the beer. Very fine bubbles, its a nice change of pace from sours that dont have much of a head.

S- A ruthless blast of funk on the nose. Sweet green apples, tart fruits, the oak starts to shine through, grapes, wine, acidic lemon. God this smells great, im hoping the taste follows the nose here, my mouth is watering.

T- Delicious, mouth puckering sourness. Green apples and white wine, followed by relatively strong oak notes that creates kindof a clashing buttery flavor on the back end but its just barely noticeable. A little sweetness on the palate, acidic lemons, more wine, Brett funkiness, lingering oak. Amazing.

M- Mouthfeel is thin, carbonation is good, not as dry as i would like it, but im not very concerned about it.

O- This was an amazing beer. I get so stoked on sours that i tend to give high ratings, but this one is definitely deserving of the badge of honor im giving it. Drink this one slowly folks, it sneaks up on you. Bravo Avery, bravo.

Sampled November 2011
A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a two finger thick, creamed amber tinged head that leaves a touch of lacing on the sides of the glass. The beer is a near black color that shows some bright, clear brown around the edges when held up to the light. As I pour this beer I smell the fruity red zinfandel barrel notes as well as a sort of apple like smell. Toasted oak notes meld with a toasted malt character and this is tied together by a solid tart smelling note that can suggest at cherries at times, though really smells more lactic influenced than anything. There is a hint of cheesy funkiness to this beer, that is perhaps brought out by some buttery oak notes coupled with the funky fermentation character; whatever the source, I like that this is not a totally “clean” sour beer, the touch of funk boosts the complexity of the aroma without overwhelming the other notes. The malt, is mostly present as a toasted, brown bread crust type thing, but there seems to be a hint of roast to this beer (I could be imagining it, though I will not when I taste it) and a nice chewy, raw, whole-grain medley type aroma. In the end the fermentation character plays the lead role, followed by supporting oak character that is closely followed by the chewy malt aromatics.

A prickly, light carbonation, couples with a comprehensive sourness that grips the palate from beginning, to lingeringly sour finish. The acidity is predominantly lactic in character and is quite pronounced. A touch or red wine, sort of berry, definite structure oak, and wine-grape tartness are accentuated by the lactic sourness. This beer is sour enough to make me pucker just a bit. I really like how the finish is quite dry and quite sour, yet still manages to see a tart-berry like fruitiness to it. There is a suggestion of chewiness to the front and middle of this beer that is hinted at from a touch of whole grain, toasted malt character; this is not quite as prominent as it was in the nose. There is also a touch of roasted malt character towards the finish that tells me my nose didn’t lie, it provides a burnt tartness in the finish (though this is overwhelmed by the lactic character) and a roasted / blackened grain note that plays a supporting role in this beer. A soft buttery note seems to be contributed more from the oak character than from any funkiness, though I think the latter plays a role here as well. The oak seems to contribute a texture and heft to this beer (though the malt likely contributes too) that helps keep this beer almost chewy. There is a supporting funkiness to this beer that comes out as it warms up; it contributes notes of phenolic, sort of musty, not really medicinal, slightly mushroom-like, with perhaps just a touch of muskiness and odorous funk.

Definitely a quite enjoyable beer and experience. I never know quite what to expect when I open one of these Avery Barrel Aged-Series beers, but this is certainly one that is quite nice. I really like how the Zinfandel Barrel character comes through in this beer, and the ample sourness from the bright lactic character plays really well with the other notes in this beer too. This was even more than I was expecting

12oz bottle picked up at the release party. A surprising dark cola brown pour with a one inch foamy head. Great carbonation straight out. Produced a nose of dark, sweet fruits and cherries. Warned it would be sour. I found it more tart than typical for a wild ale but pleasingly balanced and delicious. The time spent in vinfandel barrels adds a sweetness to knock down the mouthpuckering sharpness that slaps you up front, leaving a refreshing finish overall. Nice job by the gang at Avery..

