Notes / Commercial Description:
Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey “Bourbon.” He built his distillery in Bourbon County Kentucky in 1790 — 203 years before we began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacob’s wash, we’ve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest Bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! It’s in our blood!

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Cigar City Brewing El Catador teku glass.

A: Very dark brown, and more or less opaque. Has a thin tan head and low levels of visible carbonation.

S: Bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, and oak. Then toasted caramel, toffee, and very mild char with notes of tobacco. Really nice, and the aroma certainly doesn't suggest the monster ABV listed on the label.

T: Chocolate, bourbon, roasted malts. Vanilla and oak tannins. Sticky toffee and Heath bar, with bigger tobacco and dried leather aspects than suggested by the nose. A sweet sticky finish with Skol and toasted vanilla wafer cookies. The finish is nearly balanced between the sweetness and roasted bitterness - I'm assuming there’s some hops as well, but they’re not prominent.

M: A nice thick body without a ton of residual sugars - not quite Cigar City or Cycle’s style, but close. Low carbonation sensation. The alcohol is obvious and warming – but incredibly well-hidden for the 16.9% on the bottle. I probably would have pegged it at no more than 75% of that.

O: F*ck…this is good. Complex flavors, and they absolutely nailed the barrel and bourbon presence that’s good to me (i.e., balanced with the beer). This is seriously dangerous, and hides the alcohol very well. I could easily (try to) drink this all night.

Pours midnight black. Brown tan head subsides to a light coating that floats on top of the beer. Nose is vibrant - plums, prunes, figs, dark high cacao chocolate, fudge. Taste is massive thick chocolate, notes of stewed fruits. Mouthfeel is rich, thick and syrupy. The finish continues the same notes and then resolves into just the slightest bittermess, like a good puece of chocolate. This is a warmer for a cool evening, to be sipped slownd savored. ABV is massive at 14.9%. Stunning.
