Stopped by the pub for dinner during the week. We were sat in the small balcony seating overlooking the first floor of the restaurant and out beyond the wall of glass onto Lake Michigan. The takeaway:
The pub is attractive and the view is beautiful.
The food was better than good. We had the mushroom pizza and Korean BBQ wings, and would return just for the food.
The beer was decent and serviceable. We each tried two at the pub, and the drink menu was a nice mix of styles.
Pricing was exceptionally fair for Petoskey.

We always stop at Beards when we’re in Petoskey. Their beers improve every time we go. Definitely worth a stop.

This their new location which just got built. It served fine food to pair with beer samples. Parking in downtown Petoskey seem a little changeling. Waitress was friendly and the view out of the many windows of Lake Michigan is great. They have some beers to go.

Beards has moved to 215 E Lake Street. Parking still limited. Food was good. Had pulled pork and wife had plain hamburger. Buns they were served on were really good. Place was crowded and a bit loud on a Saturday (summer) afternoon. Beer flights available - up to six 5 ounce glasses. Six packs available for take-out. I would eat there again.

A craft beer stop in downtown Petoskey? I had never heard of it before but as luck would have it I ended up staying a block away for a few days over the summer so a visit was in order. The place itself is tucked away at the end of a dark hallway… it felt like walking into a Midwestern pool hall or something, minus the smoke and pool. But there’s tables with board games and beer magazines as a trade off.
Great logo, as I am known to rock a hearty beard myself from time to time, but it seems like the branding—a beard-shaped taster tray, bearded growlers and howlers, etc—took precedence over the beer itself. I hate to say it but this was a disappointment. Less than stellar beer across the board and an ambiance which has so much underutilized potential. Here’s hoping they get things together. I’d love to visit again sometime on another ‘round-the-lake’ trip and rave about this unassuming place I came across…

Sept, 2015 UPDATE: After a second visit to this brewery, I found the beers to be much improved over the review below, so I'm revising the quality part of the scoring to reflect the new scores for the beers that I tried on this visit.
****************************************************************************
This brewery just opened in 2012. It is located along the main downtown street in Petoskey, but it has only a door front that opens to a hallway that leads to the pub that is behind the retail stores that flank the front door. So it's easy to miss this place unless you're looking closely. The pub area is a fairly small space, but it's kind of cozy. You can see the brewing system in an adjacent room.
My wife and I stopped in several weeks ago and had a sampler of 4 of their 7 beers that were available - a stout, a brown, a rye and a porter. The other three were not styles that I like (a wheat ale, an IPA that was said to have the flavor of bananas (?), and a pomegranate-flavored pale ale) so we passed on them. (I like IPAs, but bananas? I wasn't feeling adventurous.)
The beers that we tried need some tweaking to get them into the style taste range that would suit me. (They were kind of weak-flavored too.) I'll give them a grade rating of a C- to a D+. The price for less than average beer was $4 for a 12 oz pour, and $5.50 for 20 oz. For the pomegranate pale (which they considered a Specialty beer) the prices were $4.75 and $6.25 for the 12/20 oz glasses.
I'll probably go back again when I'm in the area to see if there is any improvement because I want to give a new brewery the benefit of the doubt and some time to get their beers dialed in to the taste that I think is correct for the style. Who knows, maybe the three beers that we didn't try could have been right-on.