My man Kiddwhiz hooked this up, thanks man! Poured from bottle to Duvel tulip. Bottle dated 8/17/2011. The beer pours a deep rich black color with clack edges, only towards the end of the glass did I see a deep mahogany hue when the beer was thin, otherwise very dark. A nice 2 finger light tan head with good retention and lacing. The aroma is prevalent the second you crack the bottle and builds with intensity as the beer warms. Tart and sour upfront with hints of fruit: apples and a hint of cherry, a distinct oaky zinfandel tone that works well with the fruit. A hint of funk on the back end as well. Smells great. The flavor starts very much the same with an immediate sour tartness on the tongue. The apple and cherry fruit flavors are more pronounced and work well with the sourness. The oak zinfandel is less prevalent but provides a gentle tone that lasts throughout the beer. Finishes dry and sour with a lingering sour apple flavor. A thin caramel malt flavor and mild bitterness accompanies the more dominant theme of the beer. Medium bodied and well carbonated. Overall, this beer was a treat and a half. I wish I could find more to enjoy, extremely recommended.

A: Very interesting pour. Deep brown with hints of ruby on the edges. An extremely creamy khaki colored head rises up and lasts forever. Just a ton of lacing down the side of the glass. The head is very stubborn, it won't go away!

S: Very tart, a ton of dark fruits and cherries/raspberries. Some booze is coming through as well as a nice maltiness.

T: Wow the taste is all about the booze and the tartness. A lot of dark fruits create the base for this, and is complimented by a slight funkiness, and some notes from the barrel. Not getting a lot of, but surely some, Zinfandel.

MF: Medium to heavy body for an American Wild Ale, carbonated very well, and the notes of alcohol are not overbearing.

O: I very much enjoy the taste, so I think it's pretty darn drinkable. Love the mix of tartness, booze, and dark fruits. Becoming a huge fan of the Avery sour series.

A: This poured a cloudy dark mahogany with almost no head.
S: It smelled like red wine and oak and sour yeast, with some vinegar and dark chocolate and pepper.
T: It tasted super sour and tart, with oak and vinegar and some red wine and citrus and dark chocolate, and a bit of pepper and blue cheese. It had a clean and lasting sour aftertaste.
M: It was thin and very bubbly, like champagne.
D: This was a great sour with tons of zinfandel character. It had a refined tart scent and taste with fitting body. The alcohol was pretty well hidden too, but this must be sipped to enjoy and contemplate. Could probably age a long time. Recommended.

Brewed with Imported specialty Belgian malted barley, malted wheat, Saccharomyces yeast, Brettanomyces yeast, Lactobacillus & Pediococcus.” For those wondering Immitis is Latin for cruel, harsh, rough, sour or rude!"

Certainly a complicated brew that goes in a lot of different directions for ultimate complexity and sharply savory character.

Immitis pours with a modestly carbonated lap into the glass. The medium-dark brown ale carries a mild haze while developing a creamy lightly tanned head that regenerates with a gentle swirl of the glass; even at the last sip. Light on lace, the acidity seems to impeed this notable character.

Sharp lactic tartness, fruity esters, and sheer acidity shapes the beer with aromas of black cherries, limes, crabapples, balsamic, red wines, and apple cider vinegar. A firm backbone of malt provides a slight toast and black peppercorn character. The aroma of corn whisky mash has an intriguing tannic, grainy, and spicy phenolic character that provides balance against the sour notes. Classy pedio-character provides a complex horsey, dusty, and must scent that reminds me of sandalwood, mossy, and degredating woods.

Cleaner and creamier in flavor, the cherries, under-rippened berries, lime, red grapes, and vinegar sourness shows a very sharp and defined pang to the tongue. Aided by that balance of toast, walnuts, pepper, and woody malt flavors, softer elements of almond and malted milk seems to soften the blow of sharp vinegar flavor. Calm hop bitterness weaves into the sour matrix and contributes an exacerbated flavor of both. Lightly salty, a flavor of brine or sea water accompanies the balsamic and red wine vinous flavor in finish.

Acidic, sharp, and astringent from the onset, the obvious pang of sourness attacks the sides of the tongue, inside of cheeks, and teeth in aggressivley low pH fashion. With a lightly malty/fatty mid palate that's aided with embedded creamy carbonation, the early texture is fruity tart, yet finishes with a fleeting adicidity, tannic, and surprisingly mild alcohol warmth.

