deep semi murky brown fluffy off white head that dies rather quickly. smells nutty rich and earthy smells sweet musty and woody.

tastes a lot like the smell. a bit medicinal and booze, very musty semi vinious but not like a good wine. drinkable and good but I'm not sure if it's up to trappist standards

As the "little brother" of the Trappist brewing, Stift Engelszell steps into the Strong Dark Ale arena with a bold and majestic ale that carries a regal sense of complexity and with superb drinkability.

Gregorius pours with a deep dark russet brown hue and the expected yeasty rust haze. The beer calmly builds a creamy but short off-white head. Though the beer is restrained with its foamy lacing, it does celebrates brandy-type legging that coats the glass with malt oils with a gentle swirl of the chalice.

Creamy candied aromas and taste begin with an elegant sweetness that's reminescent of grape, hard candy, and powdered sugar. Combined with the robust tastes of grilled dark fruit, blackcurrant, cabernet, mild chocolate, light coffee grind, cola nuts and cashews- the taste is varying but savory and sweet. Added complexities arise with raisin, plumb and prune as the beer warms and the taste buds invite more delicate character. A balance of vinous woods and black pepper balance the sweetness and fruit and close the beer with a dry sweetness that's every bit as wine-like as ale.

Its firm and creamy body is rich, savory and succulent with its initial sip. But finishing warm, its evident that the malts have receded, the bitterness of wood oils rises, and the alcohols pronounce.

And with the same type of satisfaction of Koningshoeven La Trappe Quad, Gregorius has fit the Trappist Strong Dark Ale taste, complexity, and drinakability to a tee.

I bought this as part of a gift pack that included Benno and the glass.

Bottled in February 2014.

It pours a hazy, no cloudy rusty brown with a huge head of foam that is great with the lacing.

The smell has quite a bit of bitterness to it yet there's a honey sweetness going on as well. Perhaps some molasses but more interestingly, I can smell some funky notes.

The honey is the first thing I notice in the taste; quite sweet on my palate. The bitterness I noted in the smell is very citrus like in the taste and the the curious funk smell...I get that too. A very complicated beer here, I reckon.

Full bodied, medium carbonation.

This is most definitely a "weird" brew and I reckon a very polarizing one. Put me in the camp that likes it.

A FaceBook alert had me out on the trail for this draft. Deep brown with a sweet head made this an attactive tulip. This is a complex, big beer but tart enough to desire a second. Although Belgian style through and through, the Austrian have provided enough of a different take to stand out. Thanks, Paul, for getting this one on.

Bottle poured into a snifter

A: Pours a cloudy, hazy mahogany red/brown color, no head retention, lots of yeast in the bottle it was fizzing pretty good, no lacing.

A: Belgian yeast, banana, slight aroma of spice and clove, on the sweet side as the honey comes through pretty strong, dark fruits like raisins and plums, not getting any alcohol on the nose.

T: Follows the nose, Belgian yeast, banana, honey, dark fruits, very smooth and easy to drink, alcohol does come through pretty strong.

M: Medium bodied with very little carbonation because it was gushing when I opened it.

O: This beer while tasty but was all over the place on the rating scale, not a great look or mouthfeel but a solid aroma and a solid taste. I think the gushing effected the look and mouthfeel.

The body is a muddled, deep rusty brown. Any more haze and it would be opaque. A finger's worth of creamy, dense, light tan head gradually recedes. No lace is left behind.

A sweet streak of alcohol really elevates and intensifies the nose. Rich, toasty nuttiness and caramel lies at its core. A vinous quality with a bit of tart cherry envelopes its sweetness. A bit of soy sauce comes out the more I smell it. Warm banana bread peaks through as well. True to the style, there's no shortage of complexity here.

Sticky raisins and dates come in full and hardy. Sweet alcohol shoots across the palate. Beneath is a rich, bready, toasty essence that gives you plenty to chew on. Ethanol cleans the palate and warms the chest.

Full bodied with a bottle-conditioned foaminess that I love. The alcohol lingers but it's not overdone. Its CO2 level is on par for the style.

I'm happy I'm able to cross another Trappist brewery off the list. I found this to be a very traditional take on the style, and me loving the style, I enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Pours a dark reddish-reddish brown color with a moderate sized fizzy brown head. Recedes quicker than any head I've seen. Leaves an interesting thin island of a head in the center. Zero lacing on the sides. Definitely some interesting characteristics for a beer this ABV.

Complex aroma of caramel malts, dark fruits, sugar, and candied fruit. A good deal of alcohol.

Very sweet taste of sweet candied caramel, sugar, and ripe fruits. Cherry and raisin are strong, with a dash of fig as well. The sugary nature provides a nice bite of bitterness, and just a hint of sourness. The cherry strengthens as it warms, and it actually starts to take on an element of a Sour with the combination of cherry, bitterness, and sourness. Apple also joins the scene as it warms. Some very nice things going on here, without being quite as harsh as some Belgian Strong beers that you might see.

Remarkably drinkable at 10.5%. Medium bodied, with fairly high carbonation. A bit sticky on the finish. Manages a way to be refreshing despite it's alcoholic nature, a feat not often achieved.

Overall, a very pleasant surprise. Shocked to see this rated so low after trying it. Although this is a bit on the tame side for the style, it still has a very unique and tasty flavor profile. Strongly recommended for any fans of the style.

Look: Dare I say a bit swampish? It's a medium, murky brown, with spotty tan fizz for a head. Not the most attractive of beers, but the low head retention is somewhat acceptable due to the high alcohol content, and the cloudiness is not atypical for the style.

Smell: Dark fruit scents are both sweet and sharp. Blackberries and fermented grapes give off a Petit Syrah character. Meanwhile, cocoa, figs, and plums add a musky softness. More malt complexity could bring some needed balance and roundness to this fruit-forward bouquet.

