This beer pours clear bright orange with a thick foamy head and leaves behind moderate lacing on the glass.

The nose is tropical and malty, slight buttery popcorn. Lots of sweet tropical fruit notes, pineapple.

The taste, immediate burst of heavy tropical reminiscence, again slight notes of buttery popcorn. Pineapple and malt flavors are most prominent.
The aftertaste carries notes of balanced alcohol/sweet tropical flavors. Retro-olfactory is a nice grain/malt combo.

The mouthfeel is in my opinion slightly undercarbonated. However, it is smooth and surprisingly drinkable when considering the 95 IBU and 9.5% ABV characteristic. The carbonation level may pair perfect with the flavors and IBUs but without differences one may never know.

Overall this is a great beer! I do feel as though the carbonation level may leave a little to be desired. The flavors make up for anything this beer lacks, and that alone makes this beer very good and recommendable. Try it!

This IIPA is up there with the best. Total hop burst with every sip, though completely different flavors than SOS or Heady Topper. Perhaps more tones of melon, than of citrus or pine. Being 9.5%, you run the risk of heavy alcohol tones, however, this beer has zero alcohol flavor or phenol alcohol tones. Just a straight up fruity IPA that's big on unique flavor. Hopefully this doesn't start selling out at the local beer stores like the other famous IIPAs, but I can see why it would. A great beer.

Poured from a 16oz can (canned on 09/25/15) into a 17oz Brussels tulip glass

A - Like the can, it pours a hazy, orange with a solid one-finger of white head. Classic DIPA looking brew (4.5)

S - Despite other reviews, I find this to be quite aromatic...Mango, Pine, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Peach, Melon and Apricot are all represented. Equal parts fleshy fruit and pine is executed in Big Cranky. The 9.5% is completely hidden. (4.75)

T - Those aforementioned sweet and juicy fruits along with a resinous pine are complemented by a firm malt backbone that never gets too intrusive. Like the arome, absolutely no alcohol in the taste. (4.5)
M - For 9.5%, it sports a medium (minus) and creamy carbonation. The hop oils definitely coat the tongue, but the underlying bitterness never becomes astringent. (4.5)

O - To buck the trend and all the haters, this is a fantastic beer. For me, this is reminiscent of Space Juice (Long Trail). To those who need a better example, Big Cranky is an amalgamation of Enjoy By IPA (Stone) and Sucks (Lagunitas). For ~$11 4Pack (16oz), this is another winner for East Coast DIPAs. (4.75)

A malty, coffee, sweet finish makes me consider this excellent dipa a dessert beer.

Wonderful brew!

Incredibly fruity hopilicous smell. One of the high fruitiest IPA's I can recall having.

It drinks like a sweet nectar. Very syrupy. Not bitter with all the sweetness. fruity hop aroma comes through in the taste.

Excellent value, fresh this is a tier 1 DIPA.

This was another of the many CANs that returned with me from my latest New England visit to help further The CANQuest (tm). I CANtinue to marvel at how many craft CANs are now available & also at the beautiful graphics on so many of them.

From the CAN: "Agressively Laid-Back Beer"; "A bold West Coast Style Double IPA, this is the crankiest of our IPAs. Seven different hops contribute complex and juicy hop character. Its dry finish allows the hops to stand out. At 9.5% ALC/VOL and 95 IBUs, while remarkably cranky, this beer is extremely drinkable."

I began as I always do, with the Crack!, but the idea of an inverted Glug from a 16-fl. oz. CAN was verboten. Even my gentle Glug got me two-plus fingers of dense, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with very good retention. Color was Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, leading to a visit from The Gelt Gang of Midas, Croesus and Mammon. They sure do love their gold! I loved the fresh tropical fruitiness of the nose on this beer. It reminded me of my time as a west coast and Caribbean sailor, when fresh fruit was the norm and included mango, papaya and guava as well as pineapple and tangerine. My mouth was watering in CANticipation. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but close. I liked the way that the brewers may have intuited that hops with only tropical flavors might come off as too sweet, so it was balanced with a grapefruit citrusiness. While I was CANtemplating this possibility, some really nice, sticky lacing began to line the interior of my glass. Finish was semi-dry, believe it or don't! The sweetness of the tropical fruit flavors could not be overcome by the bitterness of the grapefruit. Phew! Jeez-O, man, if it were not for the ABV, I could go on a steady diet of this stuff. I would not mind trying the other Crankys, since they also seem to be CANned. Well done, sirs!

Woah, I've been seriously underwhelmed by all of Stony Creeks offerings so far, but this beer is the real deal. Strong tropical fruit aroma. It's a heavy/full bodied beer but somehow very balanced at the same time. Not sure how best to describe it but the prior reviewer's comment of "big in a good way" (that's what she said) is spot on. It's heavy, it's almost 10% abv, but I always want another one. Definitely on par with many of the other top DIPAs out there. Nice work Stony Creek, keep it up.