Aggressive throughout, the balance of sour fruits, wood aging, and toast are enough to make my tongue sweat (didn't know that could happen). Yet the beer is very appealing to many who like Belgian Flanders Red Ales. A very rewarding and challenging sour option.

appearance - dark mahogany. pretty active but not much of a head or lacing.

smell - tart cherries, wine (coming from this is also alcohol)

taste - sour apple/pear, then comes the wine, back to some sour, then a nice tannin/oak feel at the end.

mouthfeel - dry, very refreshing and somewhat lingers with some puckering. good big body for the style and medium to low carbonation

12oz into a Duvel tulip.

Dark mahogany with crimson highlights, and a beige head that quickly dissipates into a ring around the edges.

Opens with fruity vinous notes similar to red currants and pear. Some tannin and a touch of grape with an acidic quality to it.

On the tongue, we again have those nice fruity red currants with a very sharp, acidic bite. Pears and grapes move in and smooth things out, with a touch of oak and a hint at vanilla.

Medium bodied with low carbonation, some drying and a bit sticky.

Good wine like fruityness with some barrel presence and a biting sour. If you like the Avery sours, this one is worth a try too.

Thanks very much to Ratman for sharing a bit of this one with me yesterday. Poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting tan head and great lacing. Aroma of sour citrus, grapes, oak, barnyard and light caramel. On the palate, this one was light bodied and crisp with a dry tart finish. Flavors of grapes, sour citrus, barnyard funk and light caramel with a crisp dry tart lingering funky vinous finish.

12 oz bottle courtesy of a Colorado trader of recent times. Apologies, I'm not able to look up my history at the moment but I appreciate you!

Mahogany pour with reddish highlights along the edges. Big initial head plummets to a bubbly outer ring. Spotted lacing follows suit.

Lactic and vinegar notes on the nose along with some mulling spices. Light cherry and oak. Zinfandel is understated.

Cherry, spice, and funk on the front end. Transitions to big vinegar and acedic notes. Sharp pucker. End is all barrel: Zinfandel and tannins. Oak is drying.

Carbonation is quite high but not overly distracting.

Overall, I like a puckering sour and I enjoy big acidity. I much prefer an abusive sourness to an understated sourness and this beer plays to this preference. Vinegar notes are appreciated, cherry works, and the wine barrel finished well. Wouldn't mind having this again.

Bottled 8/17/11. Enjoyed 1/7/12.

Dark brown body with some ruby tones on the edges. Only vespers of a head.

Strong zinfandel aromas, vinous and fruity, with strong acetic tones. Tart cherries and oak. I swear when I took my first sniff, I got some chocolate.

Subtle on the palate at first, with flavors of oak and thin malts. Slowly builds into a red wine, tannic bite, with sour cherry tartness. Drinks like a bottle of wine that's been open for two weeks, but I a good way. Tons of acetic acid on the finish, with balsamic vinegar flavors. Dry and kind of low on carbonation.

Very nice sour, tart and complex. The zin barrels really shine through, which is great since I love zin. Complex and rewarding.

Poured from a bottle into a Colossus snifter.

Appearance: Pours a very dark mahogany color with just a hint of off white head that disappears completely.

Smell: Extremely tart and somewhat funky. I'm picking up a lot of wine and some dark fruit.

Taste: Really tart. The wine barrels have added some really nice tart wine and wood to the flavor. The tart, vinegary sourness mixes with some acidity and it is quite intense on the tongue. I'm enjoying this.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with very mild carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I enjoyed this beer a lot. I is intense, but I'm liking the sourness. I probably won't have another, but I would given the chance.

Dark brown in color with an off-white head. A touch of vinegar on the nose along with lots of black cherry, red wine, and oak. Just a little bit of grassy and earthy funk. Pretty solid Flanders Red sort of aroma. The flavor is nicely tart with some balsamic vinegar notes along with a strong fruity quality. Nice cherry, grape, and raisin with red wine flavor, tannic oak, and a mild grass.

