Pours a dark, reddish brown, with a thickness like good juice. The foam is decent, but quickly fades to nothing. The aroma is dominated by malt, but also very fruity notes. The taste is also dominated by a heavy play between malts and fruit, like blackberries. A note of alcohol is there, but very subtle. It just adds to the rich, full body. Hell of a good beer, but so heavy I'll save the other three for special occasions. Bottle ordered directly from Stift Engelszell.

2015 bottling
Appearance: Pours with a bountiful ecru head capping the mahogany colored liquid; copious lacing
Smell: Roasted tones with burnt brown sugar and dark fruit - date and fig
Taste: Burnt brown sugar and dark fruit forward, with the date and fig tones joined by molasses, through the middle; bitter and herbal tones emerge in the finish
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet
Overall: Clearly not up there with the Trappist big boys in the style

L:
-pours a cloudy mahogany brown with a small to medium,frothy,sand-coloured head
-Yeast flakes visible at the bottom of the glass
S:
-plums,raisins,strawberries,balsamic vinegar,cherries
T:
-astringent,cherries,plums,raisins,chocolate,figs with a grassy bitterniss
-high bitterniss for the style
F:
-medium carbonation
-medium to full body
-boozy
O:
Not as Yeast-heavy as the "True" Belgians.Dark Fruit esters are more prominent in this.
It almost goes into Flanders Red territory with it's Balsamic vinegar note.
A really good and interesting Trappist.

Look: Deep, rich brown with a creamy, lingering head.
Nose: Figs and other dark fruits. Prunes. The figs are jammy. Some chocolate.
Taste: Chewy like molasses - a monstrously "big" beer. Somewhat bloody, metallic finish that takes away from the incredible beginning. Somewhat syrupy. Full-bodied and full of contemplative prayer. ;)
Overall: Quite delicious and worthwhile! The nose is more complex than the taste on this beer.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of dark fruits, malts, molasses. Taste is dark fruits, alcohol, bready malts, molasses, boozy and sweet at the finish. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer worthy trying.

From the 3 month out of date bottle, it pours a hazy brown with a lusty head, soon reducing to a ring and continent. Malt and some prune in the nose. Prune forward (to me), it is enjoyably malt and fruity. Yum! Dangerously easy to drink! Mouthfeel is good, filling the mouth nicely.

Garnet-tinged nut brown with lumpy ecru head. 4
Walnut oil, dates, and aged rum barrels. 4
Chocolate-covered cherries, earth, banana chips, raisins, butter toffee, hint of ginger, and barky end. 3.75
Not quite medium, fizzy, some cling. 3.75
A Trappist at nearly 10% that’s short-dated - figure that one out. At any rate, this is about 2 years past “expiry,” which should make it mellow. So a bit disappointing that it’s so jumpy - fizzes like a dubbel more than a quad. And while it ticks the right boxes, also lacking the depth of flavour that Kaiser Blue or other champions of the style would bring. Nice, but doesn’t deserve to be called Trappist. 4
