Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey “Bourbon.” He built his distillery in Bourbon County Kentucky in 1790 — 203 years before we began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacob’s wash, we’ve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest Bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! It’s in our blood!

Once again, Avery does not disappoint. This brewery is not only consistent with their products but they are also innovators in the beer world. Pulled it out of the basement closet. A thick jet black pour. The smell was chocolate ,bourbon , vanilla, some roasted/burnt malts and sugar. Amazing how the alcohol is so smooth and hardly noticed in regards to the "alcohol burn". A well balanced product to say the least. It is almost "magic" in regards to how the flavors change as the beer warms. Job well done Avery. This is why I keep coming back !

This is up to the Avery standard with a great dark appearance with a small tan head that desipates quickly. Very pleasant bourbon aroma. It had a strong alcohol taste when I first tried it but after a year of aging, the alcohol taste has diminished considerably without losing and of the bourbon taste.

Bottled Feb. 13 2015 and enjoy feb 19, 2017. Poured from the bottle into a snifter, in 3 installments. Pours jet black, fairly thick, with a thin brown head that falls quickly. Exactly what you expect from 16.9%. Smell is huge with notes of caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, bourbon, and a touch booze. Awesome nose! Taste is spot on! Huge, but not overwhelming flavors of marshmallows, caramel, burnt malt, sugar, and a huge kick of vanilla and bourbon flavor. VERY full in body with just a slight alcohol burn in the throat, but the age covers the boozieness fairly well. Overall, absolutely amazing beer that is almost more of an experience. This is my third time having it, all were 2015 bottles, one after 6 months, 1year, and now 2, and the age just keeps all those flavors together so beautifully, and honestly, with age, not too harsh at all for 16.9%. Perfect, for me.

L-Black poor. Very small head but a bit of carbonation.

S-Maple, vanilla, cocoa nibs and magic. Yes, magic

T-Superb. I've never had a beer so high in abv taste so delicious and how did they hide the alcohol?! You really have to look for it while you're drinking. I'm blown away by this.

F-Silky smooth on the pallette and goes down quick.

O-This beer is DANGEROUS. I can't believe how balanced it is. It must be pure witchcraft. I'll buy as many as I can next time it's out. A little pricey at $15 a 12oz bottle but it's worth it in the end. I've one more bottle and will forget about it for awhile.

Out of the bottle into a snifter. Pulled from the fridge and sat out about 30 minutes prior to pouring.

Appearance- motor-oil black, 1/2 finger head after vigorous pour, very little lacing, just a few tracks down the glass.

Smell- mostly dark chocolate and alcohol, a little coffee

Taste- starts with dark chocolate, then the alcohol comes in which yields slightly to more dark chocolate and coffee briefly. Finishes with some dark chocolate bitterness and a fairly intense alcohol burn.

Feel- full and creamy, this thing coats the mouth and sticks around for a while.

Overall- This was a very pleasant surprise and definitely worth the cost. A very nice sipper to enjoy over an hour or so.

2014 variety. Pours jet black. Very boozy and vanilla on the nose. Taste is sweeter than I expected, with bourbon on the finish. Still, I thought it was pretty smooth for nearly 15% ABV.