Bottle courtesy of scray24, shared at the December iteration of the Santa Cruz tasting series. Pours dark brown with a tiny tan head. Solid sourness coupled with a really nice roast/cocoa character. Usually the sour + roasty thing doesn’t appeal to me but this is really really good. Very sour flavor with cocoa, full round red wine, and even some salted peanuts. Don’t ask me. It works.

Pours a clear cola brown color with small off white soapy bubbles. The aroma has sour brown character with red wine, tannins, cherry, musty grapes, and wood. The flavor has a nice tart character, cherry, vinous, wood, with some sweetness as well. Solid.

Dark brown with glowing auburn and ruby edges and a thin khaki colored head; this leaves the glass nearly clean, with just a few splotches of lace down the glass.

Stinging sourness, a bit of wood, and a strong vanilla component are the major makings of this beer's aroma, and it's my favorite aspect of this beer. There's also a bit of comforting barnyard/hay aroma which I think is a nice complement.

This is a delicious, and unique, sour red. There's a strong, biting sourness throughout, earthy and bittersweet vanilla, cherries, a bit of oak flavor, and a hint of tangy yeast.

Thin to medium mouthfeel, though a bit oily.

I really enjoyed this beer a lot--an interesting take on the Flanders red style.

Appearance – Pours a quite dark, chocolate color into a tulip. Slight head is achieved with a vigorous pour, and the head dissipates almost instantly.

Smell – Barnyard funk, must, sour/tart cherries and granny smith apples. Tannin, oak, and alcohol.

Taste – Similar to the aroma. The first sip makes my mouth pucker a ton. Heavy tannin, cherries, oak, red wine vinegar, alcohol and acidic qualities. My throat gets quite a bit of warming.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, lower carbonation, slightly creamy, finishes dry and burning.

Overall – Wow. A very intense sour. Nothing like Meretrix. Heavy acidity and burning is not the most favorable experiences, but the sour was interesting nonetheless. Have one more I will sit on for a few years to see what happens.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. This is the second beer in the series that I found the be adequately sour for a sour beer. The others, aside from Meterix, were quite boring and lacked any sort of substantial sourness. Nice depth and complexity. Well balanced, clean crisp body. Drinks well. Looks like Avery is starting to head in the right direction with these beers. And considering beers like voltron and platypus, it has taken way too long.

12oz bottle split two ways (thank God because it's intense). Dark cola color, short fizz if a head and decent lacing. Smells like sour fruit, alcohol and barrel. Tastes like sour fruit, wood, hint of chocolate which I was not expecting and some alcohol. This was very intensely sour and the flavors seemed combative but I still enjoyed it.

This beer pours a dark reddish brown color. There is a small layer of foam resting on top. The foam slowly falls, leaving behind some lace on the glass. The nose is very sour and boozy. It is funky and acidic. There is also some hop aroma, along with a bit of dark fruit and wine. The taste pretty much follows the nose. It is mouth puckering sour, and there is some tart wine and woody flavors. I am also getting quite a bit of acidity, mostly on the back end. The finish leaves lingering sour acidic, and wine flavors on the palate. This has a medium body and good carbonation. It goes down pretty easy and has a big mouth puckering sourness to it. It is also tart, acidic, and dryness to it. This has good drinkability. I wouldn't mind a few glasses of it over an evening. Overall, I think it is a nice sour beer, and I would drink it again. I definitely think it is worth a try if you come across it.

Bottle pour for Best Damn Night Of The Barrels held at The Beer Company in San Diego, CA.

Bottled 8/17/11.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart with malt, grain, and wine aromas. Taste is much the same with a super sour fruity wine flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and quite sour.

A: Pours a deep red mahogany with a fizzy off-white head. Poor to fair retention. Good colour.

S: Red currants, blackberries, notes of acetic acid, balsamic vinegar.

T: Full notes of black and red currant, the Zin barrel is clearly there. Some vinegar, a lot like a Flanders Red in some ways.

M: Medium-high acidity, not cruel as the bottle states. Lightly tannic with some wood notes. Medium/full-bodied.

O: A very good sour beer from Avery. Fans of Flanders Reds and/or Zin will enjoy this. Big wine barrel character.
