From the 3 month out of date bottle, it pours a hazy brown with a lusty head, soon reducing to a ring and continent. Malt and some prune in the nose. Prune forward (to me), it is enjoyably malt and fruity. Yum! Dangerously easy to drink! Mouthfeel is good, filling the mouth nicely.

Garnet-tinged nut brown with lumpy ecru head. 4
Walnut oil, dates, and aged rum barrels. 4
Chocolate-covered cherries, earth, banana chips, raisins, butter toffee, hint of ginger, and barky end. 3.75
Not quite medium, fizzy, some cling. 3.75

A Trappist at nearly 10% that’s short-dated - figure that one out. At any rate, this is about 2 years past “expiry,” which should make it mellow. So a bit disappointing that it’s so jumpy - fizzes like a dubbel more than a quad. And while it ticks the right boxes, also lacking the depth of flavour that Kaiser Blue or other champions of the style would bring. Nice, but doesn’t deserve to be called Trappist. 4

A 330ml bottle with a best before date of 4th December 2016, poured into a Chimay goblet glass.

Appearance: It poured a cloudy dark brown colour with a one finger tanned head that dissipated quickly but settled to a thin creamy layer with sparse lacing.

Aroma: Roasty chocolate, caramel followed by strong dark fruit, plum, prunes, raisin, figs and fruit cake.

Taste: Sweet dark fruit plum, prunes, raisin and fig. Syrupy toffee, caramel and molasses. Also a hint of banana, mocha and alcohol. Lightly sour here and there.

Mouthfeel: Creamy, full bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: It’s ok, but mainly too sweet and boozy for my liking.

Look: One finger white head, super dark brown body.

Smell: Dark fruits, honey, rye bread, molasses, this smells kind of like mead.

Taste: Same as above.

Feel: High carbonation, medium body, dry upfront but then a honeyed sweetness takes over. Slightest suggestion of tanginess. Really warming for the abv, no bite.

Pours clear brown until the sludge rolls into the glass from the bottom quarter of the bottle. Small dense head that dissipates with a few spots of lace. Nose is simple sweet malt syrup and brown bread. Taste is also very simple, but pleasant, with malt syrup, some residual sweetness, and a balanced but soft bitterness. Overall, it is pretty likeable, but not a lot going on for a quad.

A murky brown and ring of off white head, little to no lace. Smell is brown sugar with plum and raisin, dark breads round out the nose. Taste start out with and oddly metallic bitterness, dark fruit and sweet sugars, nowhere near as good as the nose, alcohol in the aftertaste. Medium high carbonation, full bodied. Not particularly good for the style, something seem off to me not infected though.

Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into Westie tasting chalice.

L-Ruby brown with quickly dissipating head.

S-Dates, bready yeast, brown bread, heavy malts and treacle, alcohol

T-Dried fruits and molasses, roasty coffee

Not as refined as some of the other Belgian Quads/BSDA's, but a nice warming sipper.