Taste: The juicy layers of dark fruit are given bit of a kick by a tangy, marmalade taste, and additional balance is brought on by some honey sweetness. Malt characteristics remain lacking, although the light cocoa on the nose is still present in the taste. Light bitterness settles in straight away. It is a strong and interesting concoction, but in terms of complexity, it is outdone by plenty other examples of the style.

Mouthfeel: The intense dryness is immediately apparent, adding a sort of vaporous sensation to the beginning of each sip. While quite syrupy, some weight is removed by a high level of carbonation. A tingling on the tongue builds until the taste is affected--it's as if one's taste buds have been obliterated by pop rocks.

Overall: A somewhat fascinating specimen, and yet, the flavor and aroma beg for a bit more complexity. The harsh mouthfeel is interesting, but perhaps not I the best of ways, as it begins to distract and detract from the flavor.

pours dark amber brown, opaque and well carbonated, small tan head that settles out quickly.

Plum and prune is there but also more straight up candy sugar from a sweet shop.

Very strong black liqourice flavour, sweet dark dried fruits get pushed out a bit but are there as well. Candied syrup, brown sugar. Very sweet, sugary, maple syrup like flavours. Lots of heat and alcohol is present. Lighter body than its compatriots.

Nice beer for sure but in the canon of trappists its not on the same level as the classics.

After trying almost all the Belgian Trappist ales (sans Westveleteren) I was ecstatic to find this in the beer aisle. Poured from a 11.2 oz. bottle into a Belgian tulip.

Appearance: Dark mahogany and purple. Thin lacing on the top.

Smell: Strawberry preserves, some plum. Very unique, not what I was expecting.

Taste: Starts with a concoction of plum and honey. Booziness overpowers these flavors at the finish. Unlike most other Trappist ales with a high abv content, the booze is not concealed in this one. The finish adds to the uniqueness of this Austrian Trappist ale. I rather like it.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly medium-bodied. Not as chewy as would have thought.

Overall: I will be picking this up again. If the Benno is as good as the Gregorious, Engelszell shall be named among my top favorite Trappist breweries.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Chocolate brown with decent tan head.

Smell: Loads of dark fruit, slightly sickly, and some Belgian spiciness.

Taste: Very sweet with plum, raisin, dates and cherry. Some spice notes, with a touch of honey.

Feel: Low carbonation with a sticky body. Finish has some drier mead characteristics but not quite enough.

Overall: Okay Belgian Strong Ale. Simply too sweet and ripe. I prefer their Benno beer by a wide margin, which is some kind of Saison/BPA/Braggot concoction.

33cl bottle. Dark brown pour with a tall tan head. Smells tart and vinous, like grapes, sour milk, vinegar, yeast and spices. The taste adds overripe bananas, red wine, dried fruit (mostly prunes), dark fruit jam, a bit of chocolate, burnt caramel (mostly the bitter part than the sweetness), rosemary and a warm alcohol finish. Quite a complex and enjoyable brew.

Dark brown to nearly black in color. An inch of light beige head rests on top. I smell dark malt and honey. I taste earthy dark malt and honey but it just seems a bit too simplistic. The mouth is fairly carbonated and tastes of alcohol. There's a moderate dark malt aftertaste.

L: A hazy hazy chestnut pour supports a 1” cream colored foam collar with a very fine bead. S: Banana, honey, fruit, hint of cardamom or anise aromas. T: Complex spice, some darker malt, hints of chocolate, some roast, honey and a suggestion of fruit cake in the long lingering aftertastes. Moderately bitter hops provide some balance. F: A soft palate with high medium body, medium high carbonation O: Very nicely done and a pleasure to drink.

Mahogany and dark brown with a creamy brown head of very small bubbles. Leaves sheets of stick down the glass.

Roasted malt, dark fruits, distinctive Belgian yeast, and some ash and char round out the aroma.

The flavor is very reminiscent of a Belgian dubbel, with dark fruits and distinctive, earthy yeast making up the bulk of the flavor, along with a coffee/char/ash tray flavor lingering in the background.

Medium bodied with creamy carbonation.

Good, but nothing paradigm shifting.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of June 2014, so it's a bit out of date. Acquired ages ago from Trembling Madness in York and stashed away. I'm hoping age will have improved it. The ingredient list mentions honey....

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned - this contains a vast amount of slimy sediment that looks like snot (perhaps 10-15%). Rather unappetising to put it mildly, and not what I want to see in an expensive brew. A dark brown hue that appears virtually black in the glass. Holding it to the light reveals plenty of floating chunks that I take to be yeast. Yields a small head of beige foam that disappears rapidly. Quite disgusting.

S: Aroma of sweet, fruity malt with hints of prunes, raisins, fruitcake, brown sugar, mild molasses, marzipan, subtle yeast esters and a touch of stewed leaves. A warming whiff of booze in the background.

T: Tastes of sweet, fruity malt that borders on cloying, with a subtle bitter finish. Notes of prunes, dried fruit, fruitcake, brown sugar, mild molasses, faint marzipan, stewed leaves, harsh cardboard and fruity yeast esters. A touch of solventy alcohol in the background. Quite sweet, followed by a restrained, herbal bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with effervescent carbonation and good body. A slightly harsh quality on the palate. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of sweet, fruity malt, stewed leaves and acrid cardboard.

O: Disappointing; particularly the gunk in the bottle. Unpleasant looks, while the aroma and flavour are rich and sweet with harsh undertones. Body is OK. It resembles a quad but hasn't aged as well as I might have wished. Fruity but plagued by off-notes and generally unsatisfying. Perhaps this is just a bad bottle - the potential is certainly there. I may re-review if I get the chance. That said - caveat emptor.
