Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 14.90%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey “Bourbon.” He built his distillery in Bourbon County Kentucky in 1790 — 203 years before we began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacob’s wash, we’ve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest Bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! It’s in our blood!

Very dark, smells like bourbon (surprise!), tastes like bourbon (very hot, though also very sweet), but it isn't as viscous as I was hoping. Wanted to like it more than I did: had a hard time drinking the whole thing, and, in general, Uncle Jacob's Bourbon Liqueur isn't good enough to warrant the $13.99 price tag.

This beer pours dark black with an average head. The aroma leads with dark chocolate, followed by licorice, baking cocoa, cappuccino, and brown sugar. The flavor is again dominated by dark chocolate, with brown sugar, caramel, roast fruit, fig, and cappuccino. The motuhfeel is rich and full with low carbonation. Overall this is an absolutely fantastic beer - so incredibly balanced, it just begs you to drink more of its high ABV goodness.

Poured into a tulip glass from the bottle. Black with small tan head and mild carbonation. The alcohol coats the glass much like a straight liquor. There are fusel alcohols up front and a bit of bitterness that hits you in the back end. The body is there throughout the glass. You get bourbon upfront as well. Definitely a sipper from start to finish. Raisins come to mind have way through this one. True to Avery it's a big gravity beer that will get smiling fast.

This is the best barrel aged stout I have ever tasted.

First it pours black with very little head. The smell is super complex, we are talking wood, roast, minimal booze and other scents I can not properly describe but are outstanding. The taste is out of this world. Wonderfully blended, no heat or alchohal blast, crazy flavors going around the mouth and throat. Feels thicker than it looks.

Overall the best so far for me. Nothing is like it so far.

On draft at the brewery. This one could be dangerous! It may be the highest ABV I've had in a beer. Honestly it seems a bit excessive but the flavor is all there. It's a shame that bottles weren't available for sale because I'd really like to have another without having had several other samples first.

Uncle Jacob's pours a black codor with a small tan head. Big boozy aroma with hints of oak. Taste is huge oak flavors hints of bourbon, lots of creamy oats and black licorice. Great body creamy feel. Overall big creamy silky smooth boozy beer, perfectly crafted. Amazing.

My expectations going into this were mixed. I've heard great things about the beer, but many of the other Avery offerings I've tried have been underwhelming.
12oz bottle poured into an OEC tasting glass. Pours, as anticipated, a thick, viscous black with minimal head. The nose is light on the bourbon, faintly boozy, and rife with notes of chocolate and coffee. On the palate, unexpectedly subdued bourbon let's an outstanding base stout come through. The interplay of chocolate, bourbon, and cocoa (that lattermost note owing to a good reigning in of the sweetness of the beer) works tremendously. The mouthfeel is spot on.
The beer lived up to the hype. Not one I'd spend $14 for a bottle of again any time soon, but an outstanding beer nonetheless.

Dark brown color with a film of brown foam. Aroma is boozy with intense whiskey notes and caramel malt. Taste starts sweet and sugary, follows with some bitterness, mostly roasty. Medium plus body, low carbonation, quite smooth on the palate but the alcohol is quite present.
